I'm a mobile DJ, spinning tunes at corporate events and weddings. I loved this song when it came out and I'm still amazed at it's staying power. As fresh today as 25 years ago. That being said, I never had time to watch videos and only today saw this on TH-cam. Wow! What a great video. Making it look like it was recorded in the 60's by filming in Black & White. Even the turntables are retro, lol.
coming up for 30 years ago still would you ever see a collaboration between musicians from quite different generations and musical traditions performing like this today?
The Dame's had 70 years of hits. A top single every decade since the 1950s - the Propellerheads were lucky enough to have her give them this one. There's a point where you go beyond simply being a hit maker, and become immortal.
When this song was released I was DJing at a club in Boston. We had Goth/Industrial nights, Britpop/Mod nights, and Swing/Lounge nights... This was the one track that got played on all three... Perfection for bringing the tribes together. The entire album is a banger and a masterpiece of producing.
A great song with a great singer and a great video. The video is a postmodern mashup of early 60s and early 80s aesthetics, I would like a lot more of that.
Dame Shirley Bassey is truly a treat to the ears she’s in a league of her own she sang goldfinger diamonds are for ever moo taker she has done a lot of bond songs and she’s done a little bit of history also a real treat enjoy she’s truly something else Dame shirley God Bless and thank you so much for your golden voice ♥️ 🌹 ♥️
The whole project is a masterpiece. BBC personnel are perfect, as well as the three brass professors! The sound, the pace, the outfits...and the luxury of high quality black&white.
Have you read up on the director/producer Stewart Morris who did a lot with hert during the 70s and 80s? In the time it should be on tape in one or two runs, and rehearsel was everything. And budget wise the sky is the limit. This is nice reminder of those days..

Every single song is a banger and has been licensed in so much media in the late ‘90s and 2000s - The Matrix, Wipeout for N64, and the very first iPod commercial to name a small fraction.

Awesome voice! When Shirley opens the taps, I don't think any other female singer can come close to her power. She makes a Saturn 5 rocket seem under powered!
I think Shirley is the best singer in the uk . I was introduced to her music in my early 20s by an older lady that lived upstairs from me. I was an instant fan. Shes got an amazing vocie. ❤❤❤❤
I think genre plays a part; Propellerheads were part of the Big Beat scene which was always rather big on combining samples from older songs to make something new, so naturally if any genre was going to be combined with an old Shirley Bassey song it was going to be this one. A similar example of this effect would be Junkie XL' remix of A Little Less Conversation by Elvis Presley. I think the oldest version I can think of where an old song got modernised quite well was the synth version of Music for the Funeral March of Queen Mary that got used in A Clockwork Orange. A good example of the formula put in reverse that I quite like is Crazy in Love by Swing Republic which is an Electro Swing cover of Crazy in Love by Beyonce. Of course this rule isn't 100% true as there are genres that aren't sample based that still combine well with older genres. In recent years it's become clear that Drum and Bass goes pretty well with Rock music. In short, there will always be genres that blend well together, and discovering those genres is all part of the fun :D.
I loved this when it came out, still do, a classic amalgam of sounds BEAUTIFULLY arranged and produced and introducing Ms Bassey's voice to a fresh audience. In much the same way as Johnny Cash's rendition of Hurt married different genre's together, it has a totally timeless quality that stands up for itself every time it is heard. We benefit greatly from those composers, arrangers and producers who have a breadth of listening history and an appreciation of many different sounds for their own sake and their capacity to give them back to us in a new form. Great stuff!
There is nothing, nothing, NOTHING better right now than Ms. Shirley Bassey singing this song -- except perhaps for her singing Goldfinger! She is a musical treasure!
The liner notes of the Propellerheads' album Decksandrumsandrockandroll included the lines: "We would like to extend our maximum respect to Shirley Bassey for honouring us with her performance. We are still in shock...."
