Alan talks us through Revival's restoration of the incredibly rare BMW R68, the bike that set a design lineage that's prevalent today in BMW Motorrad's newly released R18, nearly seventy year's later. A one year only model, there were only eleven hundred made, and was BMW's first 100mph bike.

Great video about a great bike. Bmw excels in its "understated elegance" designs.
A garden variety R100 is in my collection. The R100's were so ubiquitous they have all too frequently been relegated to behind-the-garage status. Mine was in basic rider condition when I acquired 10 years ago, but over the years I've slowly brought its condition up to high-rider condition. I've always loved the look of this bike, but with 6 other makes in the garage, I find it gives the least riding pleasure, for reasons I can't articulate. As I write this from my desk, the R100 now sits in my office just 6 feet away, always in my vision and always catching my attention. I had no idea I would derive such pleasure just looking at this beauty every single day. It now enjoys the museum status it deserves.
Sometimes you don't have to ride 'em to enjoy 'em. In the meantime, there's actual ride time available on the Norton, CBX, Ariel Square 4, or Indian.

Love this style and yes this BMW are running great we just finish a R25 (from 1954) the small version of the R68 and what also is great, is that the engine is very simple and easy to repaire you can do it on the side of the road ;-)

I just had a good laugh when you mentioned the brakes compared to the Vincent. Back in the 80s I owned a R67/2. Less HP than a R68 but good torque. The brakes were excellent, especially because I had a late model with full width hubs. I'd say the twin leading full width brakes of those BMWs are as good as it gets. Never had any problems with them. In the 2000s I drove the succeeding Earles-Model R60 (1957, same brakes) with a Steib S350 and there was no necessity for an additional sidecar-brake as the the Duplex of the R60 did an excellent job. In comparison to that BMW brake perfomance I was almost shocked by the bad perfomance of the vincent brakes. I already decided to go for a 2LS-aftermarket brake for my Rapide, it will be the one from the netherlands by vincent speet as for my perception that one resembles the appearance of the original very well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 1953 supposed to have a DUAL front brake drum instead of a single? I saw another man's video of his restored BMW's. He mentioned that in his segment and It was such on his. Were there exceptions on the production line? Cigar-style mufflers definitely original, but also seen fishtails that I don't like as much as the "cigars".

The full width drum came in the following year, 1954. We're not sure about exceptions mid-year.
