I have always loved iMac - they have a place in my heart, so when Apple released the new M3 iMac I just knew I'd have to give it a go.
I’ve used it now for nearly a month - and I have tried to use it more than any of my other Macs so that I could give you an honest and decent review of it.
We check out the audio, the Retina Display, the I/O, the camera…you name it - we take a good look at it.
And with the global decline in desktop sales, I ponder on whether the iMac has a future.
Subscribing, liking and sharing is TRULY appreciated and goes a long way to helping the channel grow 🙏🏻

Not everyone likes to stick things into their ears (i.e. iPod) so having the option of the jack allows use of headphones; and like you say the speakers are really good. Love this video, Happy New Year.

Congratulations, your pitch was tasteful, count me subbed.
My circa 2011” 27” iMac hard drive crashed 2 days ago with my whole life on it; gotta find a genius to rescue the data and transfer to a new machine. Your video reminds me why I’ve enjoyed iMac for so long. Footnote: as an audiophile I needed a (an Apple) device with the jack so I intend to buy have one dedicated for streaming in my sound room as well.
Your style is so tasteful, you’re my only computer channel sub. Excellent my friend.

iMacs strike an emotional chord more than any other Mac - I don't know why, but they just do. Good luck on the data transfer and when you get yor hands on your new iMac check in and lets us know what you ended up with. D👍🏻

@TheJustseb72 Hi, I also have a Mac mini M1 and a generic monitor (a basic FHD Samsung made in 2009-2010). I want to buy a new monitor, for example the Studio Display, but costs a lot for what it offers: with almost the same price I can buy an M3 iMac, with a smaller display but with an entire computer inside, more powerful than my M1. I hope a 16/512GB M3 chip will be enough for my purposes: editing photo, video 4k (sometimes I would like to try to editing in 8k) and, in the future, graphic.

Some of us will be on "desktop" for a long time. Although I have a full-featured phone, some of what I view belongs on a 27-inch screen. And because I run Debian, aluminum imac gets the job done with power to spare.

I couldn't agree with you more - macOS isn't going anywhere for a long time to come yet

  • @davet3530
    @davet3530 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Oh dear, this is really giving me more things to consider. I too love iMac s and have the 27inch version. I love the form factor and this M3 version looks appealing, plus having watched your video, this machine well be ok for my needs. I too use LR and Photoshop quite extensively, working with RAW files from my cameras. The latest iteration of PS says that some aspects of The program won’t work with my OS, (Montana ) which I assume need the newer M chips . I have noticed that some of the newer tools in PS certainly don’t work properly on my machine e.g. Generative fill .
I’m very tempted to go for the IMac M3, but then you raise a very good point in the future of iMacs. I’ve had my machine for six or so years, and looking forwards to maybe getting the same or more years out of it in the future, I now wonder if I should hold off and see about a Mac Mini M3,:or push the boat out and consider one of the current Studio Max machines. But I would also probably go for the Studio display.
I currently do a little bit of video using iMovie, but maybe in the future would like use FCP and some of the 4K footage from my mirrorless cameras. So I have to think future proofing as well. Such a dilemma. Any views David? Thanks

    • @DavidLewisTech
      @DavidLewisTech  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

we sound like we have very similar workflows, Dave.
I did have some issues with PS and exporting for web (which I use all the time for my blogs -medium.com/@Davidtalkingtech - but other than that, I haven't had any issues. That turned out to be an Adobe issue which is now fixed. Now you mention the Mac mini - which I've never owned...I have a strong suspicion that they may well release the M3 Pro Mac mini in January - at least if this year is to be a precedent.
If prices remain unchanged you could get a 16 GB model with 512 GB of storage, 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU for £1399 - add on the Studio Display and you are all in for £2900 - with a really great set-up.
As for the Studio Display - probably the best Apple purchase I've made in the past two years! I've made a few videos about it...th-cam.com/video/3b0jMyYjT1c/w-d-xo.html
If you can wait until January and see what Apple do - that may be a smart move, Dave.
      Thanks for getting in touch.

My family bought the 2015 iMac and I'm still using it right now. Everything from the design, 4K display, software works perfectly. I did have to change the hard drive to an SSD but other than that. When this machine finally calls it a day (hopefully not soon) I would definitely consider getting the Yellow iMac, I just love the aesthetics of it. I still use a windows laptop but nothing beats sitting at a desk with a desktop computer and just focusing on the task at hand.

This is a very good review, and one I'm grateful for. A general question for video editors: Is it better to get an Imac M3 or Macbook Pro with an M3 chip for video editing? How much extra do you pay for portability?

    • @DavidLewisTech
      @DavidLewisTech  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

hi there - well, as you know I switched from a 2015 Intel iMac to the M1 Max MBP and have not regretted it for a moment.
In answer to your question - if you are talking about similarly spec'd MBP or iMac then it all comes down to whether you need that portability. I hate editing video on the 16-inch screen. The 24-inch iMac has a gorgeous panel and is a joy to edit on.
M3 certainly seems to be a great chip though...I am hoping to test the Mac mini M3 Pro when they drop it...

I agree with @kyry…. I have an external sound system which I had plugged into the BACK of my older style Mac. The Jack therefore couldn’t be seen. Now if I use the side port it just looks so bad. A work around was getting an adaptor to a usb-c plug and use a port at the back, but with so few ports available, it’s another one taken. Guess I will now need to get a usb hub as well!!!

Thank you, for this excellent review of the new colorful 24-inch M-3 iMac desktops. In 1996, I started my Apple All-in-One journey with a 5400 desktop system with an internal Apple Video card system and editing software, an internal Apple TV/FM radio card system and with its matching black and white remote control. In addition, currently in my collection, I owned a 20-inch white G4 iMac, a glossy white 20-inch G5 iMac, and a glossy white 24-inch Intel iMac. Sometime in 2024, my goal is to also add a "space gray" 27-inch IMac Pro to my collection. While, most recommend that people coming from a windows computer to an Apple computer buy a "mac mini", I always strongly suggested that, they select an iMac system to get the full Apple experience (smile...smile).

I’ve got a 2021 iMac in Purple which means it’s spec’d up. In my case I got the 16/1TB version. I mostly do productivity work on it and it’s more than enough computer. It cost me about $2,100 to get it like that, and I would say it’s a very good value for the money. I was using it with an M2 Air on the side yesterday and taking advantage of Sidecar. I’m pretty sure windows doesn’t do anything like that. I think that’s going to be my standard setup going forward instead of getting a second display because I don’t have to plug anything in but that’s besides the point.
My opinion on this iMac is that it’s definitely the nicest computer I’ve ever owned and I’m sure the new M3 version would be even better. $2,000-$3,000 seems to be the real price point for a well setup Mac without any real compromises. Once you’ve got your head around that you stop being disappointed by lack of this or lack of that, such as Ram or Storage for instance. When you compare what you get in an all in one to the competition it’s great. Speaking of the competition, you know who else makes something like this? No one.

They have always been stunning Macs, and now with Apple silicon, they are even better. With Apple's own chip, the 8/16/24 GB is far less important than it used to be. @@DavidLewisTech I think people think they’re playthings because they’re overcompensating their actual computer needs. The standard M series chip isn’t enough for them they “need” a pro or max chip in their machine because they do “real” work. That’s a lot of it. What I’ve found running two businesses off this iMac is that the M1 is a little more than I actually need, and it’s the worst chip Apple has ever made for a Mac. That’s how good it is.
Another issue is the 24” screen size after you’ve gotten used to a 27” but those same people will use a 13” MBP because they need to take it to a coffee shop to work for some reason and the screen size is just fine at the coffee shop. The 24” size is really not much of an issue as you are aware.

let's also imagine that you want the new fastest model every year as a professional, it would make more financial sense to get a mac studio and then sell it on and buy a new one every year, or better yet, if you're a professional that needs to take their work with them on a moment's notice, you could get a studio display and the new macbook. sure it costs more but it also will last you and is less waste into the environment.

I think Apple missed the opportunity to make a M3 iMac Pro. Putting a M3 chip in a consumer level iMac is overkill for the audience it's intended for. The target market for the iMac are parents, siblings, kids doing homework, web browsing. This demographic has no idea what the difference is between Apple Silicon and Intel. They want a machine that boots up and shuts down quickly, render web pages instantly, and a machine to pay their bills - all of which are achievable on the M1. Apple should have kept the M1 iMac around for those users and made a 27" M3 iMac Pro based around the Studio Display. Put in a M3 Pro or M3 Max and let that machine fly. You rightly pointed out that the SSD on the base model M3 compared to the M1 iMac and that is a let down. I have a 1 TB M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB of RAM and I'd be disappointed to have a slower SSD because as you know video files can be huge. I don't want to wait longer than I have to to transfer my footage from the internal drive off to an SSD when I'm done with my edits. Granted I only film and edit footage from an iPhone 12, but honestly my M1 Air handles everything without a hiccup. Again, the M3 is not needed and Apple missed the chance to make a killer M3 iMac Pro, which does bother me.

I think the biggest area that Apple is failing to address currently is value. The Studio Display is almost the same price as the last 27inch iMac. No computer, no keyboard or mouse, but the same price? This smaller iMac is not even 24 inches, they had to hold back half and inch. The entry level has only one cooling fan, no Ethernet port, one NAND chip, a small hard drive and MacOS uses up 40-50% of the 8gig of Ram before you open a single application.
I feel that this machine should have been a 25 inch model. It should also start with 12 gig of Ram and a 512 Gig SSD, with 4 ports, with 2 cooling fans and the Ethernet port, for the same base price.
Apple are losing both sales volume and profit levels. Fewer Mac users is long term decline. They need to let go of their massive profit margins and offer more value. They are slowly killing the brand

@@DavidLewisTech I have a 2017 27" iMac with 2tb of storage and 64gb of memory. I would not want to go any lower than that with my next Mac.

I can totally understand that - that in-built storage is so convenient. Memory wise though you may surprise yourself with just how different Apple silicon is to your model...

Nobody should buy the base model.
    Here is why.
    Half the ports.
    Half the SSD speed.
When the system runs out of RAM and in case of 8GB it will then it will use the ssd for swap filing which will drastically shorten the SSDs lifespan.
And since both the SSD and RAM are soldered on the motherboard they cant be replaced, so once you run out of warranty you are on your own if any of the two fails you can throw it out or use it as decoration.
Bare minimum should be 16GB of RAM with 512GB ssd.
But the more ram and ssd you have the longer the system will work.
So if You are planning tp use it for many years a maxed out model may be expensive but probably will be cheaper on the long run as you wont have to buy comouter after computer.
Thats for daily and heavy users.
If you only tirn on your computer once in a week and use it only for browsing and watching videos you are good with the base model it wont make a difference.

good input with which I would generally agree with you on most points. I bought the base model to make content about it and establish baseline knowledge. But great points well made - thank you

No, I'm not gonna give an iMac with such a small screen a chance.
I can't believe they ditched the 27", if anything they should have kept the 27" and supplemented it with a 30" or 32".
I love my 2015 iMac 27" retina with 64 GB RAM, works very nice for music production, but screen is still a bit small, would like 32".
With the specs on the newer machines combined with the insane prices on updates, I would rather be looking at building a hackintosh.

Apple were obviously saving on production costs... by not releasing new colour-ways or peripherals, etc, on the M3 iMac.
These's a reason the back is the only part of the iMac that men-folk like to gawk at. And that the front and peripherals are all 'girly' coloured.
The iMac is now a third tier product, designed especially for women, non-heterosexuals and middle-class families generally.
investing in Apple 'Separates' is now the only 'Apple way' for men-folk. Either the 'laptop-monitor' set-up, or 'Mini or studio-monitor' scenario.
As soon as they decided to stay with the twenty-three point five inch display... you knew they wanted to drive the male herd into Apple separates.
