    "Okay, a horse has an attack value of 1d6+4, but because it's alive and you have no training in handling it I'd give you a heavy penalty to hit chance. If you had a sword or another weapon longer than a knife or a dagger, I'd give you a bonus to damage and hit chance because of height advantage, but you don't, so I don't recommend using the horse."
    A more elegant way of doing things, isn't it? Remember that you're the DM. Just make shit up. You don't know how much damage a cleaver will do? Make it up. What do you have to roll to ride a horse? Make it up. Are there gonna be penalties for that because the ydon't have the skill, because it's night, because the horses are spooked? If you want. What is that penalty? Make it up. Make. Shit. Up.
    The way you're DMing, you could for example send the two a troll to fight. So Vee has the idea to prepare a trap by dragging a boulder up a hill to smash him Wile E Coqote style. He then lures the troll to the trap and tells you that he wants to set it off. You look in the rulebook and you can't find boulder related attacks, so you tell him he just can't do it. You didn't tell him that before he lured the troll to the trap though and the troll still appears and effortlessly kills him. While the troll rips Vee apart and gnaws on his insides, Arch makes a couple of snarky comments and else does nothing.
    The point of a DM in roleplaying is to make the world come alive. Maybe Vee is too weak to drag the boulder up a hill. Maybe he doesn't know how to prepare the trap. Maybe he's too slow to lure the troll. All valid reasons for why this could fail, but don't tell a player something can happen only to just tell him "nope" in the last second; and if the problem is that you can't find anything in the rulebook, for the love of god just _make shit up._

      while i agree with you, they don't seem to have had a discussion on what rules to use and not, and how, before the game which makes a bit of an chaotic play. Making it up as u go along when it comes to rules is a bit... at least if it is all the time and not some special circumstance house ruling stuff.

    • @mikaelhauk

      Of course it would help if Sargon was more familiar with the rules. Basic thing like knowing what the skills do would help a lot... :D

      Vee is a good roleplayer but was not making good calls for almost all of this, rolled improperly, didn't use line of sight, didn't understand his spells, didn't understand how his class worked in this or session zero and kept rule lawyering things he didn't even understand. They're all atrocious at 5e the last two sessions but there's nothing elevating Vee here besides good luck with his rolls in combat and his crazy cleric of charisma rp.

      i think the main problem is that sargon directs the players too much. the dm is supposed to be impartial, sort of... the dm is always able to adapt the rules to suit his campaign but those interpretations should be agreed upon before the campaign is begun. sargon is turning into a megalomaniac irl and it is affecting his dm style. hubris will not be kind to him. personally, i like him and hope the fall from grace is not too painful when it comes.

      "Like watching Anita Sarkeesian play video games." Surely that's uncalled for. Especially since I don't think Anita Sarkeesian ever actually played any video games. But I digress.
      Play 2nd edition. It was sleek and simple and worked just fine. Hell, I used to run great campaigns in the late 1980s out of the old AD&D manuals from the late 70s and 1 each of the d4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 20. No rules lawyers, no b.s. It worked just fine and we had a blast.

    ARCH really needs to let things go. He keeps think he knows best and blaming Vee as if Arch was right all along. Arch sent Vee to investigate the first zombie. Arch is the one that stopped them going straight for the horses. Vee wanted to run from the start and Arch stopped him. Arch stopped Vee from running from the inn after Vee started screaming. Lastly, Arch is the most cowardly fighter ever. He lets Vee tank everything when it is obvious that these enemies are really weak. Yes Vee shouldnt be afraid of kitchens and start screaming for help but Arch is playing like his character is made of paper.
    Also JUST PUNCH THINGS guys! How hard is it to just bottle neck these enemies and just wail on them! Arch you had a horse for HP soak... And you just run like a coward... You are a fighter.
    Arch even then blames Vee for not checking his rolls and telling him he was doing it wrong instead of the GM...
    Finally we have the best bit:
    Arch: Yeah we didnt need to fight in the barn at all. We could have just run away.
    Vee: Well i wanted to run away from the start.
    Arch: But then we would have been surrounded.
    Arch was playing so timidly early on and Vee tanked everything so Arch was able to get his horse. Then after doing all that Arch realises he can actually kill things but does nothing but putting blame on Yee for stupid reasons. Yelling for help in the kitchen is the only thing Vee did wrong, that and his obession with NPCs praising him. Everything else was Arches cowardice.

    Vee has a fun character to play with. He's not your standard by the book, capitalize on your stats, cookie cutter cleric and is instead this flawed human with different strengths. Let him play the role he's envisioned for himself and you might be surprised what he can accomplish. Either way! He's more fun than your boring run of the mill character.

    • @EEYore-py1bf
      @EEYore-py1bf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      More like, "how dare you pathetically flounder around, arguing and stumbling over the rules that you literally didn't bother reading". Vee didn't read the book, Arch didn't read the book, and Sargon skimmed it 6 months ago and forgot most of it. This isn't a problem of memorization, this is going in for a test without reading the material. They should have just played Pathfinder, they'd understand the rules much more and wouldn't have spent an hour figuring out stuff they should have already known.

    • @go_rilla262
      @go_rilla262 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's been awhile but I've DM'd a few campaigns. When these things would come up I would fudge it to something that makes some kind of sense (that the players can mostly agree to) and then address the proper rules at the beginning of the next session in a recap/housekeeping phase. (we did it this way last time, the books says this.) The important thing is keeping the story/session going and having fun rather than rifling through a manual.
      Let them plow through the undead on horseback (if they calmed the horses). Do a dex check to see if the undead get knocked over. If knocked over roll an attack to see if they take damage from the hooves. If an undead doesn't get knocked over, roll an attack to see if they cling to horse and try to clamber up to get at the riders. Crits give a chance to trip up the horse or knock the rider off.
      I personally think it's better to be nimble and creative rather than shackled to a rule book but other's mileage may vary depending on the personalities of the players.
      There were some hitches here and there but overall they seemed to be having fun so no harm done.

    • @EEYore-py1bf
      @EEYore-py1bf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is that they'd have to fudge ALL the rules. They didn't even do the simple attack rules correctly until the end. And yeah, no real harm done. Most people's problem is that they spent most of the session complaining about the rules.

    • @ripvanwinkle6449
      @ripvanwinkle6449 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Actually, if you were fighting, say, a gang of goblins, why on earth would they go for the dude with all the armour?"
      They don't have to. It'd just be at disadvantage, because the fighter (TANK) would have chosen the protection fighting style forcing enemies in his line of sight to attack at disadvantage against him.
      I mean for fucks sake kiddo, fighter class fighting style is done at level 1. Do you even know what you're talking about?
      Legit, Paladin info from ADND1e
      The cavalier paladin may parry up to two opponents (one with each hand, whether by shield or by weapon). A weapon parry reduces all of the (single) opponent's attack rolls by all of the cavalier's to hit bonuses (including strength, magic, weapon of choice) for that round; a shield parry reduces all of (single) opponent's attack rolls by one, and an additional reduction of one for each +1 of the shield. A cavalier parrying with the shield may not include the shield in his armor class against any other attacks (i.e., from other opponents) during that round; a character parrying with a weapon may not use that weapon to attack during that round. (Arcana rules do not permit a character to attack and parry in the same round; MyWorld rules permit the character to attack with any weapon not used to parry.) The choice to parry with the shield costs the cavalier one attack, as his attention must be given to blocking the opponent's moves.
      What's a tank again?

  • @franny2tm

    Hey Sargon, a thing I see on D&D streams (especially with new/newer DMs) is that the DM has a D&D "senpai" on hand. Someone that isn't actually a part of the campaign, but is a master when it comes to rules and all that kind of stuff. So instead of shuffling through books breaking the momentum, they'll quickly shoot a message to the senpai (usually through a text based message, and only the DM can do this) and the senpai will message back with the correct actions to take. However The DM always has the last ruling no matter what. I'm sure you can find someone that will be willing to be your "senpai" especially with your reach. If they're running their own campaign, maybe just give them a shoutout at the end of the video. Just an idea I thought I'd throw out there.

    • @Flufferz626

      My group irl has this. We'll use roll20 but are still in person. Our DM is competent and creative, but he has a secondary friend/co-worker who has one other group he has been DM of forever. This guy helps remind him of certain specific rules, and the few times we've had new members he's helped usher them in and create their character's place in the campaign. Including me. We're a group of seven and it's a blast.
      The secondary help also makes things move at a better pace and encourages role playing.

    If you don't like wounds magically healing think of it like this, it's not that you actually take damage, it's just an indicator of your overal stamina in the fight, so you'll grow tired, or get a bruise, perhaps a small cut, but you are not getting seriously injured until you hit 0 hp.

      The Thinkery I was reading it throughout the stream and the mechanics just started pissing me off. This game is really reluctant to kill players. I don't understand why a character dying has to be like doing taxes. In 1e if you reach 0 HP you fall unconscious and start losing HP until you reach -10. The only way to stop death is for a different character to come and heal you.

    • @calake94
      @calake94 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Thanks Sargon, I really appreciate it. I actually really enjoy these. 5e is streamlined and quite easy once you get into it, but I think that's a good thing to be honest. @Weeaboocrusher I wouldn't see a problem with just inserting that as the rule. GM can decide whatever they want for the rules after all.

    Me and some lads have been doing a Starfinder campaign and I swear found a mission that was so SJW it was cringe, it basically revolved around a "problematic" University lecturer giving a race realist lecture and the media, students and his superiors were all about "Muh feels" and guess what? The GM showed us the rulebook after and it ONLY contained solutions involving getting him to apologise or publicly shame himself, as a group we immediately spotted the politics and improv'd a third option where we got the REEE-ing bitch of a Head Professor to back down and wipe the slate clean by impersonating the motherfucking Dean and told the un-suspended lecturer to make the campus great again.

      Once, one of my players was sold into slavery. As soon as this pervy old man bought her, an epic slugfest insued. All this in 1st Edition AD&D, and the narative was like that scene in Punisher when he fights the russian assassin. It was brutal, fast paced at the beginning, but near the end, both were so exhausted they had penalties on their attacks. At one point, the PC pushed the old mans head into a wash basin filled with dirty water and held him there while he slammed her ribs with his elbows. She limped into the desert victorious but with only 1 or 2 HP left.
      Honestly, one of the most dynamic and dramatic combats I've ever ran.
      This hit miss hit miss shit gets old, but it is there first couple of games so he gets a pass. And everyone else seems to still be having fun. So, meh?

      There are no tanks in D&D. There are no taunt abilities, and if you are engaged with a couple of enemies, there is no way to prevent something from attacking your squishy characters. No tanks, no dps, no dedicated healers. This isn't a video game.

    • @PatrickRatman
      @PatrickRatman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      But i remember hearing about some sort of magic clothing article that makes enemies less likely to target you. Theres also simply narrative reasoning. If you have a dude with a big scary greatsword in full plate and another guy that's dressed in light rags that has a shitty dagger (because why would you choose to dress like a mage or squishy so you can draw attention to yourself) then they're more likely going to prioritize the knight that's in their faces.
      Thats assuming your DM uses logic to target players in their encounters and not meta knowledge on who they need to kill first to most likely get a TPK.
      I guess i wouldnt know since i haven't started DMing just yet, but i'm researching!

    • @EEYore-py1bf
      @EEYore-py1bf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, if you were fighting, say, a gang of goblins, why on earth would they go for the dude with all the armour? It's a hell of a lot easier to sink a knife into cloth than steel. Logic would dictate wanting to fight the weaker opponent. Obviously that can change based on context, if you're fighting a clan of orcs who live in an honour based society, and so want to challenge the strongest opponent. Logically, however, enemies will, if possible, go for the softest targets.

    Ah finally, I found something to fill the void between my group's D&D sessions.

    My chief love of this is Vee.
    But my pet peeve of any edition of a D&D game is "roll perception" 50 fucking times to find a table. Or roll this or that, for something completely unnecessary. It bogs the game down and the player's feel like weak losers for failing to break a peasants chair. A chair. CHAIR.
    Anyway, loved the video.

    really thought you guys would have prepared slightly more since the character creation stream... I mean, at least looking up such things as proficiency, skill checks and ability checks and Spell Casting (For the love of God! Read up on Cantrips and Spell Casting!) Before the stream. The story and rollplay was funny as all hell, really nice, but ya'll really should read through the basic rules for next time, or check out a youtube video on 5th edition rules at least, since, ya know, ya'll are TH-camrs and all :)
    Still, looking forward to next session! I hope this lasts without complications! And Thank You all for sharing your fun with us in the audience. :D

    I mean he DID yell "In the name of the prophet!" while bashing some pesants face in with a cleaver... just saying..

    So what should Arch name his blood soaked Rolling Pin? I think that the Orphan-Maker has a nice ring to it.

      The Orphanage for the rolling pin and the Post Birth Abortion for the cleaver.
