    Hello, in this video, I wanted to show you how to make a transformerless adjustable power supply. The biggest feature of this circuit is that it uses a transistor to perform the adjustment process and has an AC input and an AC output. This project is made for educational purposes. Please note that there is high voltage on the lines, and do not touch them under any circumstances. Also, if you do not have sufficient knowledge and experience, just watch and do not attempt. The biggest advantage of this project is that it has an AC input and output, as well as using very few components However, please note that the project is dangerous and requires good insulation and cooling for continuous use. Also, the person who makes and uses it is responsible for any problems that may arise.

    It is creative, but has some problems:
    The chosen transistor breakdown voltage (Vceo) goes just to 250 Vdc max. And at 220VAC RMS the peak voltage is up to 308Vdc peak.
    The Gain/HFE of that same transistor is very low (about 50). For that 70W lamp under 220VAC it needs 320 mA for full brightness. So, current at base Ib= 320/50 = 6 mA. But power dissipation of that 1KΩ and potentiometer of 1MΩ (at 50%) would be 40mW (for R=1K) and 10~20W for the Pot, so the potentiometer may fry or burn 🔥 very easily.
    Probably using a Darlington stage to drive the transistor would help.
    As I said, an interesting concept, being surprised that it was not burning, but to make it safe, there still a lot of work to do.

    Great idea 🙂 unfortunatly in europe lightbulbs are rare. Project will be usefull to decoration bulbs - the nice looking filament. However I rather use triacs to regulate power.

      Triacs are noisy and for many applications this is preferred. LED's work fine with this.

    Looks like spikes are present in the supply thats why needed that large heat sink because it is not the correct way to operate a load best you can do to put a triac and diac no need that rectifier also

    Circuit works well for dimming LED bulbs. I changed RP1 to 100k to give a greater range of control

      With 240V mains voltage, a 100K potentiometer will burn up in flames. The potentiometer in this circuit is connected in parallel to the full rectified mains voltage, that is arround 166V for 120V mains, and 334V for 240V mains. 334V over a 100K resistor dissipates 1,11Watt, where a normal carbon potentiometer only is rated for 1/4Watt.

    yep, the load can be on ac or dc side.
    but not efficient, the 70W are simply shared between lamp and mosfet. less light but same power consumption.
    when will see a linear switching power supply...

    Much of the energy are wasted as heat on the transistor.
    If all you need is to dim an incandescent bulb, the best way is to use TRIAC.

    A great simple circuit, but does the heatsink need to be that big? Plus I wouldn't like to accidently touch any of the bare connects and get a zap from it.

      It does... It's going to dissipate a lot of power. Not a very efficient way of building a light dimmer.

      No creo que aumente la tension de salida ya que el puente es solamente para rectificar, entran 120 AC, salen 120 DC si no hay condensador de por medio, me imagino que en Turquia es a 240 la red domestica...Hagalo tal cual el circuito y luego mida con el multmetro

    Would have never though to create a Variac by variably shorting a bridge rectifier. Why don't we see this more often rather than the variable transformer or carbon pile type of Variac?

    Batter to use triac. I'm not so keen to destroy a good transistor. And it is to expensive to build this, then building a triac circuit.

      На симисторе лучше сделай,во много раз надежней и меньше греется .Схем симисторных регулятора полно.

    Bueno, lo que está haciendo es disminuir la corriente, y por consecuencia dependiendo de la carga, el voltaje cae, pero no es que regula como tal el voltaje.

    But of what use is this? A transformer would be far smaller and more efficient, and it would generate a lot less heat than that big heat sink.

    farklı yani bu transistör yerine başka ne kullanabiliriz. fiyatına baktım 200 tl den aşağı fiyat yok. bu fiyata değmez bence

      Любой высоковольтный мошный,например кт838 со строчной развертки советских телевизоров.Но вообще это хрень,намного лучше,проще и надежней регулятор на симисторе,схем полно.
