I got the Coco 2 today, extremely grateful for this video. I'm completely overwhelmed but excited!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the newbs. :)
This is amazing. Half an hour of top notch experimental music education with one of the most mystical instruments of our time. I couldn't be more happy.
I'm going to comment here and there as the video progresses:
The first demonstration - It's wonderful how organically you make the changes between quite disporate musical elements in the beginning. It has a weirdly dancable rhythym, kinda reminds me of Nurse with Wounds.
The second demonstration with the toy piano - I haven't made this connection this strongly before, but the way you treat piano especially brings mind the edge of pond waves. Small and soft, but quite fast and deep. It's such a beautiful rhythym to have within yourself. The way the sample warps in the end part is really reminicent of glitch, but it has a way more organic feel to it. I have no idea, but it also reminds me of the Peter Greenaway short movie A Walk Through H.
The third demonstration with the OP-1 - Incredibly touching once again. The soaring leads on this one are magical. There is something so down to earth about your sound, it never reaches out of a nature metaphor, it's really nice, warm and welcoming. It feels like your in tune with some lush, dreamlike place and you channel it through you. Every voice in the mix always sounds like an abstraction of something real, it's never synthetic. Like I've previously said, aural impressionism to the highest degree.
The voice bassline - This really blew my mind away. I've got no words.
Thank you for the step by step feedback, it gives me perspective.
The OP1 strings are played by four violins, two violas, two Celli and a bass. They are taken from an orchestra piece I wrote. Recorded them to tape and it remains a magical sound to me, something I consider a signature.

It is so generous of you to be sharing all these techniques. Without wanting to get too political, it also strikes me that now in this time of coronavirus, it is exactly this kind of sharing and generosity that needs to come to the fore. Danke Hainbach. These Ciat-Lonbarde instruments are powerful, watching you unlock their sounds is really helpful and a learning experience for us beginners. Peter seems like he might be sparse with documentation, maybe to encourage experimentation IDK.
The op-1 experiment was beautiful., particularly the noise waves against the cocoquantus samples.

not general techniques, but more like rundowns of patches you did.

Hey Hainbach, thanks so much for this. It helped me get started with my Coco a few months ago, as this gear doesn't exactly come with much documentation! It works beautifully with the Tetrax touch sensitivity and stereo presence. It's amazing how I can be noodling around and then suddenly go through a kind of portal where I'm totally 'in the moment' making something awesome that can never be repeated (Tip: always record any jams cos you never know when it's going to take off!). It takes a bit of practice to harness how much noise/hiss is picked up by the loopers and when I actually take recordings further I often use wav file restoration techniques to lose some of the clicks and pops that are difficult to avoid when patching.
Thanks for doing this. I've never quite understood the dip switches on the Coco and this prodded me in the right direction. Top notch video. Would watch again.

There's something about that combination of the OP-1 and Cocoquantus.
Complementing each other perfectly, resulting in something greater than the sum of the parts.

Like many others I always wondered about the coco. To me I always thought it would be a massive waste of money but I see they could be a infinite source of crazy sound design
It truly is.
Another very fine demo that really dissects the Cocoquantus to its bone. The way the looper degrades the sinal, becoming quieter and more lo fi to the end, is really fascinating - I wonder if you can achieve something similar via a MN Morphogene (bought the module recently and still a bit lost with the ins and outs - tough little machine)? This is really great, especially for working with cassettes. The organic quality of the media really stands outs with this.
Thank you! I think the Morphagene is a bit to hifi, you would need to pair it with a bit crusher or maybe the in if the Piston Honda and slowly fade it before it hits that.

thanks for yourr generosity in creating this. My Coco arrived today, and it's really nice holding someone elses hand, because, honestly, I had no idea what nodes were inputs/outputs at first! Can I ask about how you're wiring the Op-1 up from a stereo mini jack to two mono inputs? I couldn't make it out in the video visually. are you using a splitter cable? Or does going into the left normal to the right too? I'm still trying to understand how the inputs are internally routed to each 'looper'. thanks
Solved this myself when I found the visual map of the controls, and now get that there are two stereo inputs! I was using eurorack mono patch cables and a splitter so didn’t figure that out!

Hello Hainbach, Thank you so much for this video. It's definitely the most informative tutorial I've yet found about the Cocoquantus 2. I wonder how you equalize the output signal. I'm trying to figure out how to get a cleaner signal (like yours) without losing too much character.
In this video, there was no eq, all gain staging to minimize the noise. If I eq, it's generally with broad highshelf on the A&H mixwizard. Sometimes tape takes off some harshness.
I'd like to hear some more about the "🎧💫👍Alesis wedge"
Hainbach, the knob with the A above it on each looper, is it "null" at 12 o clock and then -CCW/CW+ or is it Full CCW = "null" and then fully CW = Max Modulation in terms of modulation of the speed?? ty

Hi ! i'm really into the cocoquantus for years and i don't have it yet. But i'm really hesitate between a cocoquantus and a little eurorack system with two morphagenes one maths and one wooglebug. I think add to this a cooper fx generation loss to add lofi to this. Do you think this system can mimic the cocoquantus ? i like the coco but i know me and it's to noisy for , to much hiss. I like hiss (i record on cassettes ) but i prefer to add it if i want thanks : )

Hey Hainbach, partially thanks to your music and videos I have a Coco on the way! I was wondering if you have any details/links for the input and output cables you're using? Finding it tricky to find something suitable that won't put undue stress on the jacks.
Not sure what you mean with undue stress. Best Banana are Pomona and else I use any stereo minijack. Angled are of course best, since they minimize the setup size.
@@Hainbach I'm just wanting to avoid hanging something like a minijack to 1/4'' adapter and 1/4'' cable off the jack. And of course the setup size is important too! An angled stereo minijack to L/R 1/4'' TS would be perfect but I cannot find one :(
great video as always. may i ask what type of cable are you using to input the op1 into coco and is it going into the left & right inputs of the coco at the same time?? i was just confused because it seemed like you were inputting the Sidrax at the same time. thank you
Cocoquantus has dual Stereo minijack ins.
@@Hainbach yes but around the 15 minute mark when the op1 got involved it looked like you were recording it into both sides, right?

Gooseneck. I have since switched to a cheap thomann brand gooseneck and it works even better, because normal mics are too heavy

hainbach can you explain why your connecting the sidrax output/ground(can't tell which it is) to the coco's ground?
Because I use the Voltage Memory from Meng Qi with the Sidrax, so I made a row of ground. If I don't its brrrrzrzrzrzrz
Sorry for the total newb question but; when you touch the wooden blocks on the lower half, what causes them to generate different pitches? Does the wood act as a capacitive touch switch?

Do you have any patch cable type recommendation for a Cocoquantus? I know it's for banana plugs by default, but I've understood it's also possible to order one with eurorack style jacks. What are the pros and cons of each? I've read that banana plugs and jacks are considered more durable (or rather, less friction causing less mechanical stress), and stackable versions are almost the norm in the banana world, while in the eurorack world stackable cables are expensive. Anything else you can think of? I'm kind of tempted to go for banana plugs, because then it would force me to use the Coco as a standalone instrument, at least patching-wise. I feel the huge space of possibilities offered by even a modest modular system can be as crippling to inspiration as modern DAWs can be for some of us. On the other hand, it would probably be nice to be able to share clocks with other gear.
In any case, thank you already for this video, it has served many times as a guide and inspiration on how to approach modular patches in general!
I never heard of a eurorack Coco. I would never buy one, banana is superior in every way, except for normalized functions, of which there none on the Coco.
HAINBACH I was asking based on some notes around a year old, but now I also can't find where I got the idea from. Probably misunderstood something back then, or my notes now... Anyway, thanks for pointing that out. Banana jacks it will be :)
