When I worked in a school I ran knitting classes for students at lunch time. A number of boys joined and they were some of the best knitters. It is great for learning sequencing, helps students with math. Football/soccer coaches have had players learn knitting to help them learn patterns and sequencing to help them learn plays. Great job in teaching your grandson to knit!
Honestly knitting/crochet and other things like it are so good for ADHD (and maybe autism but I haven't been diagnosed with that yet) I started learning crochet back in elementary school and having something to do with my hands really helps me focus on things sometimes, especially once I got good enough at it that I didn't have to pay so much attention to my stitches.
