      @@ericmsandoval yes and no. The recordings on Meantime were a mix between wooden snare and brass snare. John uses a brass snare live so you're probably better off getting a brass snare cranked

    Yes... Stanier is what you would like to be as a drummer. Precise, powerful, rudimentary, control and sound beyond belief and he is just an outstanding Drummer / Musician.

      Absolutely right! John Stanier's drumming is outstanding.Extremely powerful, precise & tight; always focused on "serving" the song. (No spastic, unfocused show-off moves or trying to set new records in "double pedal speed" or whatever many people might consider "great rock drumming".

    I was in a band back in my teens and in a recording studio recording a few songs. We played the producer Unsung because Helmet were very influential for us, and he said "This is great, but that's a drum machine". It was actually a LIVE recording of Unsung that we'd played him, and he was gobsmacked when we told him! :D

    Can't believe I just found this. Stanier is amazing. I would take a brutal, solid, consistent player, a guy who does the right thing for the song, every day of the week, over a guy who's good but who overplays.

      Small rolling ghost notes can't be heard in the full mix, killer! Don't think it's an artifact because it's perfectly on beat and sounds intentional because of the repetition

    The second time I saw Helmet, I was front row. Told the people with me to watch John. They were mesmerized, and blown away!

    John Stanier and Ted Parsons are 2 of my favorite drummers as well the two having the best snare sound.

    Man, John is such a beast on the drums. Him and David Silveria (Korn) influenced me to play the drums and play a big part in my playing style. Helmet and Korn 4 life!!!

      Mark Dano I think he's an amazing drummer. He's been a big part of Korns evolving sound since David left and they've done a good job of still rocking

      Brandon Beats yeah I agree. Don't listen to them nearly as much as I used to, but Ray I think is a great drummer and hopefully has been one of the key components that has helped KoRn still be relevant today

      Ck out Sal Abruscato on Type O Negative's first 2 albums ('Slow, Deep, and Hard' and 'Bloody Kisses'). He is KILLING, and some of that shit is SUPER slow, too!!

      @@MarkDanov ray has proved his worth . Korn wouldn’t sound the way they do without David Silveria being influenced by stanier, bordin and vinnie paul. The groove of those 3 drummers with the power of Igor cavelera were monumental in the evolution of metal in the 1990s

    This is insane...
    Unbelievable power and precision, ridiculous drum (particularly snare) sound. Only thing that comes close is Jimmy Chamberlin's performance on The Everlasting Gaze (there's also an isolated version of that up on TH-cam).

      Elliot Stent Yeah, but very different drummers - Chamberlain was more about dynamics than sheer power. I think, along with Grohl, they were easily the 3 best drummers of the 90s.

    The third time I saw John play was in '96 (Helmet Sevendust tour?)I was trippin my ass off and couldn't see him well enough,decided on stage was best..I spent their entire set on stage..I swore if I ever had a chance again I wouldn't miss it.
    April 21,2022 Battles came to a teeny tiny club..yep,my ass was as close to his kit as I could get..3ft...the man is amazing truly breathtaking....it was my last show,(health wont allow more)Santa made up for lost time

    the breakdown is actually 5 measures of standard count. each measure counted in eighth notes (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and) and on the 6th measure he hits the kick and crash on the "and of 3". you never count past 4 or 8 in music (unless your in a weird time signature like 15/16 or 9/8 or something) so as a music teacher I must explain this correctly. its /1+2+3+4+/1+2+3+4+/1+2+3+4+/1+2+3+4+
    /1+2+3+4+/1+2+3+ +/1+2+rest/ repeat. just remember to come in on the and of 3, measure 6. super easy to count

    Listening to the record I always thought the drums were using sample triggers, but from this isolated track it's clear that these are live drums. Pretty cool.

      From what I've heard it's a mix of both a brass and wooden snare. Live though John uses just a tama brass snare
