  • DIY Installing Rustic Oak Flooring - From TREE to FLOOR - Wide Plank Face Nailed Flooring
DIY Installing Rough-Cut Oak Flooring - In this video, Dad and I install the hardwood floors in the living room/kitchen area. These boards are made from rough-cut lumber (that have been planed down) made from trees from our land. It created a very rustic farmhouse floor. These are trees that we had cut down while clearing for the house. Then we hired Jason, from Willowridge Portable Sawmill, to come to our property and mill the lumber.
We face nailed the flooring boards using 3 1/2” square-head nails (link below). We tried to hit floor joist as much as we could. We put nails in the ends of all the boards, and some of those didn’t hit joist, but they did grab 3/4” subfloor. After all the floors were down, we set all the nails about 1/8” below the surface. That way we can run a sander over the floors.
Thanks for watching and subscribe to follow the progress of the house.

Can you make a short video of how it looks after 2 months of heating season? I have made oak floor of wider planks (up to 62cm (limitation on planer), but I used tung and groove on all sides. In addition, I glued all surface to chipboard subfloor. Wood was kiln-dried to 8%. And still, after winter, some planks have shrunken, got loose edges from glue, making up to 3mm gaps. But I have a very dry climate inside. Sometimes, it is down to 20% relative humidity.

❤ absolutely beautiful ! Was looking for a old school flooring but everything I could find in TH-cam was vinyl and I hated that. Anything you would do differently?

Just what I am about to undertake in the Uk. Face nailed with cut nails, mixed width boards with tung oil finish.
    You did a great job.
Do you have some pictures of 5e finished oak floor with tung oil?.

You can look at this video. th-cam.com/video/x0nm0lB3B3g/w-d-xo.html. I walked through the house and you can see the oak floors and they already have the tung oil on them. It looks really good on oak. It darkened them just a little and gave it a warm honey color.

Do you have to wait two years to dry the wood

Any issues with cupping on the wider boards ?

    • @CountryGirlLiving
      @CountryGirlLiving  2 ปีที่แล้ว

We just had 2 or 3 of the oak boards that have cupped a little bit, but not too bad. The pine, which was 10" wide, didn't cup at all.

How many pounds of nails did you use?

  • @michaelclairforet5031

Well that’s one way not to do it. Might would have considered 2” rough cut and then sanded it smooth. But looks good.

    What type
Of finish did you put on them ? And how many layers? We did this recently and I want to make sure everything is done right. So they can properly be mopped and not have any areas that could cause splinters if walking barefoot ?

I used tung oil by The Real Milk Paint Company. I made a video showing how I did that. Check it out here
