    There are those songs that literally transport you to a different place. You can feel the breeze and smell the ocean water… “the canvas can do miracles… just you wait and see..” Incredible lyric.

    I spent years listening to this as I sailed the Gulf, the Pacific, and assorted bays. There's no song that better captures the beauty and rhythm of an easy sea passage. I don't sail these days, but when I hear this song, the motion of the boat, the pull of the filled sails, and the soft shush of the waves against the hull all come back. It's perfect.

    I remember when Christopher Cross's first album came out in 1979 & we all bought a copy. The whole album was good with one hit after another including "Ride Like The Wind", "Never Be The Same", "Say You'll Be Mine" etc. He won 5 Grammy Awards for it. In 1981 Cross released "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" . The song won the Oscar for Best Original Song. He released a 2nd album in 1983 with a few hits on it such as "All Right", "No Time For Talk", & "Think Of Laura". But sadly after that his fame declined. Success came quickly, all at once & then suddenly faded. Too bad as he was very talented.

    Gen X-ers, we were SO lucky to have this music. Something so ethereal, and dare I say spiritual, like Sailing would never make it onto the radio today. I'm so glad I was there for the greatest singer-songwriter era EVER.

    Man... 1980, driving down Sunset Blvd. to the beach, listening to this. I can close my eyes and I'm there. Crazy. Ride Like the Wind is fun - hit that one next. :)

      I used to drive Sunset to the sea during the 70s and yes, this song is evocative. Steely Dan, Babylon Sisters, "drive down Sunset to the sea" Just like us. I couldn't believe the lyric when I first heard it in 1980, that was us, looking for some sisters at the beach.

    The song is actually about painting. “The canvas can do miracles”. I saw Christopher Cross in concert a couple of years ago and he said that sailing was actually a metaphor for painting. “Ride Like the Wind” is also a must listen.

    • @TS-ef2gv
      @TS-ef2gv 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's odd. I'm all about clever metaphors, but the lyrics to Sailing seem very literal and make no sense as a metaphor for anything, especially painting. Even the gentle waves of the melody strongly suggest sailing.

    In an interview recently, Chris said the song was meant to start with the strings, but it was on a loop and somehow the Orchestra part started before the strings and his brother in law was there with the producer, he knows very little about music but said, thats cool man. Southern Cross is another great Sailing song by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Living in New England, parents had a sailboat. Just visited Boothbay Harbor Maine for Schooner Days and had a ride on a beautiful Windjammer sailboat. It's back to all natural sailing, nothing technical to help with sailboats. Especially for those that sail long distances, like up and down the east coast.

    If you watch his interview with Rick Beato, you'll see that the music gods really favored him. From the beautiful string opening (which was an accident) to sending his demo tape to the wrong person at the studio who decided to listen to it, none of that, however, has anything to do with talent. You either have it or you don't, and Christopher Cross definitely has talent.

    The late 70's /early 80's immediately revisits me when I hear this music. In deference to what you guys are doing; being open-minded and discovering music without a preconception of what it is supposed to be, it was a time in my life when everything was on the AM radio and you just accepted what you liked, without judging it. One thing most people don't realize is how amazing Christopher is as a guitar player. Not joking, he absolutely shreds 🤘

    Another great yacht rocker that you two guy's and commenters will love is "Key Largo" by Bertie Higgins. Have you guy's ever heard of the Canadian band
    Chilliwack from Vancouver, BC? They have a ton of great pop rock songs (Also check out their various LP's, CD's and greatest hits etc.). Two virtually unknown

    One of the greatest songwriter, singer, guitarists of all time. I was just listening the hits album today.. SO good. Fun Fact the orchestrated strings intro was originally an accident. He and his brother in law at the time were in the studio and he was going to play the song for him and the tapes were loaded and it played the tape with the orchestra first, and then the song. And his brother in law said, Hey that was a great idea starting the song with the strings. Christopher said, he was like yeah, yeah that is a good idea.. And had it added to the intro..

    My request is The Captain Of Her Heart by Double. Quintessential 80s easy listening. Features that "ocean" piano sound because "Captain" Of Her Heart. Topped off with some 80s saxophone bliss, thick bass, and silky vocals. It's a MUST LISTEN. I can guarantee you guys will think it's fire if you thought this one was.
