Buck 110 is a fantastic hammer. Also has an integrated knife blade.
This guys is a great product manager, marketing pro. Smart, knowledgeable, great communicator.
I have got 6 fix blades and about 40 folders. I spend about 50 weekends outdoors every year in the last couple of years but you know I still love my folders more! I can use them anyday and everywhere. I have got a nice full size Husqvarna forest axe so many times I just need a good solid folder as a cutting tool.
The RAT 1 has a nice 90 degree spine. It's good for striking a foreceriem rod. Doesn't hurt to have another fire starting option. Nice video, thanks for the content
I have the ranger grip 79 and its a fantastic piece of kit for camping and basic tasks around the campsite or for food prep. Many times i just bring that as my main blade/saw. If im on a "bushcraft trip" however I do bring a larger saw and a fixed blade with the RG79 as backup
Whenever I go outdoors I bring my SAK old Dutch Army model with alox scales as a last resort knife/tool.
If I could not bring a fixed blade and had my pick I would go for the Battle Horse Knives model Tree Frog but I don't have one. Another very nice one is the EKA Swede 82. The EKA is stainless so might be better in wet conditions. If it's really wet all the time (like rafting) change to the EKA Swede 92. Same knife but with 'rubber' handle instead of wooden handle.
Love my lightweight Spyderco Manix2. It locks, prepares food very well, has a plain blade, and has great steel that stays sharp.
Great video as usual Dave! For me, I would never go out without taking a multi-use folder with me, irrespective of what other tools I might have. The SAK mentioned above is close to the perfect camp knife, and would be the benchmark for me. If one reads Felix Imller's books one cannot but be impressed by what can be achieved with ONLY this knife in camp.

My favourite all time pocket knives are the Buck 110 which I've owned since about 1975, and a RAT-1
Another excellent video by a man who looks like a middle age English bowman. Quite intimidating (especially with all those sharp blades around) but then again a competent knives salesman. And I'm still in love with Benchmade.

Great vid DCA, as always because you are the man. The calm, friendly, polite voice of the knife community. Thanks for kicking it off with the 110. Personally, I bought a bunch of modern knives and went back to a Buck 112, carried in my back pocket like when I was a teenager. I have tried many moderns at 10 times the price but none fit my hand better then the 112. Feels no solid with the weight and comfortable for the thumb in it's width. And I can sharpen it to razor sharp with my Lansky. For those that use their knife in many scenarios, the 112 is pure genius.

Ganzo 720 lionsteel copy. Made it a scandi edge and been using it for 6 years now. Not the best but cheap and works. Tramontina 14 inch bolo Wilson grip wrap and reprofiled also. All I need. Total 32 bucks for both.
The ultimate hunter by far was the best hard use knife on your list. The axis lock is a fun fidget but not strong enough for hard use and the liner or frame locks are a no go for me in hard use.
I found rat 1 to be most useful. Food prep, fish cleaning and wood carving.
I carry a buck folding knife with a pocket clip. I sharpen it with a file so I have a new edge with a burr curling to the left. (from the top) so my knife has a saw like edge.
My knives do not last very long as I take a lot of metal off with each filing. 🤠
I like soft steel so it files easily being able to change the angle of the edge is a must for me.
I do not take care of my knife if it fails I get another one.
The Gerber Gator folding drop point (154CM, mid lockback) knife has an excellent large rubberized handle. Add a little thumb stud for easy opening. The full flat ground blade will work well on wood or food. Especially if you put a small convex on the last 2-3 millimeters.
Of course, I also have the CS Finn Wolf (red), BM Freek, Rat1 D2, Camillus Beast and a BM North Fork (g10). Hard to choose.
But for prolonged carving, the Gator DP would be significantly more comfortable.
My vote is a native 5 in LC200N. Especially as a companion to a fixed blade.
These are excellent knives.
*In order of preference:*
1) Victorinox Trekker with traditional blade
2) Victorinox Hiker
My Setup is a bit Different :D
Urban: spyderco para 2 (cpms30v) and barkriver donny brooks (cpm154v) (sometimes leatherman charge plus Forest camo)
Woods: fällkniven modern bowie (lam. CoS) and barkriver gunny scandi (cpm3v)
This subject could do with a review - some great woods-worthy folders have come to market in the past couple of years.
A very well thoughtout selection of a campers' knives. I have already chosen the SAK Rangergrip 78, and as backup the Leatherman Signal. I put a mini screwdriver into Ranger's corkscrew, and a FireFly mini ferro rod in the toothpick slot. Since I'm only going car camping this time...I feel completely covered for any situation, but if I was going interior camping, then I would carry a fixed blade (I have Randal bought at their "store" in Florida, almost too nice!).
Just as a FYI :- I always carry a Silky saw and a SMALL hatchet by Gerber. If things might get tough...I could always add to this as long as it is canoe camping, not backpacking (because of the weight).

I've got the Rat-1 in AUS8 and it's a great knife. But mostly I carry my Buck 110. It's a legend! :-)
Rat 1 is available in D2 steel.
My rat 1 served me for years in hard use construction labor i jus bought the d2 i grab it over my zt all the time
That tops knife was a great looking knife.
HANDS DOWN... Spyderco Chef!!! Does everything from culinary to trimming fishing line.
Or buy a Ganzo folder D2 Steel for $15-30 and they have some awesome new designs of their own finally.
I’m just wary about buying stuff from AliExpress because if your stuff doesn’t arrive you’ve got no way of getting it back.
I don't think anyone has made a better folding knife for hunting/camping than the Buck 110/112 I personally like the 112 better but either one is far better than anything else I've seen on the market.
Ive always found bucks hard to get sharp, and if you do, the edge rention is absolutely atrocious. Ive thrown and gave away so many Bucks over the last 30 years, i kinda regret it now. I could've sold them to get another actual good knife.
Edited to add that i do miss my buck 105. It cut like crap, but it summed up the mid 20th century rural America in a way few other knives could. My grandpas last deer was skinned with that knife. My uncle stole it from me years after Grandpa died

Excellent presentation. I would have no argument on any of your selections and the reasoning behind them. They will all serve well for their intended tasks.
My companions everyday for the last 7 years has been my ZT 301st folder along with my Victorinox Swiss Spirit X multi tool. They are with me always at work, play, errands, and outdoors. After nearly 40 years of carrying all manner of knives they have stood the longest.
Fixed blade I take for camping is Ka-Bar1211 is best knife I have!!!

Spyderco Para3 is best edc folding knife I use everyday outdoor for camping too!!!
I have the 110 and the victorinox. The Buck wins hands down.
I edc the 110 but I do most of my work on the farm so not really and urban edc but I still take it to town as a replacement for a fixed blade

I have one in S35V. We used it to quarter an elk and a mule deer in Colorado in November. It was still really sharp afterwards. It’s a tank of a pocket knife

I liked the test that Dutch Bushcraft Knives did!!! The cold steel sr1 was top dog in the test and they even battonned and threw it!!! Cold Steel's president Lynn Thompson has said the sr1 was meant to be able to fill the role that your fixed blade would in the event you couldn't have one!!!
Can you guys do a similar comparison of “ultralight” backpacking blades? 2.5 ounces or less? Currently I carry an orange Spyderco Delica for lightweight backpacking or sometimes a Leatherman Skeletool KB. I’d love to do a Spyderco Native 5 in LC200N because I can rust VG10 in 3 days. Looking at the Spyderco Para 3 lightweight too. Victoronox Classic SD is popular among the ultralight crowd but I want more blade than that.
Victorinox trekker with traditional blade shape or victorinox hiker. Then you have 1 to 2 blades, a saw, can opener, screwdrivers, awl, tweezers, toothpick. If you don't want a saw then check out the victorinox tinkerer.

Jacques Nowell I was expecting it. I have the Finn Wolf and it’s an amazing small camp/bushcraft folder. Easy to sharpen, and the Tri-Ad lock gives a little extra confidence in completing tasks. Paired with a good fixed blade, it’s the only folder I take out with me.

I carried a buck type knife camping for years it was a kershaw. But nowadays I carry coldsteel a rahja2 or a voyager xl also carry my spartan a lot. I would never carry a liner lock had two fail one cut me bad at work. Being a mechanic I was really hard on knives so I only carry the best. If you wanna collect knives that’s nice nothing wrong with that but if you really work an use your knife nothing beats coldsteel. A lot of TH-cam is opinions from people that have a knife for pocket jewelry an only open packages. Just giving my opinion with my experience an my experience is vast. If you really use your knife lock backs are the best. Anything else is a risk , not saying the locks don’t work but they can fail. Way before a lock back. It’s your fingers . I’m luck still have mine won’t make that mistake a third time.

The best pocket knife for these purposes is indeed a fixed blade. Second best is a Buck 110. Any variant.
Honestly I just use my PM2 for everything, compression lock is strong (enough) and the s30v doesn't need touching up that often.

Sadly here in the UK folding lock knives are illegal as are fixed blades in most instances …. we can only carry a folding knife with a sub three inch blade …… bummer eh? ...atb Jim
You would have to prove to any police officer that the knife was necessary to what you were doing ie camping. You would have no problem with an axe for wood prep strangely nor a filleting knife if you were fishing and wanted to prepare fish. In most cases the police will be sympathetic but some blade styles would land you in trouble. As a side in Scotland we even need to have a certificate / license before we can buy an air rifle ….. good old UK!! … atb Jim@@nogps1225

What is the difference between these knives and a switchblade?
On switchblades, also called automatic knives, when you press a button in the handle, a spring releases and opens the blade. All of these knives open manually, with no spring-loaded button.
The Cold Steel Finn Wolf makes all of those unnecessary!

The 110 is merely a lighter version of the Schrade Bear Claw which came out first.

Unfortunately, Schrade is made overseas now. I bought a China bear paw about 9 years ago and carried it daily for a couple years. It wasn't bad but it fails in comparison to my Buck 110, which im proud to say is still made in the USA. I did have the privilege to pick up an older USA made Schrade LB7 that is even heavier and thicker than the buck but I don't carry it out of fear of losing it in the woods.

Someone please help me understand the deal with bottle openers being on modern knives and tools...... I can't understand why they're put on anything....and if they are....why they're considered as being "one of the tools". It usually turns me off of knives and multi tools when I see it.
