Great Video clip! Apologies for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Mahorrla Control Clutter Method (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for decluttering your home without the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my good mate called Gray after a lifetime of fighting got excellent success with it.
Oh wow, a room that small but packed full of useful additions and well thought out setup - I never realized it was not only such a small room, but also one where TWO of you pack into it. Larger rooms are a bit of a cursed blessing, or double edged sword - our living room is about 4.5m x 5.2m, and we wind up changing at least something every six months or so. Thankfully, we feel it's finally getting closer to how we want it. Sure doesn't take long for two triple monitor computer areas, several miniature painting areas (first is dedicated airbrushing area with exterior exhaust, second is an assembly and longer term project area that's being expanded Q1 2021, and the third is my "main" painting area), a turntable djing setup, a 2x3m gaming table, extra flop/nap/bookreading space (currently an older mattress, but will be upgraded to a Jaxx 7.5' beanbag lounger eventually) and book storage (as well as gaming terrain storage) sure chew up that space rather quickly. Then again, it's a one bedroom apartment, so pretty much everything has to go into the living room. Wish my desk was that tidy though, it's still a... We'll go with artistic rendition of controlled chaos.
Haha yeah, I thought it might be a surprise to people how small this room is and that both of us sit in there! Sounds like you’ve got quite the selection of zones in your living room, but sounds like an area for any occasion!
What a neat workspace you have there! Some day when I have my move to my own house, I will create a cozy workspace similar to yours. Thanks for the inspiration!
If you can, putt metal blinders on the outside of your office window. They will block heat from the sun from entering the room in the summer. Having them on the inside, stops light, but not heat. I have them on my bedroom window, and keeps the room fairly cool in the summer.
That’s a great tip, but unfortunately our building has strict rules on the visual aesthetic given that it’s 100 years old and a communal space for multiple people. We just have to manage with opening windows whenever it gets hot.
Joe that particular green is one of my faves, it’s literally one of my brand colours. And I’d seen that wall in your livestreams and wondered about the texture. Thanks for explaining what it was! It’s absolutely GORGEOUS! Great desk setup video, I’ve been working on an IKEA dressing table due to it being narrow enough for the room it’s in, but I really need a longer and deeper desk. This was super helpful.
So glad we went with the green! It’s honestly got such a warming feeling to it and a velvety look as the light changes. I used to use a desk that was quite shallow and changing to a deeper one made such a massive difference. If you can, I’d really recommend it!
@@joeallam Yeah there's a tactile warmth to it, even in videos, that really takes it from good design to amazing design. Great choice. Thanks for the heads up on the desk! I think I might have to sacrifice my barcelona chair to gain the space needed, but would be worth it to improve my creativity and productivity
This is a beautiful room. My room is also small and I spent so much time in it, I've been doing gradual changes to it. To the point it has become one of my favorite places to be on earth.
As A very new youtuber I’ve been down the rabbit hole of desk set ups and I just want to say thank you for the motivation and all the great ideas. And Super thanks to all the links to your equipment! I can’t wait till I get there!
I wish I had a dedicated space for my computer, and I wouldn't care if it was as small as yours. It's a beautiful space and it seems very comfortable. Very nice colour paint!
A dedicated space is sometimes all it takes for increased productivity and clarity. Even if it only means having a spot where the charger plugs in at a kitchen table, it can help. I hope you achieve that soon!
Awesome video, Joe! Nice to see how all the teasers on IG stories came together into a really nice room for both work and entertainment. Sleek, elegant, well thought out. Honestly mate, probably my favourite desk setup video of all time. Going to be coming back to this video many times! Loads of great little ideas for my setup!

I like this set up quite a lot, even though I would not make mine to be the same as yours. Yours is setup for streaming and editing. I do plan to make videos soon, but not live content. I'm a little late to the party but this was a great video Joe! I'm trying to set up my 9sq meter bedroom into a sleeping and working space, and it definitely isn't the easiest task.
Man I loved your space to work and play. I have saved this video to use it as inspiration to create my own space in the house. I really liked it man, congratulations.
Dear Joe, You inspire so much. When I’m confident enough to start my own company (and maybe stop teaching geography), I want to work like you. Organized, professional and passionate. Thanks for every video you’ve made. Keep up the great work🙏🏼
Love your desk setup videos, and each year it gets better! I have a pretty similar setup (MBP 16, CalDigit TB3 dock, Focusrite audio interface, Magic Mouse, Bose QC35 II), and I am really happy with it. One thing that I could not do without anymore is an electrically adjustable standing desk. I understand that would be hard to integrate into your setup, but it really makes a huge difference to me.
Cheers! We have a similar setup indeed! I was keen for a standing desk a while back, but I found that I didn't really enjoy the look of them too much. It also wouldn't work with an ultra-wide desk for Elly and I, as we'd need different heights. If ever I got a dedicated studio, I'd probably look into it, but that's financially a LONG way away yet!
Cheers! This trolley has been such a time-saver whenever I've had to sit down and film a video. All the other nods of efficiency in the room came from that trolley to be honest. It's kinda hectic, so I think I may have to do quite an informal video on it!
Love a lot in there ♥ the monitor mount without height adjustment is something i would never do again, i hope you did hit it perfect for your needs! (feels too low?)
Cheers! The display looks low given the camera angles, but my eyeline _is_ right on the top of the frame as recommended. The desk also makes the display look small, but it's 32" so pretty large.
Dunno if your WiFi router supports it, but I just upgraded to WiFi 6 mesh (802.11 ax) via the Netgear Orbi and I am loving the massive speed increase over WiFi given I also have a fiber connection. Really recommend it, I am getting 900 to 1000 up and down over WiFi, previously I was getting a fraction of that.
Yup, this one's WiFi 6, however my other mesh one in the living room isn't. I'm pretty much plugged in 100% of the time anyway for all "static" devices and it's plenty fast enough on my mobile devices as well averaging around 400-550. Gigabit internet is just hilariously fast though, right?!
Such an awesome space you've created. I've been thinking about how to spice up the home office for another quarter of online college and this was great inspiration!
I'm curious why you use a cloudlifter? It adds gain for mics that require a lot, and 90% of interfaces provide enough gain even for an sm7b, and the podmic definitely doesn't need that much gain. I would actually be concerned the cloudlifter might actually be adding more noise to your signal in this case
That's a valid question and I originally wasn't going to get a Cloudlifter, but after a day of playing around with the PodMic I decided to get one. Essentially, I found the Focusrite needed to be at about 90-95% gain at input level in order to reach the dB levels I wanted for my streaming setup. It was around 90% onwards that I could also really hear the Focusrite pre-amps quite noticeably. It likely would have been fine without the Cloudlifter for recordings, but into the ATEM I wasn't overly keen on the digital gain it was applying for livestreams. I also could have EQ'd it out for the stream, but when monitoring in my headphones (unprocessed) it was noticeably off-putting. The Cloudlifter is a very clean signal, and I honestly haven't noticed a loss in quality for the gain it provides. Another thing to note about my setup is my normal talking volume being generally quite low and I'm also using the mic at a distance a little greater than what it's designed for, given the gaming setup and on-camera aesthetic I'm looking for. With the Cloudlifter, I have the Focusrite at about 60% on the dial and a super clean signal into my ATEM. I should probably do some comparison tests about it when I make my livestream setup video. Cheers for the thoughts!
Really good setup video man. I loved how much detail you went into, really interested to know what you're doing to the CalDigit to not power your Macbook. I've got the same combo and it never drops below 100% when editing. Would love to know more about your workflow with the Synology in the future! and one more thing, is there a specific reason you use a cloudlifter with the rode mic? I thought those were mainly for microphones like the SM7B which require an extra boost of clean gain.
Thanks man! The CalDigit doesn’t necessarily drop in power, it definitely keeps it at 100%, but I’ve just noticed some severe performance issues with things like premiere during prolonged sessions. It all disappeared as soon as I started using it with the Mac charger plugged in at the same time. I’ve also been having a lot of issues with it crashing during sleep - I’d b e interested to know if you’ve had that as well? As for the cloud lifter, someone else asked the same thing, so I’ll paste in the same reply: I originally wasn't going to get a Cloudlifter, but after a day of playing around with the PodMic I decided to get one. Essentially, I found the Focusrite needed to be at about 90-95% gain at input level in order to reach the dB levels I wanted for my streaming setup. How do you manage your battery charging routine? Had almost the same setup, but keeping Macbook connected all the time killed the battery and inflated the chassis.
I don’t have too much of a set routine if I’m honest. I probably should dedicate some time with it unplugged every so often just to make sure it’s healthy.
Hi Joe, I recently just complete my own desk build and followed yours very closely. I had already ordered the same legs and borrowed a few of your ideas such as the supporting leg and angle iron. Thanks for sharing your process it really helped
So good! Would be interested to hear more detail on the streaming side of your setup, finding it so hard to get things working on my Macbook with PS5, capture card and streaming software etc.
It's been a heavily requested video and I've continued to make improvements in the room, but feel it's now at a point of completion I'm happy with. Hope you enjoyed it!
@@joeallam Definitely turned out amazing. After seeing small bits of it on Instagram it’s been great to see a full tour, I love how optimised everything is and also how the custom desk essentially transformed the whole room!
Yeah, just bad timing really. Pretty sure I've literally only taken it out of the house twice since buying it. At least it's been my main machine so hasn't gone to waste, but I can't help but wonder on the missed potential with a desktop...
Curious about the angle iron you're using - what thickness and where did you source it from? A really good idea and not something I'd thought of for support. Thanks.

Looks so good indeed.
Also the use of the trolly is incredible, its a studio on wheels!
As for the cloud lifter, someone else asked the same thing, so I’ll paste in the same reply:
I originally wasn't going to get a Cloudlifter, but after a day of playing around with the PodMic I decided to get one.

Please make a video on the cart. I was thinking of doing something similar.
How do you manage your battery charging routine? Had almost the same setup, but keeping Macbook connected all the time killed the battery and inflated the chassis.
I don’t have too much of a set routine if I’m honest. I probably should dedicate some time with it unplugged every so often just to make sure it’s healthy.
wow, huge project, looks so comfortable & cozy!
Loved the setup. This inspires me to redo my set up too for next year
Hi Joe, I recently just complete my own desk build and followed yours very closely. I had already ordered the same legs and borrowed a few of your ideas such as the supporting leg and angle iron. Thanks for sharing your process it really helped
Nice setup. Do you tell more for your audio interface? How do you configure and use for Mac / PS / Microfone? In a few words.
This custom app look really interesting. Looking forward to see how you made it. Anyway have a happy new year
So good! Would be interested to hear more detail on the streaming side of your setup, finding it so hard to get things working on my Macbook with PS5, capture card and streaming software etc.
This is brilliant! Love the level of detail your provided and hearing about your tools
I was waiting so long for this, thank you!
Great setup !!! Feel you about the MacBook. Got the same with 8tb and barely used it 😭
Yeah, just bad timing really. Pretty sure I've literally only taken it out of the house twice since buying it. At least it's been my main machine so hasn't gone to waste, but I can't help but wonder on the missed potential with a desktop...
Great job man! What's that matte black small planter on your desk beside the monitor? That's beautiful!
Curious about the angle iron you're using - what thickness and where did you source it from? A really good idea and not something I'd thought of for support. Thanks.
Thanks for the video man! Can't wait for the streaming setup!
Love your setup, it’s definitely giving me some ideas! Cheers man
Hurry up and show us the trolly set up as I have one and need to set mine up. Thanks
