      2- Stephen King tried to "unpigeonhole" himself early in his career by using a pen name "Richard Bachman" so he could write other genres besides horror like 'The Running Man' and because his publisher did not want to oversaturate the market by releasing more than 1 Stephen King novel a year and to test himself to see if his success was based on talent or luck but it quickly got out that Richard Bachman was Stephen King

The books were originally released in a series of 6 which would have been perfect for episodic television. The movie was great but the whole subplot of Tom Hanks' character having an orderly at the old age home mistreat him the way Percy mistreated the prisoners added another level of intrigue and suspense to the story but that would have made it a 4 hour movie to tell that story properly and give it justice.

      By the time they released Brooks, two world wars had happened, the population of the US had doubled, the roads were paved and full of fast shiny cars. There were planes full of people soaring overhead, and he was put up in a well-lit town with neon signs, streetlights, and homes glowing with electric light.

    This movie is jampacked with great scenes. You can call me a sucker or whatever else you fancy, but the ending when Red and Andy reunite pulls at my heart strings every time. Those kinds of endings I usually find sappy, but I felt in this movie that it was very much earned and deserved considering the raw brutality and heartbreak they lived through for decades. It's one of two movies in my life where the ending made me shed a tear first time watching it. The other is Terminator 2 if you're wondering lol. The thumbs up is when it got me.

    The scene that stands out is the opera music scene, which Stephen King didn't care for. I understand why some people may not care for it, as it kind of turns the movie into a 50's Disney movie. But I remember seeing that for the first time when the movie came out to cable in the 90's, and completely understanding what Andy is about. And it goes without saying, this is my favorite movie ending of all time. Frank Darabont almost didn't put that in there (the scene where Andy and Red are reunited), and was originally going to end with Red's line about the Pacific being as blue as it has been in his dreams. I believe it was one of Darabont's producers who said that he absolutely couldn't rob the audience of that moment, and it's what makes this movie nearly perfect. I simply adore this film. There isn't one bad scene.

I've seen a lot of prison movies and shows evidently, i have the whole series of Oz on DVD. Admittedly, the story isn't always the best in Oz, but the actors are believable and it's intriguing to watch, some pretty good actors in there, i think there's 4 actors that went on to be in Dexter in that show, Maria Laguerta/James Doakes/Batista are in it. idk i have a lot of fav characters from that show, Adabese/Beecher/Schillinger/Kareem Saed. Stephen King gets a lot of crap because the movie adaptations of his works usually suck, but when they're not horror stories, they tend to work very well as films because he's very gifted at creating believable characters with interesting relationships. He does that in his horror books, but when he does that in a non-horror story it kind of shines more because there's no monster or catastrophe of weird thing happening to distract from it. He also gets a lot of undeserving crap as a writer from snobbish readers, especially snobbish horror readers, because at some point it became cool to dismiss his whole mountain of a body of work just because some books aren't awesome or just because according to some people he's inferior to Poe or Lovecraft or whomever, when nobody did the comparison in the first place. I mean, say what you want about the guy, but he's a freaking machine at writing tons and tons of books, very few of which are honestly bad, and he has consistently being humble about his career and body of work, usually comparing his books to the equivalent of a Big Mac in the sense that they're not necessarily good but they're enjoyable if you go into them aware that what you're consuming isn't "high art" but simple entertainment. And even then, I think the guy is not giving himself enough credit because he's certainly a better writer than the equivalent of a Big Mac cook as this movie, Stand By Me, the Green Mile, the Stand, Carrie, and so many other of his stories (and movies based on them) show.

    • @IbrahimHoldsForth
      @IbrahimHoldsForth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely agreed. I observe above that King pigeonholed himself as a "horror writer" and had the ability to churn out such novels regularly but in works like "The Green Mile" (which has super-natural non-horror elements) and in the collection "Different Seasons" you can see that he could possibly have taken a different direction after his successful debut in the early 70s.

      @ccchhhrrriiisss100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good point. THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO is my favorite book of all time. Unfortunately, it has never been accurately adapted by any filmmakers. They either ignore the story altogether or turn the second half into a Zorro story. The book, however, doesn't have a "happily ever after" ending. Edmund Dantes doesn't get his girl (Mercedes) back. Her son is not his son. He doesn't even keep the money. In fact, the book is largely open-ended. It implies that -- finally -- happiness might possibly be on the cards for Dantes.
      This film (The Shawshank Redemption) kind of captures the ending of Dumas' book quite perfectly.
