No, you don't need to stand in front, you can go and do other things! After a lot of items have smelted, flick the levers and you will get the XP from all of the smelted items. It works much better on Bedrock edition than Java.
Hey guys lava farm won't work in java edition it only works in bedrock and spigot bukkit servers and worlds. So if u are in java and u are playing in spigot server then u can make lava farm.

it does not work with flowing lava it wil get the particles but it wil never fill-up
I’m late but you need to make sure every block is a lava source block (fill every block with lava) otherwise it won’t work :)
