I adopted my FMD in 2010 in SF. Black coat, spotted tongue, curved tail, erect ears, slender toned body, and a soft gentle mouth when taking food from my hand. She was 1 yr old when I adopted her. I wasn't her first owner but for 13 wonderful years she found her forever home with me. She passed away this past December, and again, she will forever be with me .

I have a 70pd 1-1/2 yr. old female Taiwan Dog .. flew from Taiwan to US August 2021 - was rescued from an abuser at 4mos, then in foster care for 4mos. before coming to me at 8mos. She has a sexy body ... likes to smell everything in detail like she's studying it, definitely a watch dog, covers all windows and doors and hears everything. Uses the bathroom in the same designated area everyday, on walks only pees no poop. On walks she's nervous, but I can tell she just needs socialization. Finally in training and we've been walking through stores. She seems better to discover new things in a pack , she stops and studies her surroundings before proceeding. At this stage, she decides which way we're going or we're not going anywhere Lol. Loves car rides though, going back and forth to each window. She's majestic, everyone loves her, intriguing .. Good with other dogs and my toddler grandkids. When she wants something, she raises up on her hindlegs and gives you both paws like she's saying please .. like everyday Lol. She sleeps in my bed in the same corner all night under a nice fan, has her favorite pillows. I'm going to look into agility training. She's my personal trainer, Lol, I love her.

I adopted a FMD mix back in late 2012. He was living on the streets of a small village in the mountains (Wugu District) above Taipei, Taiwan. Approximately 1 year old at time of adoption.
We believe he was mixed with border collie, so I got a double whammy of intelligence… which is a delight but can also be exhausting. As stated… he knows the commands as I’m thinking of them - before I even verbalize them!
He definitely has the Pack Leader Loyalty/Protection attribute and some outsiders are perhaps allowed in after some time… but once accepted, they are accepted for life.
He exhibits the FMD high small prey drive. He is also a Drama King for me (pack leader) for things like injuries but insanely good for veterinary staff… behaves like he knows they are going to help him. (He tore his forearm open on some rocks once and when the vet came into the room, she asked “So what has happened here?” and he turned to look at her and held his injured arm up to show her. LOL)
If you’re considering a young FMD mix, be prepared for the energy!! and exercise needs… but also for the need to be glued to their pack leader/protection of their pack leader.
My boo was rescued by/adopted through a very caring, sweet rescuer in Taiwan who has become a dear friend… who now adopts full time. She has many adopters in the US and Europe.

I adopted my first FMD almost exactly one year ago, and he's unlike any dog I've ever known. Affectionate, cuddly, protective, loyal, goofy, almost cat-like at times... According to EmbarkVet's DNA test, he's 100% Formosan Mountain Dog (despite having floppier ears!) with the most beautiful brindle coat I've ever seen. He gets along well with the three other dogs in our house, as well as our (admittedly confident) orange tabby cat. He's definitely nervous about strangers and shy in new situations, but with a lot of socialization, he gets better every day. I'd encourage any experienced dog owner (because I agree with the video--FMDs are not for first-timers!!) to consider adopting a Taiwan Dog if the opportunity arises. I mostly adopted mine because I believed he would do well with my other medium/large, highly active dog (and they did indeed become Best Brothers Forever almost immediately) and get along with the other animals in the house, but as it turns out...he may just be my "heart dog". I've never had a dog look at me and snuggle into me with so much love. It boggles my mind that his mother was a guard dog chained to a warehouse in Taiwan, and his ancestors wholly undomesticated, because I would swear my FMD was intentionally bred to be the "bestest boy" possible!

I adopted my Little Snow from a shelter in Taiwan about 12 years ago. She has a handicap but nothing stops her. She loves everyone and everyone loves her. Her nickname is Sidewinder because she walks sideways. She had been a street dog in mountains and hit by a truck when just 5-6 weeks old. She's wonderful! ❤

My grandparents had these dogs as guard dogs back in the day. They're pretty loud. In the country-side they're pretty useful. Sometimes there are thieves that want to steal items and these dogs will warn us.

We adopted our dog 2 1/2 years ago from a shelter in the US. She had been brought up north from a high kill shelter down south, before a hurricane hit. She was found as a stray, roughly 5 months old, wandering the streets. We have been trying to determine her breed and have found she looks and acts like so many of these pups.

I have a dog that looks and behavior of these dogs to the letter... I was told when she was gave to me that she was a black Labrador... It was only a couple weeks before I started to question that. She is more than likely mixed, of course. But I got chills watching the video.

OMG exactly the same thing. We adopted her just a month ago. We questioned what we were told the minute her ears stood up. We were told chocolate lab and get short hair mix. Which I have owned before and knew that there wasn't any German shorthair straight away. She does have the coloring of chocolate lab and webbed feet so pretty much that's the only thing I'm not questioning. But this video was so scary bc that's exactly her. Moves just exactly like her. We knew she was unique but this blew our minds!

I adopted Little Snow when she was 5. She had been a street dog in the mountains and broke her back when 6 wks old. She's 15 now and she's wonderful. She knows EVERYONE and is the neighborhood "watcher" then never forgets. Her nickname is "Sidewinder " because of how she walks. We live in California desert and only walk her 2x a day, 6am and 8pm during the hot summer months. She's a love!

I cringe every time I hear that often quoted story about the Japanese and Taiwanese university professors claiming 台灣土狗 are at the brink of extinction... They obviously did not look hard enough!
I live in Taiwan. Give me an hour and I'll find you one!
I met my girl on the street three years ago. She's the smartest, cuddliest and most athletic dog I've ever met. She hates other dogs, loves to chase cats, and understands everything we tell her. She can hike, swim and track prey like no one's business... she's very loyal to and protective of my wife and I... and she's not hyper-active at all... she's one of the most chill dogs I've ever known. But also the most stubborn. If she doesn't want to do something or walk somewhere--fuhgetaboutit. You have to reach a compromise.
As far as age goes, I think the books might be off. I met a cop while drinking one night who said his dog lived to 17; his buddies laughed at him because he gave his dog CPR as his dog was passing. A lady farmer I met said her 土狗 lived to 20 and only ate whatever she was having for dinner that night. A lady who runs a lunch cafe in my 'hood said her son's dog lived till 15.
土狗 come in three sizes. This is unrecognized by the pedigree literature. Small 土狗 are the height and length of a Shiba Inu; medium 土狗 are the most prevalent and are described in detail by the breed standards out there; large 土狗 are long and lanky beasts that are quite handsome and quite rare, with a length and height similar to a Doberman Pincer.
土狗 come in three hair types. The most common hair type is a short double coat; the top layer is slick and "oily" and the undercoat is soft and downy; this is described in the breed standards. Then there is the slightly longer, softer double coat that seems to have some characteristics of German Shepherds. Finally, there's the peach-fuzz coat, which is the mot rare. It's a short, somewhat bristly coat with no undercoat.
土狗 have a variety of colors, all black being the most predominant. Some are all yellow, and a few are all white. A white 土狗 is the hardest to come by. After black and yellow, 土狗 are usually Merle/tiger striped. If they're tiger-striped, 土狗 tend to have a predominance of orange, though some have a predominance of black with grey tiger stripes. Then there are odd-ball 土狗 with spots or a combo of 2 or more of the above. When you meet another person who has a 土狗, you always compare your babies to one another and marvel at their differences!
While there are a hand-full of people in Taiwan breeding 土狗, they mostly breed themselves up in the foothills or around the riverbanks of Taiwan. They are almost always a product of natural selection rather than of breeding practices, and tend to be much smarter and healthier than your neighbors' inbred--excuse me--"pure"-bred dog. This is why they are often classified as being a "semi-wild" breed.
If you're looking for a human-level smart dog that loves to go on adventures in nature, and sometimes around the city, then... check out some Taiwan adoption agencies... if you're looking for a trophy that your neighbors will oogle over, go elsewhere.

I had a litter of 8 puppies last October. The parents were from Taiwan, DNA certified with pedigree of authentic Taiwan Mountain Dogs. My plan is to have one litter for each generation so that we have an increasing pool of diverse genes of FMD’s. That requires everyone pitching in time and energy.

If you want a Taiwan mountain dog directly from Taiwan, be sure to do a bit homework first.
Most fmd you find in Taiwan shelters are not pure breed, though they're still great dogs, they still may have little difference on personality, appearance, or even hight and weight from the information you see here.
As an example, some fmd from shelters can grow up to 25kg or so, and some will just be around 10kg.

Early in 1950s, there are many people in Taiwan used to eat dog. However after they notice that may cause the extinction of Taiwan dogs, there are less and less dogs meat dishes until the government banned it in 2001.

Those dog eaters are Chinese immigrants who moved to Taiwan after they lost the war against the communists.
