    Today’s video is all about gout drugs for Nursing Students and NCLEX Review.
    Allopurinol and colchicine are both used to treat gout by reducing uric acid. Allopurinol is a medication used to reduce the amount of uric acid in the blood, while colchicine is used to reduce inflammation and swelling.
    Both medications are safe for most clients - but as a nurse, you must be aware of their differences and implications when administering these medications.

    • @howdlej123
      @howdlej123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Magnifico-ck5xd Might as well comment despite this comment being old in case anyone is seeking an answer. Allopurinol is only to prevent / reduce the frequency of attacks. You will most likely be prescribed it to take daily for as long as the condition affects you. it will do nothing for you when you have a flare up. In this case you should ask / phone your doctor and get a prescription of Colchicine during a flare up and take it as prescribed until the swelling and pain is gone. You will still continue to take Allopurinol to prevent further attacks though if you're already on Allopurinol a doctor may adjust your dosage.

      Hello! I have gout, have had it for 8 years now. One shouldn't take Allopurinol and Colchicine at the same time. Allopurinol is notorious for worsening acute attacks. You can resume use of Allopurinol after the inflammation and pain of the acute attack has subsided.

    *Colchicine is not a uric acid reducer. It is an anti-inflammatory specifically used for gout*
    According to all medical sources, of which I will use Davis Drug Guide as an example, colchicine "interferes with functions of WBCs in initiating and perpetuating the inflammatory response to monosodium urate crystals." It reduces inflammation and pain from uric acid crystal buildup in the joints.
