It's important to note that not every fisherman harvests product illegally. There are many out there that are stewards of the environment and actually help to protect the resource.

How deep (mesh deep) usually is the net? What's the gill net spec? Stretch mesh size?

these fish aren't dead, they aren't caught long enough to kill them. you'd expect the first dead ones in around 12-15 hours, especially self breath species like these rock fish(fish who can circulate water over their gills by sucking in water.)

Keeping track of the fish is all well and good. But the restrictions on the fishermen are strangling these poor people.

Gilles, if the mesh size, length of net and other factors are kept strictly regulated gill netting is relatively environmentally sound! Also, these men rely on the sea and the fish they catch for their survival, so i'm sure that they will choose the most sustainable methods to make it last for this generation and the next.

In the current state of affairs, if this method continues, they will be no more fish to catch. The Striped Bass is worth more alive than dead. Its been proven in many other states! Make the Striped Bass a gamefish.

What about when something goes wrong? we have many gill nets floating around the ocean, known as ghost nets, which are killing very large amounts of marine life.

Nicholas DelleDonne yeah and you so called sports fisherman don’t kill your share either right? Just because you caught it on s hook don’t think they all live. You won’t live long enough to put us out of business!! Good luck trying idiot

300lbs a day limit....and what happens to the fish over that limit? thrown back? and what if they're injured? that's not helping the population. I understand yearly quotas, but daily quotas ruin the fish. we had daily quotas on our lobsters a few years ago, the quality of the lobsters went way down since they were left in the trap for days at a time.

SirLobsterman no the fish aren’t thrown back dead. If there’s another waterman fishing and they haven’t caught there limit we will give them some fish!!

No wonder the population is as low as it is. The waterman need to change the way they make money on the bay. Instead of gill netting rockfish, take sport fisherman out to fish and limit the catch. Thay way we have fish for future generations. We need to manage the resourse, not decimate the resource.

+Nicholas DelleDonne How can some one decimate the fish population if the earth is 3/4 water. And men has only being able to explore 3% of the entire plante's water. Remember that 90% of all the living things that ever exited are extinct, we did not kill them, they are gone. It is a normal thing that happen in this planet. I think people are just exaggerating

With such an increase in fishing pressure and technology fishing will eventually deplete fish stocks to where only smaller fish or un desirable fish will be caught. this might be a slower outcome for a well managed fishery but still the outcome (my opinion not a fact). Whether it is from recreational or commercial fishermen both are removing a resource for personal gain which yes i go fishing and take a few fish home for dinner, however i am not on the water 3-4 times a week catching large amounts. +Heriberto A. Perez, my personal opinion is that you are correct to say we have not explored the whole ocean however i bet we have fished a much higher percentage than we have physically explored and one of the big issues of fishing is depleting stocks of a particular species located along gulfs and rivers not 500km deep oceanic waters which we cannot explore.

What we need to do is to manage our self. We need NOT TO REPRODUCE LIKE RABBITS". The people are not going to starve to death? What do you think happens to all those fishes? you think they go to the garbage.....? NO... they go to feed people. We need to limit people to one or two kids. We have grown out of propprtions. That is a problem too. Nicholas DelleDonne. We want to balance everything, but not ourselves.
