Its summer time. Its a glacier so theres ice all year around, its probably not as cold as it looks, especially if you were there all winter. IDK exactly how that kennel works.
Alot of these glacier touring dogs don't live up there year round from what i understand. Some of these kennels up there are seasonal. This one looks like a camp.
I don't think dog mushing is inhumane, but alot of these touring kennels over lap with racing. I DO think dog sled RACING should be illegal. If you own a bunch of racing dogs, its in your best interest for them to run through the off season. So they get shipped up to the glacier to pull touring sleds. Its also how some people train their younger dogs, throw them in a touring group with a bunch of older slower dogs, let them figure it out.
I feel like if the racing was less of a thing, alot of these glacier tours would shift to indigenous mushers instead of these racing yokels from the mainland. It seems like it would be a good source of income for those communities. There really isn't a ton of opportunity in the arctic lol. Why are most sled dogs tours done by rich white people into racing? Seems off.
And native mushers can't compete with people in the mainland, they have better access to dogs, dog food, cheaper fuel, etc. If there is a race in Kotzebue or somewhere. A local won't win. They can't compete with these dedicated racing guys. Its so one-sided lol. Dog sled racing is BASICALLY pay-to-win. For the most part.
*i work in dog sled racing I wrote this reddit about it if you want to learn more www.reddit.com/r/dogs/comments/japt8w/discussion_so_i_work_in_sled_dog_racing/?context=3

My wife and I visited Skagway and Denver Glacier last week. It was a wonderful experience and the ride to and from the camp on the helicopter was fantastic. Even though we were on the glacier the air temperature hovered around 70 degrees. It was comfortable with just layers, although shirt sleeves would have been fine.

Their bodies put off alot of heat, smaller spaces heat up faster.
Most of them don't use the houses anyway, they dig holes in the ground and lay there. They are built for weather much colder than that.

This is in July and the temperatures are very comfortable 70 F/21C when the weather is good. Local guides are well adapted to this environment. The warm outerwear provided by the tour company and the tourists are dressed up warm because they do not know what to expect, and everyone's tolerance to cold is different.

Stupid, they are not cold. Anyway, a lot of homeless people even don’t have a small house to live in. I hate how Americans always think they are the best by keeping their poor pets in the house.

@@nguyenthiphuonganh I don't think mushing is inhumane. But these huge numbers of dogs and BS mainly stems from dog sled racing culture. Alot of these dogs that get sent to the glacier over summer are racing dogs. Other wise they are just sitting around costing you money. Send them to the glacier to earn their keep and stay in shape during the off season. Even a busy touring kennel doesn't TRULY need this many dogs. I think dog sled RACING should be illegal.
Why are all these touring kennels owned by rich white people from the mainland anyway? Glacier tours seem like theyd be a GREAT source of income for these native communities. Not a ton of opportunity in the arctic.
keeping 200 dogs on chains is a product of the industrial revolution. It would be costly AF and basically impossible to keep 200 dogs like this 100 years ago.
