The highest compliment I can pay a movie is to recommend but tell them point blank that I cannot say a single word what it’s about or it will spoil something. And I to this day cannot watch Shawshank without there being tears in my eyes. There are not enough words to express the depth of affection and the amount of empathy this movie invokes. My father and I went to see this movie (while mom and my sister was shopping). At the end, I looked over at dad, and saw tears rolling down his face. That was the only time I ever saw him cry. A powerful movie, great reaction, thanks Addie.

Andy was innocent of the crime that put him in prison. Red, on the other hand, was very much guilty. Thus, the "redemption" in The Shawshank Redemption was the redemption of Red. His hope and humanity were redeemed through his friendship and loyalty to Andy, which gave him both the ability and strength to live a well-deserved good life after prison. This is also why it makes so much sense to have him as the narrator of the story. Well, that, and Morgan Freeman's distinctive voice. It's an absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful story about the strength of friendship in the hardest of places. One of the best films of all time in my opinion.
You can see Red losing his grasp on the reality of being free with each parole hearing. He starts all buttoned up, sitting right down. The second, he sits but his shirt isn't buttoned fully. The final hearing, he's relaxed but frustrated, not buttoned fully and waits to be told to sit. Then he vents his frustrations about his regret. Explaining how he wishes he could tell himself but knows it too late.
I think even if andy was innocent he was still guilty in his mind. Thats what he say to red in their last conversation in prison « i was to silent like a close book » « i didnot show i loved her thats why she died ». And thats at that timing that he decide to escape, once he made redemtion with himself
Brooks suicide is a punch in the gut for most people. Like you said, you think it's going that way and then you see him carving his name and take a sigh of relief and then boom. That's why when Red looks like he's doing the same thing you get nervous. There is a reason this movie is so beloved. It's just perfect. The casting, the pacing, everything.
Yeah when Red looks like he’s about to do it, you keep telling yourself you hope he doesn’t follow Brooks and winds up this way. The way this movie was written and directed was just soo outstanding, so far no other movie we able to top this masterpiece

Andy was being factual and straightforward, but the warden heard a Machiavellian threat in his words that Andy truly hadn't intended. Often times, really smart people are unaware of how others think and feel, and they elicit reactions that are startling and incomprehensible to them because of this.
The sequence with Red sitting in the Dark waiting for morning all the way through to the poster rip, that is one of the greatest scenes in movie history. To think that the worst has happened only to discover the best has happened. I love it
I would have given anything to have seen this immediately when it came out. For some reason I put it off, I regretted that a lot. I can't remember when I first saw it but it became a favorite immediately afterwards. This is why I believe reaction videos are a favorite of mine. Don't beat yourself up. Most people slept on it back then, when it came out. It absolutely tanked in theatres. Bad marketing, (bad title-sorry Stephen) lack of commitment by Columbia distribution. Plus, it was up against sensations like Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, and a trend toward blockbusters. Later, home video sales/word of mouth via Warner Home Video is what finally brought it to prominence, not to mention Turner obtaining the rights, and blasting it on TNT in 1997. Hope springs eternal.
exactly what i said to friend of mine the other day. we are both old men. 60 each. and he has always been a fan of these sort of videos. i never was, but he has gone into hospital with cancer and needs a long convalescence, and so i watched addies channel to find him some new material to watch while he is in there for a few weeks. and what i realised is that the next generation watching these movies for the first time lets you relive the joy of when you saw it the first time. and addie is just the best. long may this channel flourish, and i hope she becomes a millionaire from it. cheers addie.
I actually got to meet Bob Gunton (The Warden) in 2018 and he’s one of the nicest performers I’ve ever had the privilege to meet and spend time with. I think it’s a real testament to his talent that someone so friendly and kind IRL can portray such an evil character.
It takes a lot of talent and dedication to the craft to portray a truly and deeply despicable person. And to know that everyone you love and everyone you will ever meet will forever associate you with that character. He has gone on to play some other very interesting characters.
Usually, the better someone can play a villain, the nicer they actually are. An actually bad person doesn’t understand what bad is. A good person does; they have seen it and rejected it.
Some movies, very few of them, you can watch over and over and never get bored. The type of movie you'll always watch when its on TV. This movie is one of them.
When this film came out, it was considered a flop because it didn't gross that much money even though it was nominated for a whole bunch of Academy Awards. The thing that saved this movie and made it a classic is the fact that it was shown on TV over and over and it gained quite the following.
I loved this movie so much as a kid that I recorded the audio onto tape and listened to it going to bed. At one time I could repeat the movie almost word for word!
Brooks’ death is one of the saddest scenes ever filmed. I was cleaning house one day with ambient music streaming and I suddenly got teary. The piano piece accompaniment to that scene was playing and it moved me when I wasn’t even aware what I was listening too.
Just as a blade was able to be made that was held to someone's throat, a sharp enough edge to cut the paper could be made and used. One just has to trace out the footprint of the hammer. One won't likely cut deep enough at first, so one turns back to near the last pages that were cut, and then continue with that same shape to cut. Repeat until deep enough to fully contain it. The acquisition of the hammer is already in the movie, so I didn't bother with that part.
Originally the film ended the same way the novel did, with Redd on the bus hoping he can make it across the border. Test audiences were disappointed that they didn't see Andy and Redd reunite. So they got Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman back to film the scene on the beach.
I would have preferred the ending of the bus driving away, fading to a shot of the Pacific. You could easily assume, given the hopeful tone of the ending as it is progressing, that Red is going to make it. That's more in keeping with the overall theme of the movie. The ending they went with is fine, it's just a little bit sappy.
No soul in this world would ever not feel sad or shed tears to "Brooks was here" part. This is the best movie ever done, like in general, maybe are those who are better at visuals, better at story, better at anything, but never as complete as this one.

Frank Darabont is known for directing three of the best King adaptions of his books. Along with this one, he also did The Green Mile and The Mist. The other director being Rob Reiner who responsible for Stand By Me and Misery. Loved your reation, Addie.

Another one of my favorites : Hearts in Atlantis is a 2001 American mystery drama film directed by Scott Hicks and starring Anthony Hopkins and Anton Yelchin. It is loosely adapted from Stephen King's Dark Tower tie-in Low Men in Yellow Coats, a novella in the 1999 collection Hearts in Atlantis after which the film was named.
Interesting thing about this movie, and it's something I think about from time to time. When Red goes up for parole in the beginning he's apologetic, pleading, making promises, saying all the things he thinks they want to hear. Rejected. Near the end when he goes up for parole, he doesnt seem to care, resigned to being rejected, not even cordial. Paroled.
Fun facts: 1) Red's mug shot was Morgan's son. 2) Andy hid the rock hammer in the Bible, at the beginning of "Exodus" ("exit"). 3) Red told Andy that hope was a "shitty pipe dream". Andy realized his hope escaping through a "shitty pipe".
Im sure glad i dont sit and watch movies in this type of manner trying to figure out little clues and blah blah blah. Couldnt imagime how much worse my movie going experience would be focusing on things that dont actually matter

it's astounding to me that Stephen King is known as the master of horror but some of his absolutely best movies don't involve one iota of horror...this one, 'Misery' (albeit creepy no supernatural aspect) and 'Stand by Me' are all incredible films.
I agree completely. I've always thought that the problem with turning King's books into movies is that his writing is just so well crafted and precise that it can't be duplicated on screen.
The Shawshank Redemption has always been one of my All Time favorite movies. I remember balling the first time I watched it when I was like 12. Still amazing.

This film shares the top spot on my all-time fav films. Incredible cast. So glad you watched it. To this day.. the character 'Brooks' still gets to me. The look on Dufresne's happy face every time he did something wonderful.. a month of solitude and still smiles. Those wonderful human moments. Even with the 'hard to watch' moments.. it's a film I watch any chance I get. What makes it more fun is watching others watching for the first time. I also watched it 'blind' at the cinema. Not many ppl watched back then but it's one of the few films I actually clapped at the end of the credits. One of those films that 'taught' you a lil about life. I was a 'changed' man after watching this film.. Hehe..
Andy was the main character, but it was Red's Redemption. Andy didn't commit a crime so there was nothing to redeem. Red did commit a horrible crime(sabotaged the brakes on his wife's car after taking out a large life insurance policy on her. Ended up killing her, the neighbor and the neighbor's child). He found this redemption at the end after Andy broke out of prison, Red finally accepted responsibility for his actions and voiced his regret/remorse, and said let's cut the bullshit to the parole board to gain his freedom and redemption.
So, the one part of the short story that I wish they would have left in, but I can understand why they didn't was Jake. They found Jake, starved to death. He was institutionalized as well... couldn't survive on the outside.
I always think about that every time I see this movie. Watching Brooks is feeding the birds and hoping Jake will show up, but knowing Jake is dead - it's heartbreaking.
I do believe that this is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all-time. Story by Stephen King, written and directed by Frank Darabont (in his prime), and an absolutely stellar cast. And no matter how many times I watch it, nor how many reactions I've seen, I will never not shed a tear for Brooks Hatlen. 😢

Trivia: the building in which the movie was shot (Ohio state reformatory) was a real prison due for demolition and saved thanks to the movie studio wanting to film there. It's now a museum with guided tours.

Read the Stephen King book "Different Seasons". The novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" represents spring. The book also contains "The Body" which represents fall, and was adapted into the movie "Stand By Me".
I like how Andy tells Heywood that he'll like The Count of Monte Cristo, by "Dumbass", it's about a jailbreak. Done in a very similar way to Andy's own jailbreak. 😀
He didn’t plan it from the beginning. He genuinely got the rock hammer for rocks. It wasn’t till he was carving his name in the wall and a chunk of wall fell at his feet. Then he ran to redd for the poster.

Addie, many years ago Stephen King wrote a short collection of longish stories called "Different Seasons". This was one of those stories. The movie "Stand By Me" also came from that collection, and also "Apt Pupil". You should buy yourself a copy of that book and read it, I think you would like it. Loved your reaction! 😊 JB
I can NOT believe you called the rock hammer deception!!! Smart. 😁 I've seen other reactors call the poster gambit, even just before, like you did Addie. But when me and my dumb friends saw this in 1994 we were all blown away. Every beat hit like a train, and we've mostly spend the interim occasionally rewatching this masterpiece if only to try to catch a bit of that original joy and emotion.
In Stephen King's novel Red was a white guy with red hair. Thats why he was called Red. In the movie they had to come up with a reason why Morgan Freemon was called Red. So they gave him the line of "Maybe it's because I'm Irish."
Great reaction to a great movie one of my top 10 movies of all time and I have watched over 2500 movies in my lifetime. Just a few facts about the movie and info. 1. When Andy meets Redd for the first time in the yard, he asked him why they call him Redd, he tells him maybe because I’m Irish. The reason was the part of Redd was to be played by a white guy who was going to be Irish and his last name was Redding, but in the end Morgan got the part and the director kept that line in.. maybe because I’m Irish… so Redd was short for Redding. 2. The young photo of Morgan in the beginning, was a photo of his real son. 3. His son is also in the movie for one scene and that was or he was the guy behind the fence doing the fishing pole gesture with a hat on. 4. The posters of different women was a sign of time passing and years. 5. When Brooks is let out of prison, as he steps out, you see the guards behind him. This represents that he was still stuck or trapped in the same place. That’s why he killed him self. 6. When we see Redd leaving, you see the guards are in front of him as he steps out, meaning he was free. 7. The ending of the movie was Andy driving away with the top rolled down. When it was shown to a test audience they did not like it, they wanted Andy and Redd to reunite… so they went back and shot that ending on the beach as we see… that makes the movie complete. Another great movie from the same director and one of my top 5 movies of all time that you should watch and react to is The Green Mile…. Both movies are from Steven King Novels…. Thank you.

I love that movie! It was sweet that it made you tear up and cry... it did the same to me! PERFECT casting. That was where I first became aware of Morgan Freeman. It's just gut-wrenching, but wonderful at the same time.

Red WAS Irish in the book this is based on; they called him that because he had red hair. but when casting they saw Morgan Freeman did such a good job in the part they let it go.
The exterior shots of "Shawshank" were filmed at the Mansfield Reformatory, just outside Mansfield, Ohio. They have Shawshank tours and this time of the year the old section of the prison hosts a haunted house.
One of the best films ever made and one of my all time favourites ever since I saw it. The velvet voice of Morgan Freeman as the narrator adds so much to the feeling of the film as well as telling the story. Brooks' situation in seeing the outside world after so many changes reminds me of a video I saw recently. A man was taking his brother out, having just completed a lengthy sentence, and the video captures the shocked look on his face when he pays the bill at a bar using his mobile phone. It's easy to forget how fast the world is changing, never mind how much it had changed during Brooks' 50 year stretch.

I've always loved that the rock hammer was stored and bookmarked at the start of Exodus. The tool to make his own exodus was in the appropriate place.

I would have preferred the ending of the bus driving away, fading to a shot of the Pacific. You could easily assume, given the hopeful tone of the ending as it is progressing, that Red is going to make it. That's more in keeping with the overall theme of the movie.
The ending they went with is fine, it's just a little bit sappy.
Thomas Newman's Score is the unsung hero of this movie
No soul in this world would ever not feel sad or shed tears to "Brooks was here" part. This is the best movie ever done, like in general, maybe are those who are better at visuals, better at story, better at anything, but never as complete as this one.
They put you here for life, and that's exactly what they take.
Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is one of Stephen King's greatest stories.

A strange movie, reading the premise you'd think "Nah, not for me" but it's one of the best movies you'll ever watch. The final Brooks scene gets me every time.

Frank Darabont is known for directing three of the best King adaptions of his books. Along with this one, he also did The Green Mile and The Mist. The other director being Rob Reiner who responsible for Stand By Me and Misery. Loved your reation, Addie.

Another one of my favorites : Hearts in Atlantis is a 2001 American mystery drama film directed by Scott Hicks and starring Anthony Hopkins and Anton Yelchin. It is loosely adapted from Stephen King's Dark Tower tie-in Low Men in Yellow Coats, a novella in the 1999 collection Hearts in Atlantis after which the film was named.
Interesting thing about this movie, and it's something I think about from time to time. When Red goes up for parole in the beginning he's apologetic, pleading, making promises, saying all the things he thinks they want to hear. Rejected. Near the end when he goes up for parole, he doesnt seem to care, resigned to being rejected, not even cordial. Paroled.

1) Red's mug shot was Morgan's son.
2) Andy hid the rock hammer in the Bible, at the beginning of "Exodus" ("exit").

it's astounding to me that Stephen King is known as the master of horror but some of his absolutely best movies don't involve one iota of horror...this one, 'Misery' (albeit creepy no supernatural aspect) and 'Stand by Me' are all incredible films.
I agree completely. I've always thought that the problem with turning King's books into movies is that his writing is just so well crafted and precise that it can't be duplicated on screen.
Misery is 100% horror, just not supernatural.
Green Mile isn't really horror either.
It may not be classified as horror, but the prospect of getting a double life sentence for crimes you didn’t even commit is horrific enough.

The Shawshank Redemption has always been one of my All Time favorite movies. I remember balling the first time I watched it when I was like 12. Still amazing.
When she said "Morgan Free-man" at 27:53, I laughed out loud. That was one of the dumbest jokes I ever heard. It was hilarious.

This film shares the top spot on my all-time fav films. Incredible cast. So glad you watched it.
To this day.. the character 'Brooks' still gets to me. The look on Dufresne's happy face every time he did something wonderful.. a month of solitude and still smiles. Those wonderful human moments.
Even with the 'hard to watch' moments.. it's a film I watch any chance I get.
What makes it more fun is watching others watching for the first time.
I also watched it 'blind' at the cinema. Not many ppl watched back then but it's one of the few films I actually clapped at the end of the credits.

I was a 'changed' man after watching this film.. Hehe..
Andy was the main character, but it was Red's Redemption. Andy didn't commit a crime so there was nothing to redeem. Red did commit a horrible crime(sabotaged the brakes on his wife's car after taking out a large life insurance policy on her. Ended up killing her, the neighbor and the neighbor's child). He found this redemption at the end after Andy broke out of prison, Red finally accepted responsibility for his actions and voiced his regret/remorse, and said let's cut the bullshit to the parole board to gain his freedom and redemption.
I'm always surprised that people haven't seen this. It used to come on TV ALL the time. That and Back to the Future were always on somewhere.
I haven't watched tv for 13 years. But i've seen a thousand movies in that time.

And makes zero sense when they show them meet up at the end. Est audiences shouldn't have control over a film.
So, the one part of the short story that I wish they would have left in, but I can understand why they didn't was Jake. They found Jake, starved to death. He was institutionalized as well... couldn't survive on the outside.
I always think about that every time I see this movie. Watching Brooks is feeding the birds and hoping Jake will show up, but knowing Jake is dead - it's heartbreaking.
I do believe that this is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all-time.
Story by Stephen King, written and directed by Frank Darabont (in his prime), and an absolutely stellar cast.
And no matter how many times I watch it, nor how many reactions I've seen, I will never not shed a tear for Brooks Hatlen. 😢

Trivia: the building in which the movie was shot (Ohio state reformatory) was a real prison due for demolition and saved thanks to the movie studio wanting to film there. It's now a museum with guided tours.

Watching this movie for the first time, it’s not hard to see why it has stood #1 on IMDB for over a year now (to my knowledge). It just gets better with each viewing.
Read the Stephen King book "Different Seasons". The novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" represents spring. The book also contains "The Body" which represents fall, and was adapted into the movie "Stand By Me".
I like how Andy tells Heywood that he'll like The Count of Monte Cristo, by "Dumbass", it's about a jailbreak. Done in a very similar way to Andy's own jailbreak. 😀

He didn’t plan it from the beginning. He genuinely got the rock hammer for rocks. It wasn’t till he was carving his name in the wall and a chunk of wall fell at his feet. Then he ran to redd for the poster.

Addie, many years ago Stephen King wrote a short collection of longish stories called "Different Seasons". This was one of those stories. The movie "Stand By Me" also came from that collection, and also "Apt Pupil". You should buy yourself a copy of that book and read it, I think you would like it. Loved your reaction! 😊 JB

I've seen other reactors call the poster gambit, even just before, like you did Addie. But when me and my dumb friends saw this in 1994 we were all blown away. Every beat hit like a train, and we've mostly spend the interim occasionally rewatching this masterpiece if only to try to catch a bit of that original joy and emotion.

In Stephen King's novel Red was a white guy with red hair. Thats why he was called Red. In the movie they had to come up with a reason why Morgan Freemon was called Red. So they gave him the line of "Maybe it's because I'm Irish."
Great reaction to a great movie one of my top 10 movies of all time and I have watched over 2500 movies in my lifetime. Just a few facts about the movie and info.
1. When Andy meets Redd for the first time in the yard, he asked him why they call him Redd, he tells him maybe because I’m Irish.
The reason was the part of Redd was to be played by a white guy who was going to be Irish and his last name was Redding, but in the end Morgan got the part and the director kept that line in.. maybe because I’m Irish… so Redd was short for Redding.
2. The young photo of Morgan in the beginning, was a photo of his real son.
3. His son is also in the movie for one scene and that was or he was the guy behind the fence doing the fishing pole gesture with a hat on.
4. The posters of different women was a sign of time passing and years.
5. When Brooks is let out of prison, as he steps out, you see the guards behind him. This represents that he was still stuck or trapped in the same place. That’s why he killed him self.
6. When we see Redd leaving, you see the guards are in front of him as he steps out, meaning he was free.
7. The ending of the movie was Andy driving away with the top rolled down. When it was shown to a test audience they did not like it, they wanted Andy and Redd to reunite… so they went back and shot that ending on the beach as we see… that makes the movie complete.
Another great movie from the same director and one of my top 5 movies of all time that you should watch and react to is The Green Mile…. Both movies are from Steven King Novels…. Thank you.
The best part about this movie is that no matter how many times you watch this movie, you will get that same feeling every time. For me, the Shawshank Redemption is the best movie ever made.... top 3 anyway.

I love that movie! It was sweet that it made you tear up and cry... it did the same to me! PERFECT casting. That was where I first became aware of Morgan Freeman. It's just gut-wrenching, but wonderful at the same time.

The exterior shots of "Shawshank" were filmed at the Mansfield Reformatory, just outside Mansfield, Ohio. They have Shawshank tours and this time of the year the old section of the prison hosts a haunted house.

One of the best films ever made and one of my all time favourites ever since I saw it. The velvet voice of Morgan Freeman as the narrator adds so much to the feeling of the film as well as telling the story.
Brooks' situation in seeing the outside world after so many changes reminds me of a video I saw recently. A man was taking his brother out, having just completed a lengthy sentence, and the video captures the shocked look on his face when he pays the bill at a bar using his mobile phone. It's easy to forget how fast the world is changing, never mind how much it had changed during Brooks' 50 year stretch.
Brooks aka James Whitmore scene was tough. Ex inmates really need a strong support system once out of prison and back in the real world.
Brooks & Tommy deserve so much better.
