    I am so glad I found you! I absolutely love the way that you teach you are very clear and you also explain why as opposed to just teaching how! I really like how you broke everything down and made it understandable for a beginner but also allowing somebody more advanced to play with the recipe. Plus that buff bar looks amazing and I think you have the best recipe idea out there from what I can find at least for what I’m looking for.

      karen thorne Thank You. I've been testing for a while and even found in summer it was great. I didn't get that sticky feeling you get when putting on moisturise on a hot day after being out in our harsh summer weather. Something about using it in the shower I think. Your wrap meat, when I wrap round bars they look messy. I have to lay the coffee filter in a PVC pipe cap then I drop the soap in, the cap holds the sides right and then you fold the top and tape it . The creases are straight and flat otherwise mine look bulky

    Hi. I love the way you explain why you choose certain ingredients in your recipes. What was the name of your preservative? I have never heard that name before. Not sure if we have that here in Canada. The exfoliants you used, did you do 11% each? Keep up the good work. Just love your videos.

    • @SoyandShea
      @SoyandShea  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. The preservative I choose to use is Nipaguard. There are two - SCE for water base and SCV for oil based. The total weight of my exfoliants are 33% of the recipe and you can split that anyway - I use more almond and less of the beans as my customers prefer soft scrubs but you could always do more coffee and less almond meal - there is no right or wrong 😊

    I made these, I was shocked at how quickly they melted. These couldn't possibly last very long. What could I of done wrong? I followed your directions/recipe and while I loved the feeling afterwards it just pretty much melted down the shower! Maybe more beeswax?

    • @SoyandShea
      @SoyandShea  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on what hard oils you use and how hot you shower. My recipe is only a guideline and you need to work out what works best for your area. Each hard oil will have a different melting temperature - Coconut oil is very soft so I would avoid that and Cocoa butter is one of the hardest so I use the most of that. Adding more beeswax will help to harden but you don't want to add to much.
      If you have a very hot shower, the warmth from the water will melt the oils if you keep the bar under the water. I usually step out of the water and use then go back under to rinse off. I have found this to be the same when I have tried similar bars from other people.
      I am working on another version of this that is more suitable to hotter climates. I only sell this product in my winter months.

    • @OZARKMEL
      @OZARKMEL 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SoyandShea Thank you so much for the reply. I used cocoa butter, shea butter and coconut oil. Clearly to soft. I will remake these with more cocoa butter and see if that makes a difference here in Missouri, USA. I can see where shipping these anywhere in the Summer would NOT be a good idea! LOL.....I was loving my skin after using it though, felt like velvet.
      Again, thank you!

    Awesome! Again, you are such an inspiration and your videos are always extremely informative. Question, have you used ground orange peel? Should I worry about it going bad even though I will use a preservative?

    • @SoyandShea
      @SoyandShea  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. I personally have not used ground orange peel but I do have some. I found it too scratchy for my liking. When I use foods in my products, I make sure I use closer to the maximum usage rate of the preservative for the application its intended for. My preferred preservative allows for 0.5% - 1.5% so in this recipe that does not include water but comes in contact with water, I use 1%. If my recipe had water included, I would increase to 1.5% to be on the safe side. If there were no food items, I would only use 0.5%. As I am always concerned about bacteria etc, I test my products by putting them through extreme conditions like leaving them in a sunny spot for a couple of months to see what happens. I also make sure that any food items used in my products are dry - I don't use wet coffee grounds.

    I just happened upon this video and I really like it. Thanks for this! I've only done bars of soap and a facial bar, nothing else. Is there a book or something you might recommend for making this and other products that I might read to learn more about this? I've never used any preservatives and I want to expand both my knowledge and products I love the way you show how you make them. Many people aren't as great explaining like you do. Now I must watch more of your past video's to see the neat things I've missed! Hugz, Tree
    PS May I ask the directions on how to use a bar like this? I've never tried one. LOL!

      Hi Tree, I got a book from a place called Aussie Soap supplies. Unfortunately they don't ship overseas but the do have a lot of good information on their website under the recipe formulary. They work in conjunction with Brambleberry who also has great articles on Soap Queen.
      To use this bar, I keep mine in the shower, I just rub the bar over wet skin and rinse off. You will feel some of the oil left on your skin but this will sink into your skin and keep you moisturised for the day

      Thank you 🧡 that I something I am hoping to have a go at this year. I think it will mean the butters and oils will emulsify on contact with water making it a great in-store lotion. Not sure at this stage how it would affect the hardness. If you were looking to remove based on it being an animal product I would maybe put a little Carnauba wax to keep the firmness.

    Hey there so I made this bar and was so excited to try it that I hardly gave it 40 minutes to set in the freezer.
    I followed your recipe and used only cocoa butter and no other butter.
    When I used it in the shower, the exfoliants were just melting and falling off. Is that how it’s supposed to be ? Because when you used it on your hand in the video I didn’t see the exfoliants coming off on your skin. Is it because I didn’t allow it to harden up for longer ? Or should I reduced the exfoliants ?
    But my skin feels soooooo amazing !! 😍 thank you !!

    • @SoyandShea
      @SoyandShea  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The exfoliants will come away as you use it. It really depends on how hot you like your water to how quickly it melts. The hotter the water, the quicker it will melt. They also work best if you let them harden a little longer 😁

So greasy in fact that the coffee portion I used as the exfoliant was a little hard to get off my skin. Once I dried off the towel helped with alot ot the oily feel and my skin does feel amazing. I was however wondering what the inclusion of an ewax might do. I know there is no water in the receipe but since its introduced to water in the shower would that help at all with the greasy feeling? Thank you for sharing all you wondering products, you are very inspiring.

      Thank you for trying the recipe and your feedback. The feel is going to be very dependent on your choice of oils and butters as some are greasier than others. As it is a solid Body Butter, you will have a think film of oils on your skin as you would when applying a Body Butter and it should sink into the skin. I use a very high percentage of Cocoa Butter as I find it less greasy than other butters. It could just be the oils need tweaking to get that perfect combination. This year I am going to try adding E-wax into the recipe. If should really turn it into a in-shower lotion bar by doing this but it is finding the right amount to ensure the oils emulsify when in contact with the shower water.

      @@SoyandShea thank you so much. After sending in my comment I thought I probably used too much shea butter and not enough coco butter. Those were the only 2 butters I used and no hard oils. I'll tweak it a bit and try again!!! Thank you for your response! 😁

      @@tinawagner9489 yes the Shea would be quite greasy and would make it quite soft too. I use about twice the amount of cocoa butter to Shea. Try making a small 100g one and let me know how you go 😁

      I wonder if adding kaolin clay and/or fine colloidal oatmeal to the oils would cut down on greasiness. Also I know that the addition of arrowroot powder to my body butters diminishes the greasiness a lot so maybe try that too?

    How do I calculate the percentage if I don’t know how much the total is on the receipt? I hope I said that correct. Exp:60 % of what?

    • @SoyandShea

      The total is whatever batch size you want to make.

    Hi. Y do u use preservative if no water content in this ??

    • @SoyandShea
      @SoyandShea  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use preservative as these will sit in the shower and be in contact with water.

    So does your adzuki beans fully grind up because I cannot get mine to fully grind all the way

    • @SoyandShea

      I used black beans in mine. I just chopped them roughly. Unless you have a commercial grinder I don't think they'll grind to powder. I do also have a second video on this with an updated recipe

      @@SoyandShea thanks I realized what I did wrong to mess them up I got them ground a bit more I use the ninja machine to grind my stuff I put the almond meal already in it so I had to remove the almond meal ie make another batch then grind with just coffee beans and beans also now I have this extra mixture of coffee beans almond meal and adzuki beans.. any thought on what I could do with it as it won't grind more..?? Maybe a garnish once the soap has hardened up a bit I could stick some on top like and embed embellishment?

      @@brokebaeonaBUDGET you could make two varieties - mild and rougher one. Personally I like a mild scrub but others like something a little rougher. As long as the beans don't have sharp edges, you can still use.

    Can clays be used or not for this bar type

    • @SoyandShea
      @SoyandShea  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see why not but definitely do a test batch. I would replace some of the exfoliant for the clay and make sure it is preserved well as the Clay will absorb water and moisture on the air.

    Another great video. I really like oats in my products. Do you think sugar and colloidal oatmeal as the exfoliants would work well with other fragrances? Could do a coffee one as well with oatmeal. Could you advise where you buy your coffee filters please. Thanks Debbie from W. Australia.

    • @SoyandShea
      @SoyandShea  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My immediate thought as I read your question was Oatmeal Milk and Honey or or Aussie Soap has one called Almond Biscotti that would complement Sugar and Oatmeal. My Aunt gave me these filters but I believe she got them on Amazon. You can also try Ebay - look for basket coffee filters ❤

    you dont need chemical preservatives because you are using natural oils and butters.

    • @SoyandShea
      @SoyandShea  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because this is designed to be left in the shower and has raw nut powder and coffee, I feel it is best to include a preservative to prevent bacteria growing but the choice is up to individuals. The preservative system I use is designed for products which have "natural" claims.
