    An 18% grey wall, just for setting white balance and exposure, lol. Great job! Generous of you to share this Tom and your ideas! Cheers. PS I must just add also, when you started creating videos it was obvious you were uncomfortable in front of the camera, you were nervous and shy, that's all changed you really are the seasoned pro now, great content delivered, amusing, and a pleasure to watch, so good on you!

    That's the thing about cable management - do it once and then you're done. Well worth the extra 30 minutes to hide things properly! Maybe consider a pair of floating arms for the monitors to give you more space on the desk?

    I love this new setup. That C stand is clever. A TH-cam channel I really like called "Mediastorm" has a similar system. They tried to upgrade other TH-camrs' gear and found having different stands for monitors, cameras, lights and microphones is too chunky, so they designed a system they call a "tree". That thing has multiple types of "tree trunks" for rolling around, mounting to a desk or being stuck between floor and ceiling. Also arms for all sorts of stuff.
    I doubt whether TH-cam will allow links so I won't leave one. They are a Chinese channel by the way so it might take some translation.

  • @antnguyen

    Thought I had stumbled upon a "desk setup" TH-camr for a second. Well done sir, it's amazing what a new setup can do towards motivation to work each day.

    That was so fascinating! I've been working on something similar the past months and happy to see we've found some of the same solution - especially the cables... I don't blame you for going all in on hiding them. My brief is even tighter. Photography office / home studio combined with living room 😬

  • @extremelydave

    I must admit that the idea of file cabinets with foam inserts for camera gear was a great idea that I will be copying. The acoustic panels seem like highway robbery, but they do provide some needed zen to the room and match the chair quite nicely.

    • @helgebrekke
      @helgebrekke ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the price can be defended considering their aesthetic value and quality materials, in addition to function. If you want to do it on a budget you can just use egg cartons for acoustic dampening, but that doesn't look as nice OR smell like a sauna :-P

  • @zebedeezac9838

    Great video! One suggestion, might be worth swapping to a NAS for your digital storage so that you could have it tucked away somewhere, rather than hanging from the bottom of your desk.

  • @SvenKolb
    @SvenKolb ปีที่แล้ว

    *have to say - TH-cam is spot on with their recommendations lately! Glad I stumbled over your Channel, Thomas!
    A little tip for the chimney: A "vertical" landscape with your analogue Camera as a all over wal* lpaper with one of your islands wonderful rocky coasts in combination with a lighthouse at foggy winter sunrise. It should have a beautiful gradient to the top with a little desaturated dark tones, so it's not to much 'on your nose' but still breathtaking if you see it for the first, second, third and probably the 100s time!
    Again, glad to digitally meet you, man! Rock on!

  • @Maaniic
    @Maaniic ปีที่แล้ว

    For the storage you have the option to put all drives and NAS in a ventilated closet or similar and pull a 10Gig network cable to the desk. This will also help you avid vibrations from the desk in the HDDs.

    A project like this just feeds the soul. Great result, well done. And good to see an Aussie brand T-Shirt on you. Quicksilver started just a few kms south of me here in Melbourne. I used to get neck pains at the end of every day. I was advised to raise my monitor. It worked. I now have the centre of my monitor level with the top of my shoulder. I have to look up to see the top of the screen and that felt a bit odd at first but the reward is no more sore between the shoulder blades.

    Love the Nick Carver inspired home office. But one little thing, ok not so little, your canon pro 1000. I would have put wheels on that desk aswell, or some way of sliding it in and out, simply to give you ease of access to the maintenance cartridge and the rear feed tray. I've a pro 1000 and I've that problem at the moment but the printer is getting moved soon to a better place.

    Hey Tom, you pretty sure about have your entire storage system hanging below your desk full of movement? This kind of thing need a rock steady place once you have rotating disks on it passive of damage due to unintentional leaps coming from the desk "ups and downs". You are at risk of losing everything what you are saving there.

  • @MarkusSenior
    @MarkusSenior ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice setup and clean… but… be careful with your Raid Drive. Raids, with I assume 3.5 drives, are very sensitive to any micro shakes and movements that can destroy them over time. I would suggest turning your raid off when you raise or lower your desk. The best would be to have the raid off your desk, on a different piece of furniture.
    I am Head of IT at an Entertainment Creative Agency and unfortunately had to deal too many times with data loss of raids and other drives that had a little bit too many movements.
    Cheers from LA.

    Three things stand out in my mind above all things in your office: One is the red chair. Love it. And with those acoustic panels behind it and the floor lamp beside it that makes a very inviting corner. Two is the camera storage system you made. Love having camera equipment organized like that. Relieves a lot of anxiety when it comes time to pack for another adventure. And three is your wonderful dog wandering through and feeling at home there. We love dogs but my wife and I are no longer able to care for one. We miss them terribly.
    All the rest of your office works so well for you that I'm sure you will do some very creative things there. This is where you will soon start to grow into another, more advanced career in film technology. Good luck.

    Great Work Thomas. Just a heads up regarding the standing desk. The monitors should be mounted in such way you can adjust their height so they match your eye-level (according to all those posture guidelines). When you stand that eye-level point changes a little bit (usually monitor needs to go higher) and it's great to have a monitor stand that you can easily adjust when needed. This is probably more relevant to the non-vertical monitor :P. Otherwise you night be looking just a tiny bit (too) down without noticing and starting feeling some pain on your neck. Cheers!

    Hi Thomas, nice Job. Just discovered something new after hanging a few color prints on my wall. We can't really view photos just under "room lighting", they need some other type of light like a flood light, you know, like in a gallery. It really brings out all the fine "details" and colors you saw at the moment of development; really brings it all up. Just and inexpensive LED spot light works great. Bob.

    Cool! Your foam for gear is a very good idea. I have same idea in the corner of my mind for a while now.
    I don't really like all the gears exposed like many youtubers do. (Risk of fall, drust etc). This is way better!
    I really like your new clear wall. I never
    liked your dark wall (but it's your style so I did say nothing hehe).

      I'm not a fan of foam for cameras. I had an old film camera in a metal case with a foam insert. I didn't go near it for >10 years. When I did the camera body and lenses were all covered in gritty little bits of foam which had perished and turned to powder! It took an age to clean them. I'll never use foam inserts again! My other camera - in a case with expanded polystyrene - was perfect.

    I agree the B&W would fit with everything, but a nice three panel with vibrant colors, or maybe even one with a pop color isolation (sorry, for suggesting this one, but it could work). If it were me, I'd want something like a pop color for that wall. Obviously, this is your office, you will do whatever suits your fancy, but I find a pop of color helps. And this one could be changed out however often you want to print up something new. Whatever you put there, I am looking forward to seeing it. I am going through a bit of an office remake myself. I have to narrow down a standing desk and top (pre-made, IKEA counter top or make one myself). Keep up the good work. Thanks for the videos and the inspiration. Cheers.

    You’ve been a big inspiration to me and wow this has me dreaming up all sorts of ideas for what my own studio could look like one day. Thank you 🙏🏼
