    I served in the US Army, am a female, and own seven of these knives discussed by DCA, and for an all around great knife, I'd take my Mora Kansbol (I have it in burnt orange) as an all around camping/field/hiking knife (if I'm outside for a few days) because it doesn't weigh much, can be used in a variety of ways (food prep, bushcraft, defensive weapon), and is very sharp. If I was outside for just a day, I'd take something small like one of my medium to large sized Victorinox multitools (of various sizes) I bought five Victorinox Farmers for my family members for Xmas because of its hardiness and thick knife stock. Thanks to DCAs persuasive video presentations, I now own over 100 fixed and folding knives. His videos are my new crack! :)

      @@WhstlblwrBlastingEpsteinsILK I own the QSP Neckmuk too. It has a very skinny handle and didn't pass the paper cutting test. Its good to spread cheese on crackers and its light to carry. The Revo Ness is a better nessmuck imho but costs over $50 and are really only good for food prep.

    DCA, please have the web developers make a filter on the site that will allow selection of washers versus ball bearings. We have filters for blade shape, steel, handle material. This is missing and I would love the ability to just scan the washer pivot folders.

    • @RagnarokCo
      @RagnarokCo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would say almost everything would be nice. Sort by blade coating, weight, handle material, just about anything you can have a data point for.

    • @InsipidChicken

      LMAO 🤣 Please tell us what other websites have a filter for bearings & washers 🤣

    • @jamesadowney
      @jamesadowney 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bearings vs washers is a more...ahem...pivotal issue than the other things. There is already a handle material filter. Opening mechanism can be clearly seen in photos. Pivot spacer/mechanism is not something visually apparent and does change the application.

    • @InsipidChicken
      @InsipidChicken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The point of filters, for me, is to avoid having to visually sift through literally hundreds of photos when all I’m looking for is a price range and a flipper tab

    Speaking as a French viewer, wine is a commodity in many part of the word (not just France) and in many places most bottle even the cheapest one got corks. Overall I would say that the corkscrew can be as valuable as a bottle opener in many european countries. I've already seen many people (myself included) taking a Swiss knife on a trip just to have a corkscrew with them

    I have a Victorinox Evo S-17 and it has most of the same tools, but the big advantage is a locking main blade. Saw, bottle opener/flathead, can opener, awl, corkscrew, file. Doesn't have scissors, but it's also about $45 and that locking blade makes it a real contender.

    • @jamesc7277
      @jamesc7277 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Victorinox Evogrip (or Evolution) s17 DOES have scissors. It is, essentially the Huntsman, Wenger model - with a locking main blade. Same tool set, except no pen blade - a nailfile instead.

  • @jn651
    @jn651 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I love when I see these videos are at least 30 minutes! The SAK corkscrew *has* opened wine a couple times, but it's opened an order of magnitude more knots. I still have my original SAK from when I was 7; it has a stylized tipi on the side and says 'CAMPING' next to that. I had a black one, but lost it on a ride at a county fair. I recently bought a new one, but did opt for the Hunter because I had always been covetous of the scissors. Not regretting that, even though the scussors aren't super tough. Always enjoy your programs! Thanks, y'all!

    I live in Switzerland and I open LOTS of wine bottles with my Tourist SAK. ;-). But for outdoors I prefer the Hiker. It has a saw but it drops the scissors and package hook, both of which just add weight and thickness. It also has a Phillips driver in place of the corkscrew.

    The Cold Steel sr1 lite needs to be on this list. It's not under $50 on your website but it is everywhere else. The 4 Max scout is also really impressive for about $80. On a side note, those Schrade 1095 fixed blades are a bargain and are great outdoor knives to beat on.

      @monkeylovemagic3339 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love the Mora 2000 and IMO it's better than kansbol. Mirror finish blade helps with slicing, I don't need the sharpened spine and prefer rounded for comfort, and the handle is so ergonomic comfortable. It's the best light camp/hiking knife I've found. Great for food prep with tapered tip. I wouldn't recommend a scandi grind as a main blade for a survival situation as the edge is so thin, but in experienced hands would work.

  • @The4cp

    Schrade had the best budget outdoor knife in Chris Tanner's Jess X. Then the ruined the design by switching the grind from saber to hollow and the steel from perfectly heat treated 1075 to Schrade junk steel. ALL WITHOUT HIS CONSENT !Tanner was livid! It almost destroyed his reputation as a knife designer. The perfect indestructible $70 knife now no longer exists.

    I have said in person and online SO many times that the Becker folder simply needed a steel upgrade and it would be great. The fact that it got D2 (to me) was an instant sell. I ordered it the second I got the email from KnifeCenter that it even existed... To me it's probably THE most frustrating thing about KA-BAR. They rely so much on their history of their fixed blade fighting knives, not just for sales but also as this, "an American tradition" idea... Yet they ignore SO many of their other products like their entire folding knife line. I am convinced that if they made a good, sturdy, American made folding knife with better steel than AUS8... say S30V, used better scales than basic plastic and charged $100 for it, people would pay for it... Not to mention that a lot of their knives are produced outside of America, so it's weird that they focus heavily on this idea that buying a KA-BAR is an "American tradition".

    I believe the Schrade Frontier series knives that are most commonly in the hard use videos back when they were well regarded were saber ground. BTI tools bought out Taylor Brands (which had, in turn, bought the rights to the Schrade name when the real Schrade, in New York, closed its doors) and, for some senseless reason, started doing hollow grinds on what were originally designed as hard use knives. That is why most of the positive reviews of the Frontier series on TH-cam are several years old - because they aren't as well regarded since Taylor Brands was bought out.

    I have the huntsman, and with the fire ant addition, your pocket knife is a fully capable outdoors knife. Having said that, I think it should be paired with a fixed blade. Let’s face it, if you’re into knives, you ain’t taken just one knife into the woods. Hell, we bring 3 just going to get gas.

    The QSP Neckmuck would've been a great knife if they just got rid of that stupid duck bill at the end and just created a finger groove. The duck bill wedges your pinky away from the rest of your fingers causing real discomfort and I have larger than average hands. It feels like making a fist with a fat marker wedged between your pinky and ring finger. That stupid feature serves no purpose other than to make the ergonomics very weird and adds weight to the knife.

    I love my Huntsman. But if you want a metal file and a couple more back tools, bump up to the Ranger, if you can fit a 5 layer knife in your pocket. Otherwise, Huntsman. File or grind the wire stripping notch square & sharp so it actually strips wire, then carefully sharpen the inside edge on the can opener so it makes a package opening tool. Keep mini screwdriver in the corkscrew and always have a straight pin in that hole in the scale under the corkscrew.

    For me, the bottom line is, unless there is some legal restriction which would make it impossible, if you can only have one knife for camping or survival, then it should be a sturdy, basic, inexpensive stainless fixed blade knife, with a blade no more than about 4.5" long, and a good field-expedient sharpening system. A knife in the field is only as good as you can keep it sharp.
    If you can only have a non-locking folding knife, then a Victorinox Farmer X, which is a little more than $50, but has just about everything one could possibly want in an outdoors knife of that type, and is definitely worth the extra expense. If you can afford to add it, in either case, also get yourself a Victorinox Rambler. The tiny tools of the Rambler are more useful that most people realise, and will help preserve the edge of your main blade.
    Although I own many of them, I honestly don't really think a locking folding knife is much of an improvement over a Swiss Army knife. Yes, the lock does provide safety against accidental or inadvertent closure, but the truth is, locks are not meant to withstand work pressure, and a locking blade should never be treated as a fixed blade knife. It's best to consider a locking blade as if it has no lock, and if you are going to do that anyway, there's no reason you can't do what many generations have done before you and use a slip-joint Swiss Army knife.

      So… which fixed blade knife are you pointing us to? Sturdy, basic and stainless as well as inexpensive? 4.5” and I’m hoping with a comfortable handle. Give us a clue?

    The best knife in this lineup is the Cold Steel Finn Wolf! This is a great bushcraft knife, it has a 90 degree spine to strike a Ferro rod, it makes awesome feather sticks. I have even skinned, and gutted elk with this knife. It is a great knife, go get yourself one, and get outside!!!

    I wish the Ontario rat 1 didn’t have nylon washers. I’ve beat the snot out of mine as a daily user on the construction site and the washers went out on me. Now the blade has tons of play and if I tighten it down the blade doesn’t open or close

      Do you think it would be fine to use in a kitchen daily to chop veg? I'd like one good knife good for everything - even fire-starting (can I use the back of the Schrade knife? I know it comes with a tiny ferro rod, but I might buy a 5" one since my fingers get stiff and numb when cold

    I don't understand why Schrade always goes with a hollow grind. They must think they're Buck. Surely they need to try to baton their hollow grinds and watch as the blade chips out

    Regularly carry a CS Finn Wolf as my hiking/camping folder - only AUS8 but it works hard and comes back for more. Low cost means I won't cry if lost. Also often carry a RAT1 for same reasons but not as good with wood/fire. I almost always carry an Opinel stainless as my food prep knife - ultralight & great slicer. Depending on situation for fixed I regularly carry a Mora Companion (Kansbol excellent alternative) - light, reliable, proven design. Again is cheap so I won't cry if lost. The other fixed blades I carry exceed $50 so they're out. Thanks DCA you've done it again! Informative vid.

    I have the SAK huntsman and a budget tactical folder in the GHB at work, an Ontario R2D2 in the car kit (and a Leatherman skeletool) and the Mora Companion in each of my BOBs. Couple of cheaper Spidies in my movable kits (Maxpedition pouches) and I EDC the Elementum. Now I just need all the pother options in this video and I’ll be all set. (no that’s not all my knives, just the “prepping” ones)

    This is awesome, couple weeks ago I bought the QSP neckmuk as a companion knife for the more finesse jobs my strongarm isn’t best for like good prep. Added loop attachment hardware to where I can carry it on my belt as my EDC, or on the outside of my boot for the woods. Also really concealable as a boot knife.😁 didn’t know the knife was on any lists as I stumbled upon it online
