Sailing is one of the very best songs of the 80s. I never tire of hearing it.
1979 i think
@@davidloftus300 "Sailing" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980 and at the 1981 Grammy awards, recognizing works from 1980. won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s).
@@davidloftus300 Yes so many things happened that year and I remember hearing this over and over. Great summer.
I would go even one step further and say that it’s one of the greatest songs of all time.
hearing 'Sailing' on the radio at a low point in my life actually set me off on a whole new existential mission to change my life, and it WORKED....A song as a magic spell, or incantation?.....
Beautiful 🙏🏼✌️
Amazing 🤟🏽
It has to be. Whether or not people recognize it I've always felt that way. If I even hear a bit of it on the radio or whatever it will keep popping up in my head for days. I don't give a damn about actual sailing btw.
Music is a weird thing, mate, and its power shouldn't be underestimated. I'm glad it worked well for you!
This song saved me during the Covid lockdown
When he picks up the guitar and starts playing and singing it, it's like magic.
Yes.
His voice is so soothing
It's not like magic.
@@billmitchell2080 You're right. It IS magic.
Small Goose-Bumps
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Christopher f’ing Cross! Rick Beato knows how to interview and get the best out of these musicians.
My band played a private show in Austin Texas (where he lives and where I live). It was a home show and he is good friends with the lead singer in my band, Gary Dorsey, who does graphic and branding work for Christopher. The room was filled with just under fifteen people, maybe less, and here he walks in. We played six songs and went to mingle with the crowd afterwards. He came up and complimented our harmony, was gracious and kind, and never mentioned his own work. Here was this guy, a music legend, and you would have never known it. Truly a down to earth, normal guy.
He is so down to earth and humble, nice man.
Christopher had Covid 19 and then had Guillain-Barré syndrome. It affected his legs, speech, and memory. I read where he had to relearn how to play his guitar! I’ve been privileged to see him in 2022 and 2023 in concert in Lubbock Texas and he killed it at both shows! He’s a monster guitarist and his singing is superb! It was an honor to watch him perform and what an inspiration he is! Both shows were stellar! Bravo sir! 👏🏻🎸
I saw him in 2022 in NYC. He was great, though we could tell he was tired.
Covid changed my voice, memory, balance, nervous system etc. Everything became more difficult and I have aches and pains all over and my ears ring. I believe it`s a bioweapon.
@@baneverything5580It may be, or it may be the result of irresponsible people then trying to cover up their actions.
I am sorry you have to deal with this. Please remember: The body gravitates towards wellness. It WANTS to balance towards health. Sometimes that is not possible. But that is its imperative, which I hope you will support through your search for health.
Bless you.
GBS is a side effect of the safe and effective.
When I first heard Sailing I was having dinner at a hotel with my parents in São Paulo, Brazil where we had recently moved to. The intro just had a huge impact on me right away. I quickly asked my folks if I could hear the entire song and they patiently did not say a word through the entire song. After the song ended I just said OMG what a beautiful song. Sailing had a huge impact on me. When I bought the album, I was even more shocked: the entire album was a master piece. Christopher Cross is one of all time music heroes. Thank you!!! 🙏🎵💯🎵👏👏👏👏👏
I'm 42 and I'm a HUGE fan of Chris!! I love how he is wearing a Steely Tshirt!!❤❤
Rafferty!
I wish all of these artists would play through one entire song each interview. I was really left painfully wanting to hear him play the whole thing.
He would get a takedown notice from his record label.
His voice still sounds fantastic. It’s hard to believe it’s 40-something years since his early hits. His voice still sounds great.
how does he sound that dang good just sitting there with an acoustic? that was absolutely incredible!!
raw talent 🙃
That was incredible
An absolutely phenomenal song. It's the epitome of serenity and soothing.
There’s great music. Then there’s great songs. Sailing, in my opinion, is one of the best songs ever written and recorded.
AGREE 100%.🙂🇬🇧👍🏼
Everytime , as a musician , I hear Christopher cross sailing I automatically pan straight back to my 80's. Well done guys freaking highly fantastic
One of the very best popsongs ever imo. Once the song starts I get in such a relaxed state, knowing the next couple of minutes are going to be absolutely magical.
It’s fantastic to hear Chris speak so warmly and humbly about his work and the artists and musicians he’s worked with. His songs had a huge impact on me. As a British teenager punk did nothing for me(as he said about punk at 10:44)but his beautiful songs and the arrangements spoke to me viscerally, to my heart and soul, in the same way Bach and 16th Century Polyphony did and still does.
I listened to this beautiful song while catamaran sailing off the coast of Belize and picnicking on small islands in the clear blue waters with a few billowing white clouds overhead. That was in 2014. I lived in paradise for an entire year. Great memories now at 76! You gotta do it at least once before your memory and body decides to revolt on you!
I was fishing on a lake covered in huge mossy cypress trees listening to a cassette boombox the 1st time I heard it on the radio. That`s the scene that replays in my head when I hear it.
ahhhh Drake's channel on a beam reach in the prevailing winds....heaven. An albino dolphin anchored off a caye...
Loved hearing the backstory on this song! So happy he's still out there sharing his music with us! ❤
One of the nicest, humblest musician I have ever met.
Music has a magic to it that when you hear a song that you love. It brings you back to moments in your life.
Sailing by christopher cross is a song my father used to play when we would drive to florida to see my grandparents. I hear the strings in the beginning and im right back to the back seat of my fathers car. Driving down and seeing the landscape change of the east coast. My parents are still together and my grandparents are still alive. Such a wave of emotions hit me when i hear it. And ill never stop. Thank you Chris and rick for this. Peace and love to all
Thank God this chain of events happened. We are all blessed that these things occurred.
Christopher describes writing Sailing as one big Giant Mystical Vomit, with so many little incidents along the way, l say the Universe had a major part of putting this Mystical Magical Song together. First time l heard Sailing all those years ago l got Goose Bumps and a feeling of contentment right down to the core of my soul and to this day whenever l hear “SAILING” it just transports me back in time and to that very moment ……
This is a timeless piece of art
Sailing is one of my all-time favorite songs. It's simply beautiful -- such a vibe!!
Chris is a brilliant songwriter. Definitely underrated.
When he started playing sailing that was heaven sent. Timeless, beautiful song.
If he only knew how how many people's love song that song was to so many. Mine included. Just takes me back to that moment in time that will stay with me forever❤
I love to hear these stories of studio “mistakes” and creative ideas. I wish we had this creative studio work now.
This is literally the first song I can ever remember hearing and thinking, “that’s really good”. Ride Like the Wind blew my mind. I was probably 4 or 5. My Mom had 4 cassette tapes which were allowed to be played in the cassette deck of her ‘78 Celica GT: Christopher Cross, Eagles Greatest hits, Billy Joel “Piano Man’” and Bette Midler “The Rose”. I went on to make a decent living as a professional musician; so thank you for informing my musical tastes from an early age, Chris.
Years ago, I played sailing, always going to the beach with my 6 kids, all summer long.
Now, as my kids are now adults, they play sailing as they drive to the beach and back home.
OH MAH GAWD !!! When he picks up the guitar and sings Sailing ... good holy ish ! Chills. Magnificent.
Several years back I was hired to create mockups of Chris Walden's string arrangements for Christopher's Secret Ladder album. I was so knocked out by CC's writing, singing and playing after more than 30 years since I first heard Sailing. I am a lifelong fan. Great interview.
Three seconds after Chris pick the guitar I was crying of emotion.
One of the most underrated musicians out there!
'Sailing' is on my list of all time favourite songs, and I have played it so often as a way to de-stress and feel calmer. I've loved Christopher Cross's voice and songs for decades. Thank you so much, Christopher, for sharing your wonderful music with us all. :D
This song inspired my whole life...music can do that and what a life it has been.
Im 77 I heard this the summer I was newly widowed and 31. I met a sailor I was a sailor we wanted to go cruising tpgether right away but I had a 7yo daughter and we didnt have the funds so that became the life plan...this song inspired us always. And it was sublime. We were 50 amd 55 when we left US waters. We sailed the Caribbean for years and now I live abroad ....sailing gave me a goal, motivation, dedication, purpose and so many times I hear from people that their dreams didmt live up to their expectations but it certainly DID for us.
Such a humble LEGEND 👍🏼🥲🙏🏻
Unbelieveable how GREAT "Sailing" sounds no matter what setting Christopher Cross is in...
This might just be the most beautiful song ever!
This song is still fresh. riff ahead of its time. could drop today. Christopher looks and sounds great.
Met him at the Iridium a few years ago, and he was one of the nicest folks I've met - especially considering his success, Also, what an amazingly knowledgable musician.
This man is an incredible gift to this world. He has captivated me since I was a teenage girl. His voice, his music, he just speaks to my heart and mind. If there was ever anything on my invisible bucket list, (because I am a rock star in my head), it would be to sing with him. A dream come true. I am just in awe and amazed by Mr Cross. Thank you for sharing this!
I don’t want to sound weird but he’s one of the few artists I would love to shake his hand and tell him thank you.
Michael Omartian’s string parts, that were meant to be buried under the entire instrumentation of the chorus, are so beautiful that when you hear one on its own at the start of a song you drop everything and listen.
Genius.
Sailing is the best best best tune ever in this world. I am a huge fan of Christopher Cross. He brings back great memories of my younger days. Long and joyous life to you Christopher
Neat story on the strings - one of my favorite parts of the entire song. Sailing is one of the most relaxing songs in my collection. Cross is such a humble guy.
This is the genius of Rick Beato; he understands music and he loves musicians. That's how how he has a grammy award winner tell a story about how a legendary intro/mix was an accident 😮😍
I always loved that song and to learn that this was inspired by Joni Mitchell was really news to me. The voicings of Joni's tunes always inspired me. Thank you Rick for making these videos and thanks to Christopher Cross.
leans towards guitar , starts playing, and i get goosebumps right away, what a song and great artist, makes it sound so easy to be great.
Man... what a voice. Beautiful voice; crispy cristaline notes, such an interesting voice tone and a contratenor range. Chris Cross is such an amazingly talented musician.
And, of course, the harmony for Sailing is just so sublime, well done and beautiful chord progressions, tasty.
Released 1979 , I had my Real Estate license one year...this song told me if I make it as a salesman then I could at some point go sail away...45 years later that just might happen this year...did not happen with RE sales...but that time I got from then to now was very special, I was sailing thru life...come what may..
This song and his voice is just enchanting nvr gets old always puts me in a good mood 🙂
Ive had a very rough last few days and this song came to my mind, ive literally had it on repeat for an hour and its put my mind at ease better than any drug ever could... Appreciate Chris
Reminds me of my mother. She loved the ocean and always wanted to go on ferry rides and sit by the ocean. I was like 8 or so. It would come on the radio a lot riding in the car with her. I told her that song was my song to her.
She passed in 2022. It comes on a lot. I know it's heŕ and she's sitting here with me...
I saw Christopher cross last month, and it was magical...
Thank you for sharing this. Your message hit hard . I lost my mom also and she loved the ocean also. While I was at work for the past 2 years I would play this song everyday at work. It drove all the employees crazy . lol I finally go my first sailboat and this is all I really need in life . Nothing more
It’s great hearing the story behind how he came up with the song, which sounds so simplistic, but having played guitar for 30 years, I still found it challenging to learn in more recent times. He’s absolutely right about how that bridge lifts it into a different space.
Christopher Cross!
OMG, thank you so much for interviewing him. I have always loved his music. Now I'm off to the full interview.
Such a pure voice that sounds amazing just sitting across from him...
Wait a minute. He's 72 years old? He looks younger than me. I'm only 55
Well, the canvas can do miracles!
He really does look great for his age! 👍🏾
It’s amazing what not laboring for a living can do for you.

I’m 41 and I only discovered Cristopher last year and been a huge fan ever since. It is quite crazy that I managed to miss out on his stuff for all these years! I’ve been listening to TOTO, Maxus, Steely Dan etc. and still didn’t discover him til 2023. The Joni influence is definitely noticeable in Sailing, but haven’t thought of it til I saw this video. May you live long and tour the globe until you’re at least a 100 years old. You look 50 after all.
WOW...what an amazing conversation...I LOVE Christopher Cross! 💗💗💗
Christopher is at the epicenter of so many great musicians, it just reflects his huge creativity.
Cross is one of those heroes ! Chill Af !! super cool songs
Still listening to sailing in 2024. It's a Great Song.
Gave me goosebumps when he started singing ❤
I always loved fhis song. The DJ playing it at my wedding will forever implant it as a good memory during the best of times. Finally just bought that album on vinyl and it is wonderful!
That is one of the most beautiful melodies and songs ever
Still sounding great and I always loved his guitar style of playing, absolutely perfect.
So awesome! Sailing was and is such a beautiful song. Loved the insight on the song from Christopher.
Great artist. Terrific guy. Classic.
These interviews are pure gold!
I can listen to it for hours.
Years ago i let my young daughters back then listen to Love Is Love during a hot summer and they immediately started to dance.
We repeated it over and over again.
Such a lovely memory!
Thank you Mr. Cross.
He looks amazing, and his singing voice sounds just like it did forty years ago.
LOVE!!!!!! WE ALL NEED TO LOVE EACH OTHER AND STOP HATING!!!!THEY WANT TO DIVIDE US.EVIL WILL NOT WIN!!!!LOVE AND LIGHT CONQUERS EVERYTHING!!!!!BEAUTIFUL SONG!!!!FROM A TIME WHEN EVERYTHING WAS SO MUCH BETTER!!!!! I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!❤❤❤🇬🇧🇺🇸🙏🙏
LOL

This song brings tears to me every time it’s reminded me of someone that meant the world to me I will take this memory to my grave 😢
Such a beautiful song. So calming
When he picked up that guitar and started playing I got instant goosebumps, I was moved, wow!
what an absolute genius, Both of these two great talents. so cool to hear the background of this song.
Nice touch that Rick put a little reverb and compression on in post. Beautiful.
I love this song. It's in my top 3 of all time. Amazing!
A great song can be stripped down to a voice and a guitar and i 7:42 t's still full impact. Add the strings (AN ACCIDENT!) and OMG! Sublime!
The greatest song song ever , no other song takes me on a journey, it transforms my mood instantly, I am floating on the water ❤❤
Christopher! I am inspired by your enthusiasm and gifts. Thank you
I saw him 5 years ago, on the 40th anniversary of this album, and he still sounded exactly like the album. How did a 70yo man still have the voice of a 12yo choir boy? Amazing!
Some songs are just divinely inspired...this one happens to be one of them. The way it just came out of him in one moment and then the way the beginning arrangement just kinda fell on their lap by "mistake" ... Some would say "THat's not odd, that's God." Every time I listen to that song it takes me off to another place and brings a welling up to my soul. There are very few songs that can do that to me.
Awesome interview. Sailing is a beautiful song, it’s so iconic.
Great segment! Christopher Cross is truly a musical treasure.
Both of these guys are legendary
I went to one of his shows in the 80s and it was outstanding the set was great the musicians were great just a fantastic show and ride like the wind was his encore and his guitar playing was just amazing
Saw him in 85, great performance. Jake Gyllenhaal aged mighty quick as some of us do.
My Dad used to listen to this album all the time growing up. Being a drummer and hearing a lot of the music session players did from that era, I always assumed that Steve Gadd and Jeff Porcaro pulled drumming duties on that album. When I moved out, I bought my own copy and, to my surprise, find that it was Tommy Taylor (Eric Johnson "Cliffs of Dover" drummer) who played on the entire album. One of my all time favorite drum albums because he makes every song feel so good. Some really tasty drum tracks on there. Kudos, Tommy!
Goosebumps
Christopher is amazing. Great interview Rick!!!
smoothest song ever written
Saw Chris in Lexington, mass. This summer he was fantastic ❤
Absolutely awesome! Arthur's Theme is still one of my favorites as well!
CC is one of my best musician since I was a kid. Keep going buddy. Thank you for sharing your gift to the world. God bless you more.
One of my all time favorite musician
Genius. Need more of him.
My wife and I love the song "Sailing". Please come to Vancouver to do some shows.
I'm not normally into this sort of softer music but his voice and melody are fantastic .
