    Kawasoe sensei is not just doing a kata infact here he is clearly showing the fundamentals of kihon.Nakayama Sensei was right when he said that Kawasoe Sensei has come closest to have perfect basics.

      In early 70s, when training under Nakayama, Sensei in Suidobashi, he always insisted we look in the direction of the next sequence as if to see the attacker or attack actually and move into it.

      Belts naturally wear out over time. But the fading from black to white is also symbolic. It represents a new understanding of an old teaching.
      If I were ever a black belt, I'd rather wear my worn out black belt.

    turning the head or not turning the head first is not mistake. how you do you kata after years of training must become personal to you...this is down to the bunkai on how you percieve the kata. some styles will teach to look as it suits a particular application...not looking may be an application of something else. if you did not know this...go learn some more bunkai 😃

    • @albertorodriguezbarrera2233
      @albertorodriguezbarrera2233 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have not eyes behind your head. Then, you have to turn your head and to look behind before begin a defensive maneuver.

    • @ricklangevoort1864
      @ricklangevoort1864 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One doesn't "learn" bunkai. Contrary to what many people think, bunkai is not application of techniques. And katas are not personal; within a given frame (i.e. style) kata's should remain the same between different practitioners. Otherwise, what's going to happen, is just this; people thinking it is not necessary to look at where you're going, people adding ingredients (or removing them) as they see fit and before you know it, shotokan in dojo X is not shotokan anymore. You see that happen way too many times; people thinking they know shotokan because their Sensei told them so, only to find out that in another "shotokan dojo" they do completely different things.

    While he certainly puts the movements together in the correct order and there is fluidity in his movement, he still has many of the same errors that I would fail a yellow belt on. I have studied many kata, but I have always considered this the master level kata as there is nowhere to hide while doing this one. On the whole, this is an ok basic resource.

      @@spikefunakoshi5667 - Shotokan went through an interesting period where they taught kata with no meaning. It was partly as a result of when Funakoshi started teaching karate to children. It was accentuated after the loss in WW2. At that point kata was taught only as a physical form. Most kata, as taught in Shotokan, are not actually the kata that Gichin Funakoshi taught, but were as taught by his son Gigo Funakoshi. If you compare the photos in original version of Karate-do Kyohan with the 1973 edition, you can see large differences, that Gigo introduced.
      Where have I picked up my study about kata? Usual place, thirty plus years of study and training.

      @@spikefunakoshi5667 - I agree, most people neglect the importance of Taikyoku Shodan. I have managed to get it under ten seconds, but it is hard to do it in eight seconds with good form, technique and focus when doing the way that Gigo taught. Six to eight seconds is achievable if done the way that Gichin taught the kata. I find it an interesting evolution. My favourite kata is Kwanku-dai/Kanku-dai. This was expanded into the Heian/Pinan kata. And from these was derived the Taiyoku/Kihon kata. I love the simplification, which is the opposite of what most martial artists do. Most martial artists think that it is good to know hundreds of techniques, each for their specialist application. I keep trying to narrow it down to less than a dozen. If you count each stance as a technique and breathing as a technique, etc, you can make a very effective martial art with only about 40 techniques.

      @@spikefunakoshi5667 - Gichin Funakoshi said a good student can do it in six to eight seconds. BUT, the important thing is you must still have good form. A lot of people hide bad form with speed. The benefits are just the usual, speed and power. It is also useful doing kata at quarter speed, that ensures balance and precision of technique.
      And while he is showing the movements, why would he do it with flawed technique? The whole point of training is to never use flawed technique. It is really hard for a trained karateka to do kata badly, intentionally.
