  • Today I'm digging into the 2023 iMac with the M3 chip - is it worth it, or should you pass?
ALL MY FAVORITE GEAR IS LISTED BELOW 👇
I bought the new 2023 iMac as someone who passed on the M1 version, and I have to say, I've been surprised by this machine. I wasn't sure if we'd see a new iMac, given we already have the Mac Mini and the Mac Studio, but I think the iMac has it's place in Apple's lineup, but htere are some things you need to consider. In this video, I dive into my first week with the M3 iMac, this is the base model with the 256GB SSD, and 8GB of RAM - let's see how it performs!

Thank you, for posting this very useful review video. Back in the day, I was "all-in" on using Apple's All-in-One desktop systems and owned a 15-inch 5400 with a 603(e) processor, white glossy 20-inch G4 iMac, white glossy 20-inch G5 iMac, and a white glossy 24-inch Intel iMac. However, in 2010, I switched to "mac mini" models and now use as my main desktop a "space gray" trash can size 2014, Mac Pro 8-core/D-700/64 GB/1TB SSD model paired with a 2010, Apple 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display and everything is working great (smile...smile).

Appreciate your comments about the usability of the base model. I'd wager that less than 1% of iMac users are editing 5k video or compiling on Xcode, but those users seem to be the ones leaving many negative reviews. Maybe they're just the most invested in these matters and are also first out of the gate with commentary. Anyway, I appreciate this review!

Thanks! Also seems a lot of folks get tripped up between what system memory does vs the CPU/GPU. It's fine though, the purpose of this was to show off what you can do with a base model and who it's for while also highlighting you have options above it.

Really good remarks. The "cannibalizing" remark makes a lot of sense...and then there''s the "heat" issue. The later 27" iMacs suffered from heat issues, and that required separating the monitor from the computer itself. Thus, we got the Mac Studio.

11/29/23 I am struggling to decide which M3 upgrade I want since my 21" i Mac with Intel chip, looking at a 24" i Mac Pro with 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of memory, a i Mac mini with same specs or an i Mac Studio M2 or M3 with similar specs. A review of these 3 would help me a lot with info on Pros & cons, and pricing in making my upgrade.

This is helpful. I run Photoshop with large files, Lightroom, and I do videos for TH-cam, etc. My 2019 iMac just bit the dust, so I need to replace it. I wish I could get the Mac Studio (Ultra!) but it’s just not in the budget right now. I’ll miss the 27 inch screen I think, but I think the iMac M3 will get me through the next few years and maybe I’ll upgrade to the Mac Studio then if I feel I need it. Your walk through assures me that the M3 should handle my needs. Thanks!

I just switched from my iMac 27'' 2014 to the M3 iMac and the screen feels tiny side by side but the bump in global performance is huge. I always beef up my config to keep them as long as possible and I am a power user so the 24GB RAM was not an option. I did not realize that I had upgraded the HDD myself on my old iMac to 2TB and bought the M3 with only 1TB so I cannot migrate all my files, bummer. It is such a shame that in 2023 there is not even one M2 slot at the back to put a SSD. I wish I could use the old iMac as an external display :(

My Old IMac was a 2008 build and is still running however, as a lot of the old software is not supported, I am slowly starting to learn the processes on this new IMac. I note there is a charging port under the Mouse but please tell me, DOES THE MACHINE HAVE TO BE POWERED UP TO BE ABLE TO CHARGE THE MOUSE OR DOES IT MAKE THE CONNECTION VIA BLUETOOTH. Unfortunately; there is no booklet with the operating instructions. I would vey much appreciate your advice. Many thanks in advance!

Annying how many of the same youtubers who were ecstatic about how they could edit high bitrate 4k video on the macbook air M1 now apparently feel that the M3 is absolutely unusable for "pro" work. Clowns! M3 is more than capable enough for 99% of users. I think the guys who crave 27 inches and M3 Pro/Max on absolutely every and all machines Apple make are lacking in inches somewhere else

Like gaming with what is available, sad that years ago there was a huge amount of games for Macs, even Blizzard has cut us out on Diablo 4 ! There's a "maybe" bigger iMac coming in 2024... Yea, but it really doesn’t save you any money and then you have a bunch of cables and extra power cords to deal with after you’ve added a camera, speakers, microphone and the monitor power cable and data cable. The iMac has one power cord and comes with a lighting cable to charge things with from time to time, so basically there’s just one wire.

Once one has used a 27”, 5K iMac one doesn’t want to downgrade to a 24” display. I don’t understand why the 27” Studio display costs so much, other than Apple is trying to make up the cost of development. If they lowered the price to $1000 USD I think it would become a very popular option.

As someone who has had an iMac since 2008 ( when it was originally 24in ) then got the 2013 model 27in ( right before the 5k came out ) then that one crapped out in 2021 ( got a refurb 2015 27in 5k ) and now got the iMac m3... you get used to the size within an hour. I was holding out for a 27 in also but, thats not happening.
What i did do is, put the resolution with (more space) and it's exactly like the 5k default resolution was.

so comparing the mid range and the cheapest, the only real difference is the 2 extra GB of GPU is this correct? (the extra pots can be solved by adapters and touch id not really essential to me) So unless doing intense 3d rendering works, maybe choose the base model raise the memory to 24g and harddrive to 512g would be enough for a solid machine?

      Key differences:

      - 2 extra GPU cores

Thanks Kyle. what I meant was the ports and ethernet could all be solved by external adapters, the only performance related difference is the 2 GPU cores which -unless you do heavy 3D renders- is pretty much unnoticeable, so just buying the base model and raise the memorie to 24g might be a good idea? do you think so? or the extra 200 for the mid range is worth it? @@KyleErickson

I save many of my programs on iCloud, but I can also add an external SSD if I need more storage for my iMac. The 24-inch screen is a bit smallish for me, but the colors and image quality are great. I can almost guarantee that you'll be able to browse the web just fine on 8 gigs of RAM for another decade unless something changes - you can host most basic websites on server instances with 1GB RAM without any issue. What exactly do you see moving forward so far that these would be rendered obsolete for basic use? The way all modern software works and the way things have historically shifted over the last couple decades is having all the processing done on server, and not on your machine. Maybe that landscape changes, maybe it doesn't, but if you're just using this for basic use I can't see why it wouldn't last.
