You can also ratchet with the stick. In steam I change stick to be a directional pad and have it so that when it hits the outer ring it activates a layer without gyro and deactivates when let go (I mean you can do this with joystick or joystick mouse, but I like to have it be solely a ratchet button only. I will also add that I use add set action layer on start press and remove action set on release press). I use it whenever I do play a game with a game with a normal controller. I tend to stick with the steam deck because I find the trackpad to be really useful as a secondary camera input and a way to select weapons, and having 4 back buttons is a life saver.

Hi gentleman, can you explain that? It seems like a really good idea, i want to try it out

I think they set the right analog stick as a "directional pad", then every direction is set to a "gyro off" layer. That way they can disable gyro by pushing the analog stick in any direction.
They also add that you can also do that while using "joystick" or "joystick mouse". That way, gyro won't be active while using the analog stick.

      @@FlickStickVids I'll try that, thanks!

@@hamiltonics In steam input joysticks (and trackpads) have an outer ring binding. It activates an action when a certain threshold is reached with joystick displacement. This is the easiest way use that feature to gyro ratchet.
      1. Create an action set and have it copy your default control layout and have the action set either have gyro on or off.
(best to do this after having everything else you wanted mapped)
      2. Click on the outer ring command and go over to the action sets tab. Select change action set and select your gyro on/off set. Turn off display name when changed and beep when change to avoid being annoyed.
      3. Click on the gear on the right of the outer ring command and click on start press. This should open a sub-menu and go down and select start press.
      4. While still in the layout edit, switch over to your action set. Do the same thing as step 2 but instead of selecting the action set, select default.
      5. Do the same as step 3, but instead of selecting start press, select release press. After doing that you should be finished.
You can use an action layer if you want. If you don't want any camera movement from the right joystick, you can select directional pad and just map the outer ring. You can also change the activation threshold by clicking the gear on the right of right joystick behavior and going down to the outer ring section.

great video! a lot better editing in this one and lots of great advice. I have had issues with vertical aiming and resetting the gyro but I will try some of the advice in this and last video. thanks!

I’m just hoping a dualsense controller comes out with dual gyroscopes because micro drift/noise is rough

I know this is a year late but I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT TO TURN OFF MOTION SMOOTHING ON MY PC. I've been playing games using DS4 for the kbm controls and I'm pretty sure that the flick stick was getting messed up by motion smoothing (since DS4 literally just makes your mouse flick)

Any particular tips to make my hands steadier? After a while using motion controls (especially in games where it's always on), I find myself missing shots solely because my hand trembles or gets tired after a while. Is there some particular way to hold the controller to minimize trembling and tiredness of the hand?

I have a previous video about this, but I also recommend using a pillow to rest your hands. th-cam.com/users/shorts3LP_-HyRw38?feature=share

You could try resting your forearms on your knees while leaning in, I find that this helps me a lot in FPS, and I don’t think enough ppl also realize that strengthening your forearms and wrist (ex. working out) actually improves your aim and steadiness aswell

There's a slider setting for precision aim in steam input for this exactly

Rest it on a mouse pad for starters I suppose. I play on my knees since I'm only learning and playing single player shooter campaigns like splinter cell and doom 3.
If I was being sweaty in ow or cs, I'd play on a mouse pad at my desk to see what sitting position and height works best for me till I can use it anywhere.
It's alot easier to get comfortable on this than a mouse and keyboard since there's less variables to adjust, but remembering how your arms sit and it's allowed angles of motion in the sitting positions is key. Your distance from the screen might affect you as well as they do for low sensitivity mouse aim

Tmj!
