Great to see you out teaching your son's a way of life they can then pass on to their kids.
A way of life you can pass to your sons? Have you seen how bad of decline the salmon are in? They wont be around much longer because of this kind of fishing. Hook and line is the only way to save fish. Bs they get to use nets

Hey you guys, I have watched a lot of your videos but never noticed where you were at in Alaska. That is until this video when you commented about dropping your net near the Buskin River. Buskin River! !! I fished it from the bank a long, long time ago. You see, when I was in the Navy i was stationed there 1961-1962. Your videos have been informative, entertaining and probably heavily edited. Everybody is way too calm. LOL

Thanks for the great videos. I had 2 seasons on my brother's gillnetter in Prince William Sound in 1989 & 90. Great times. I sport fished the Buskin in fall during Silver season on rising tides. A bull from the cattle ranch kept billowing at me in the background...I like your manual bowpicker set up...Running the net, looking for splashers.

We have the same problem here in Texas. Bottle nose dolphins and sharks they grab the fish off the line sometimes and the fish quit biting when they show-up
Oh wow, what a pain. I bet the dolphins are even quicker than these.
in turkey every time we try gill netting bottle nose dolphins destroy our nets.

Hi Joseph. It was a little slow that day, but we also have had worse. We are kinda die hard fishermen, and should probably pack it in sooner, but such beautiful surroundings it's easy to say "let's give it another 15 minutes or so''. Glad you enjoyed the video. Take care.
I fished salmon for years in Ireland on a similar set up as this seals would make your blood boil between pulling heads out of the net holes they make horrible. Would be nice if you could shoot the net close to shore and have someone scan it with a 308 ive been told this works 😅
A few shots with a wrist rocket will scare the seals away.

Saw someone lose their rifle (could have been a bb gun) into the water here once, it got snagged by the net and *slash*. Not sure they went back for it.

Hey guys were those coho or sockeye salmon? My son and I caught some coho in a river in BC ,they were very good eating . Them seals were in the river too . One tried to steal a salmon a guy had tied up to his rod holder. I hear BC is thinking a season for seals .
Hi Andy! These were sockeye. Coho come later in the fall mostly. The seals are a real pain. Sneaky little thieves, lol.
@@EISAlaska Sockeye are the best for cold smoking or even frying up . Rock fish are pretty close to halibut , but a lot less expensive here in Alberta . I love fresh fish,thanks for doing your best to keep them fresh . It really makes a difference .

What competition ? The lack of any other boats around is amazing and the fishing looks good . My mother was born in Oregon so can I claim US citizenship and move to Alaska ? On second thought I will need a whole new wardrobe , shorts and thongs is not going to cut it . lol. The cold would probably kill me .
Yeah, little bit of competition this day, but not many. I think the sealions and seals are the biggest threat. Idk about your other question, I'd assume so if you were born here, I'm not an immigration officer though, lol. But yes, xtratuff boots and grunden bibs you'll be all set.
@@EISAlaska My mothers father died in Oregon and my Mother ended up going to the UK to live with her Aunt and Uncle . She married an English guy and I was born in Red Hill Surrey UK . Then the whole family immigrated to Australia when I was only two months old , our passage was paid by Mr Roebuck of Sears Roebuck and Co. a close friend of my parents , to Australia . Before WW2 my Parents were quite wealthy but after WW2 they were broke as my dad was crippled in the war at Dunkirk for several years and it sent him broke . So now I am nothing really , not really a Pommy not accepted as an true blue Aussie and not American either .
Are plungers on Salmon Seiners still a thing up there? Man, when we'd closed a set our skipper was hot on us plunging till we'd pursed. Even the skiff man had a little short handled plunger!
You bet! Nothing has changed there. You would be amazed with everything else. 20' tractor jet skiffs with 400+ HP, huge power blocks with gripper wheels that haul a set in 12 minutes or so. Very competitive, we are just small fry!

What’s the best size for salmon hill nets? And the mesh size, I wanted to buy one and it will be our first time to use it, any recommendations and probably where to buy it? Thank you!

Hi Guys. I think it depends a lot on the area you want to fish. Nets come in differen't shades and some work better than others. I believe our mesh size is 5". If there are any commercial gillnetters in your town, ask them for advice. They will have the lowdown and may even have some old gear you can repurpose or know someone that hangs nets that can build one for you. Other resources are the local ADFG office and marine stores. Wish I was more help, but we are just hobby gillnetters ;).

Some people use them, but we don’t. From what we’ve seen the seals don’t go away for long.

Why do you slit the gills?
It's to bleed them out. Dispatches the fish, helps with keeping the fillets clear of blood.

Aren’t gill nets illegal?
They are legal in Alaska for the harvest of salmon. Bycatch rates and incidental takes of seabirds and marine mammels are very rare due to the fact the nets are not left unattended and also location they are fished. Hi-seas drift gillnets were banned to to the high rate of bycatch, lost gear "ghost fishing" and general disregard for the environment and fish stocks.
@@EISAlaska I’ve watched a few of the seal rescues from Namibia, the Gil nets seem to do the most damage. Anyway, thanks for the reply. I thought they were out loaded in US.

THAT IS REALLY STRANGE GILL NET FISHING FOR SALMON. and hard to be leave your pulling in a 300 foot long net or longer by hand, we have hydrophilic net roller pullers,net lifter and the net comes off the lifter and runs down a stainless steel table with 3 or 4 people pulling the fish out of the net, we set the net in the morning one day and go back the next morning and lift, each trip we fill many 100 pond tubes. unless the waves on the great lake are 10 to 12 feet high then they get left until the next day, same weather we fishing salmon, haring, chubs, white fish and others, we never sit around a net once its in .. watching your other videos i keep asking my self why are the fishing with a big real and line with a string of flash hooks and not using a gill net, on them huge fish were your long lining i can see why no gill net there way to big a fish for that but the rock fish and them yellow fish red eys and cod why waste your time with hook and line they would go in the right size gill net, we get guge lake trout in gill nets an huge salmon, walleyes,, it also dont look like you have lead weights on the bottom of the net.

i always thought subsistence meant one did not have ready access to grocery stores. you know , like people actually need the resource unlike you who seem to have a bunch of money and equipment, but mainly money.
Subsistence harvests generally apply to residents in any rural area or community. My community meets that requirement so we have these opportunities available to us. The Alaska constitution provides equal access to subsistence resources regardless of economic standing.
As for having a bunch of money.... maybe.....someday.

What a ridiculous catch of a salmon per person!
Not really. Salmon aren't available year round, so we put them up for the winter, and the rest of the off-season until they return again. Recovery for these fish is about 3-4 lbs, you have to consider that is not very much protein.
