This video was perfect. I had no idea how the mechanism worked, and your walk through was clear and concise. Looking forward to fixing mine. I have the brushless one and messed it up by using it as a impact wrench on my car and it twisted the 3/8" square drive before it snapped it. Now the bit release doesn't always stay disengaged.
I'm a home owner and have had an arsenal of Ryobi tools for several years. My 1/4" driver has seen very little use but has become the first casualty by not holding bits. I can see the ball bearings so it must be a broken spring. Great video, including the links to repair parts saved me a lot of time.**EDIT** Ordered all spare parts. I've got the PBLIDO1 Brushless model and upon disassembly noticed the spring was taller, possibly stretched? This model has 3 ball bearings and the new ball bearings are unfortunately too small. Reassembled with only the new spring and tool still won't hold bit.
Good video. I was able to remove retaining clip as you showed but I couldn't put it all back together. I tried the marker cap and a couple of small screwdrivers but it just would not seat. I finally used an Irwin quick grip clamp and clamped down on one of the ends of the clip and the back of the driver so that freed up my hands. Then I was able to use two small screwdrivers to push the rest of the clip down. My hands are strained from all the effort, but there is a sense of accomplishment putting it all back together and it works now, so thanks!
The video has great visuals and info. (Excluding the initial jokes.) My impact is new and newly not holding bits, so not sure if I will just return it. Thanks so much for making the video! Very helpful to see the breakdown of it.
Mine just fell apart after using a small bit to drive some screws into wood. I guess the friction pull the retaining ring out. I thought I had lost all the parts and was about to get a new one with the ryobi days promo, but then came across this video. Went to check mine and realized I just lost the ball bearings and the spring, I managed to recover the washer and ring and forgot about it. Plus, the website you listed also has them if I was missing them. Just placed the order, now I have to figure out what tool I want to get instead lol Thanks for the vid
Thanks for the video. It came apart just as you described. However, and the is always a however :-). With everything removed, inserted a socket bit as down the opening. The bit doesn't go deep enough to let the bearings to lock into place. Any ideas? Thanks again
This method should work for many brands and models of impact drivers, I just used a Ryobi for this demonstration.
I call Ryobi mom tools
You do a great job you speak clearly your knowledgeable and you have a believable look on your face. Good job sir!

Where did you find parts?? I have the same model missing a sleeve and can't find any for Ryobi. Was wondering if a Milwaukee one would fit
