An interesting point is that when GP boots were issued to Australian troops in Vietnam (comencing in 1966 I believe) they were constructed with a metal plate as an insert in the boot (I suspect as a result of the use of Punji pits) . These GP boots (especially the Seal brand ones) were very popular with American troops who would pay almost anything to obtain a pair. I was able to swap a pair with a officer training class mate who got them from his father who deployed with them in his trunk but never used them.

Nice work. The lack of jungle warfare experience of the US at the time (1965) is showing by the attachment of brightly coloured US Army tag, Brigade patch and name patch plus the white airborne wings. Subdued patches were the norm within 2 years. The tropical combat boots were brilliant and I saw them still being worn in the field in 1986-1988 amongst Australian SASR and Vietnam veteran Infantry NCO’s.

As one french officer said in the early 1950s in indochina
    We're winning some battles
    But losing the war!

I always loved that 1st pattern jacket. I have a 3rd pattern i wear as a light jacket in the summer. Where the hell did you get those boots from? They are like Rocking Horse S**t, rare as hens teeth.

The boots came from US eBay, they weren't too dear as they're an 11XN, so a bit tight but wearable.

Hi, was the 161 Battery RNZA in the Operation Hump? I am sure that the gunners got a citation from USA, Australia and South Vietnam? Comment? Harera

Quite so, the battery received a unit citation from the US in 1977 for service during the Vietnam War.
