When you track without cymbals, it allows you to really compress the hell out of the room mics without having the cymbals overpower everything. It’s a great technique but a pain in the ass to achieve whilst making it sound natural. In the case of SFTD, it worked swingingly thanks to Grohl being a madman!
No, this is just a demo, on the album they recorded the drums and cymbals separately. This is just them hashing the song out. I am a drummer and have learned this song note for note and listened to it probably 100 times and can tell you definitively that none of this track was used on song. The intro is basically the exact same but I guarantee you this isn't the same recording used on the album. The outro is totally different on this recording though.
@@KingBlonde so that bleeding between the cymbals and the drums would not occur, giving you unmatched clarity, at the cost of having to do really precise takes for the cymbal-only play and the drum-only part or else it would sound like poop, basically a feat only few drummers like grohl can do consistently lol(and as far as we know he too would get angry about it because of how hard it is to redo the same part again near perfectly.)
@vailenia I have the drum tracks for 'Do it again' and also the demo version of 'little sister'... there both on Demo's for the deaf.. ill try and upload them if i get the chance to!
@eddienolan89 Because it's not the drum track used for the finished song. The drum part between the intro and the outro is in mono on the left on the original, and MAITLY because i'm a drummer, and i know up to the smallest beat of this track. Listen the drum track at 1"00 and compare to the original : he finish on the snare drum instead of the floor tom. until the end thoses drum fills are often different.
1"43 : a little more toms than that.. 1"46 : not snare, i'ts a tom roll 1"51 : it's snare + cymbal hit I'm not gonna make this for the whole song.. I love Trautmann, Castillo, & Theodore but Grohl will always be my favourite QOTSA drummer.
Don't forget Alfredo Hernandez!
You forgot the best one
They're all better than grohl

If it's not the album version, he certainly managed to replicate that little yell at 5:30 pretty accurately each time!
It was edited for the album, some fills chopped and re-arranged. Most of this track is definitely from the final song.
Look up the song "slip it in" by Black Flag :) Dave clearly paying homage to that tune
You can tell it's Grohl from the little shout at 5:31
you can tell it is him by how fucking crazy good it is!
AWESOME hahahahah
And for all these years I've always thought it was Josh who did the "Hey!"
I think so to, its Josh. Actually, I just came from their show in Argentina and it happened exactly that way...
It just straight out sounds like dave.
The drumming on this track is absolutely insane and I don't know if it's just me but I think the tempo is much faster in this version than the studio.

I thought they used electric drum pads instead of real drums for the cymbal track
@@noahcalland8316yeah he used electric pads when recording the cymbals track
I like that you can hear Josh sing nonsense in the background if you listen closely
I fucking love this snare so much
It's the real track. Josh wanted to separate the drums from the cymbals for some reason, that's what makes it slightly artificial sounding.
Humza Ahmed Josh has been doing that for a long time now

This isn't the album version, the drum fills are completely different
very goood i love that sooong

Why would they track the cymbals and drums separately? Not disbelieving you, but asking. That seems totally counter-intuitive.

My theory is that they used some of the demo drum parts and parts they didnt like where scraped.
But that version is very interesting and i would have heard this before, so thank you for that !
(sorry if bad english i'm french)
victor is right. this is not the isolated track from the album version.
Any drummers out there that have learnt the song will know this is not the album version. Most of the fills are different for a start.
+declanmcg4 that's why it says demo. this is a raw studio recording
Still, this is really damn good. Then again, it is QOTSA and nothing they do is bad.
fuck those are great drums
OMG.
This definitely Dave, but this is just a demo of SFTD.
@marcelotantotero Dave Ghrol!
FUCK YEAH!!!
Mark Lanegan sings it on the album, but you can hear Josh in this take singing mostly jibberish.
I never said it wasn't Dave, I just said it was not the drums from the album, maybe another take. But of COURSE it's Dave.
3:13 two!
how did u get this?
Hi, what fill is he playing right at the end say 30 secs. I dont wanna say triplets but what are they? Cheers
it took someone five years to reply, but yes, they are triplets.
is Joey Castillo?
Doesn't Matt Langley sing this one?
nah the fills are different, and he's playing on the ride bell, in the original its all crashing
HEY!
It's just a different mix
Dave GROHL

Sounds like some kind of "elaborated" demo to me
Actually not so much jibberish, he's just kinda singing notes. Not really saying any words.
*Mark Lanegan, fuck, sorry.
Not really those drums on the album, but close
