Why Dungeons Used to Terrify Me in WoW (And How I Got Over It)

  • In this video, I share my personal journey of overcoming dungeon anxiety in World of Warcraft. For years, I avoided group content like dungeons and raids because of the fear of making mistakes and the pressure to perform. As a visually impaired player, this added an extra layer of challenge, making me feel anxious about joining groups.
But after years of avoiding dungeons, I finally took the leap and even went from avoiding them to healing and tanking. I talk about what held me back, how I got over it, and why the right mindset made all the difference.
Whether you’ve struggled with group content in WoW or you’re curious about how to face your own challenges in games (and life!), I hope this video encourages you to take that first step. It’s not always easy, but with persistence and a bit of support, you can break through those mental barriers.

I would like to remind everyone that if you've never personally struggled with anxiety, it may be harder to understand the struggle that comes with it. Even if it is in a video game, it's still a place where you are interacting with people.
With all that being said, any belittling or disrespectful comments, especially toward those struggling with anxiety or challenges, will not be tolerated and will result in an immediate ban. Let's keep the conversation respectful and helpful for everyone.

Bro as I said before, your channel is such a gem! I hope MANY more people will see your videos!
I remember how scary it was for me to heal raid for the first time, it was Siege of Ogrimmar during 5.4 in MoP. I was very lucky to find a really chilled-out raid leader who took me for a ride just for fun. And I did my best! He invited me again and again and I trained and trained more. In WoD I didn't have any anxiety whatsoever.
Right now I want to try myself as a tank and I always write that I am new and I will appreciate any help during dungeon run. 90% of people are very chill when I write it and run goes fine

I have so much to say on this topic, but you honestly said it best at 9:16. People have many opinions, some which are just outright extreme, and you can't let these people spoil your fun, or halt your progress as a learning player. This goes for people in your day to day life too. Remember it's okay to fail, we learn from failure. If someone talks down to you, brush it off (even if you have to almost force yourself to), block them even, and keep on doing your thing.

Thanks man, I have such bad dungeon anxiety. I cannot force myself to stay in a queue for a normal leveling dungeon for fear of failing the group. I do not have much confidence in my abilities, and I feel like I'm dragging the group down. I have a ton of fun playing overworld content, but even normal dungeons intimidate me. I'm going to give it a shot tonight.

You got this! And no matter what happens, just showing up and trying is a win.

The best way to get over your group content anxiety is to just run your own key. You can filter out all of the players that won’t be patient and you can select people that have like-minded experience and want to learn.
Set small goals for yourself starting out, not big ones. Like getting every dungeon completed up to +2 - but don’t worry about timing.

In regard to getting into mythic+, I think this is fantastic advice!

Great video and great message. It can definitely be stressful sometimes to run pug groups and randoms, but if you have the confidence in your performance, you will be good.

But it's hard to get confidence when you get heckled out of groups.

Dude that UI slaps. If I didn't know what WoWs UI looked like, I'd think this was default. Awesome!!

Inspiring. I avoid dungeons because I got kicked once. Maybe because I was one of those kids who got picked last for playground games, I took that to heart. Maybe I could try again.

i just recently began tanking and started M+ and i got yelled at allot and i got this feeling of being scared to join keys... but now i have a wonderful way to deal with this! if i get yelled at for being bad i just tell them "its better us brick a key and you actually be able to play then you sit in dungeon finder for 4 hours and if you don't like the way i tank go play tank yourself so you can have runs go the way you want! or is that too scarry for you!"

Another good video man! Question though, what add on are you using for your floating damage numbers??

ElvUI allows me to change all the font including combat text. Lately, I've been using Lemon Milk Bold, but I also like a more obscure font that I don't even remember where I found called BKAIOOM.

the best advice i can give you is: Make that game to YOUR game. All your fear comes from how you can be good enough for other players. Dont play their game, decide how it can be your game and sorround you with people that tolerate your style. For the rest there is an addon called "i remember you" the new personal black list.

That is some good advice but even for the slightest mistake you get kicked from random groups theses Days, even as a not handicapped Person which is sad but all that most players are worried about these days is not having even one millisecond wasted of their time because some other player makes a mistake.
They rather kick you and search for a replacement specially if you playing DPS it is a sad World of Warcraft out there.

This reminds me of a TH-cam video from Folding Ideas, "Why it's Rude to Suck at WoW". There is definitely a long standing community level problem that only seems to be getting worse and honestly, I'm not entirely sure how to fix it. I definitely think there's a valid aversion to not wanting to run group content in an mmo full of players that behave this way. Which may contribute to, but is a slightly separate issue to not wanting to run them because of social anxiety.

@@The_Kephas i loved dungeons in classic and burning crusade. Somehow everyone sucked at it. Just a bit more or less. And if you always wiped, the group tried to get better and to figure out how the boss be killed. Then i was out of the dungeon game until warlords of draenor and people suddenly were so awful. Sometimes we even got kicked before the first boss, just because we said we never have been to this dungeon and if there is something important to know before the fight...
Since then i am so damn scared to go for dungeons. And the longer i was avoiding it, the more is am scared and i have no idea how everything "harder" than the new companion dungeons is. What i should expect or if my gear or skill is anywhere near going for LFG/normal/heroic/mythic. And i miss out on so much stuff. :(

I have a good bit more experience since that first video, and so I sympathize with you and everyone else who feels the frustration with the community. I think that while the two are connected, there's a distinct line between not wanting to run a dungeon out of disinterest in dealing with a toxic community vs not running them out of social anxiety. Which is why this video focuses on the ladder.
I stopped playing Cata Classic because of how bad the dungeon experience was. But it wasn't out of anxiety or pressure, it was simply because the experience wasn't fun. I think there's a conversation to be had there. Why it's so hard to find tanks and healers and why more people are running Delves in favor of Mythic+. It's mostly a community problem.
