Star Wars. Got the lightsabers, the space wizards, pretty cool stuff. Honestly, I think most people kinda “get” Star Wars. Except for the people that own Star Wars, they have no idea what they’re doing. Over the past decade this brand, that was at one point pretty much the biggest “thing” on the planet, has now become an embarrassing disaster.
It takes a special level of incompetence to achieve this, and while I’m not the first to tackle this topic (and certainly won’t be the last), I feel like 2024 has been a uniquely awful year for Star Wars.
A big budget show, the acolyte got canceled before a second season amongst awful user reviews and low ratings.
Star Wars Outlaws was a flop, to a degree where it’s caused some investors to question whether the game’s publisher Ubisoft should even stay as a public company.
And I just kinda wanted to talk about all of this.

I'd argue they killed it by letting a trio of directors create a trilogy of movies without them apparently ever even talking to each other, much less figuring out a coherent plan for how their movies would fit together... So basically, The Last Jedi killed Star Wars, and Rise of Skywalker was the coffin it was buried in.

I feel disney was trying to kiddify star wars on some level and push disney ethics.
What i feel is a good representation of disney sw issues can be found in Star Wars Rebels. At the start, it was very disney. Giving off Alladin in space vibes. The villains were just to nice. Treating the heros like school trouble makers.
But then Tarkin shows up, kills two guys for failure and all but the sith guy were mortified. That there is the problem. The disney stuff was just to kiddy. And star wars was meant as a mature show all can enjoy.

The core problem of Disneys star wars is that they are a risk averse company, and as such run and write their stories and brand that way. The best example is the Boba Fett show, where a gruff merc who has no allegiances to anyone gets retconned into a bumbling nice guy, destroying his character and broke the story before it had even started. Star Wars as a franchise was built off of risks, and now its safe, predictable and boring. It's everything it shouldn't be.

    • @MustraOrdo

This. Companies being risk averse / safe with what they put out can themselves be at risk for sliding in to irrelevancy.

    • @DetectiveMekova
      @DetectiveMekova 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +16

And the risks it does take, like The Acolyte, are just really weird ones that ends up undermining entire concepts and ideas from the original trilogy.
The Last Jedi had risks, but the risks were also really odd. It was meant to almost be an anti-star wars movie. It tried being risky, but it didn't go far enough and so it ended on a safe, cozy note which contradicted like, 75% of the message it had lol.
Disney just can't make good marvel or star wars movies or shows anymore. They don't know what humans are, or what humans like. They only know what statistics and lines like.

The problem with Solo wasn't lacking Ford. Fans simply wanted something authentic which Disney is incapable of doing. Getting an actor that looks like young Ford would have helped (there was one guy that people wanted) but the main issue is that it didn't feel like Star Wars. This is the problem with all of Disney's stuff. It simply doesn't feel like Star Wars.
It feels less like Star Wars than fan films. This goes deeper than a lack of soul.

Ofc they mentioned the force and jedi/sith here and there but it was absolutely not the main focus. That sense of wonder and adventure and strangeness is what I enjoyed, and you could do SO much with that. I remember reading somewhere that it was originally going to be a gritty war movie but with a star Wars skin suit and I really liked that idea. It makes sense, right? Regardless, they had to tone down the grit because R movies don't sell as much. Yet, they'll make The Force a female entity, and a lesbian at that. I always interpreted the force as a purely neutral entity that doesn't have a clear will, but anyone sensitive to it whether they're good or evil could wield it. It's that over explaining again.

I've got a friend that compulsively tears apart media because the way he cares is the hell of coming up with ways for it to be better and being powerless to update the thing with his improvements beyond fanfiction and forum ranting. That's why Star Wars fans "hate" Star Wars, they love it so much that it angers them when it sucks.
Similarly, people in fanbase, while outsiders might see them as odd, are also seen by outsiders as authorities. If you want to watch a funny B-movie horror flick to rag on with friends, you go and ask the person that swears by their VHS collection if they have any suggestions. Logically then, if a common consumer asks a Star Wars fan "Is there a Star Wars movie I should watch before I see this Acolyte show?" they will be told, "Skip that one, it teased a sequel it's never going to get. We should start by watching the movies called episodes 4-6, and see what if anything you end up liking about them." and the common consumer will not watch Acolyte.

But midway through shooting they had a falling out with Disney and Ron Howard was brought in. This led to massive reshoots that pushed the budget up and delays. Because of this. Solo not only ended up with a 250 million dollar budget but had an early May 2018 release that had it competing against Avengers Infinity War still riding high in theatres. Though that actually brings me to mention that there's a bigger problem in regards why Marvel has better chances to still be popular while Star Wars struggles, and is that Star Wars is a very U.S. centric franchise, though SW has considerable following in some countries, Disney wanted Star Wars to be the next big thing at a global level, we saw how hard Disney tried to push Star Wars in China with Ep. VII, but Star Wars films don't resonate that well in China, and in some other Asian countries, except maybe for Japan, and even in Japan foreign films don't perform that well as they used to (Avatar 2 wasn't that big of a success in Japan, despite the original grossing over 100 million there), and it's mostly due to the fact that there isn't a lot of nostalgia for Star Wars in various countries across the world, but super heroes, like Spider-Man, are much more well known internationally

Jedi Power Battles, Pod Racer, Jedi Starfighter, Dark Forces I and II, Jedi Outcast I and II, Battlefront I and II, Empire at War, Republic Commando, Knights of the Old Republic I and II…those are just the best, there are others that were still pretty good but not amazing like Phantom Menace, Bounty Hunter, Shadows of the Empire, Battle for Naboo, hell the Twisted Metal derby game they made was pretty fun even. Since Disney got their hands on it and gave it to EA we’ve had two mediocre Battlegrounds, a mediocre Squadrons, an okay Jedi Fallen Order, a pretty good Jedi Survivor, and an Ubislop Jedi Outlaws. I think a big part of the issue is how humor is handled: The humor in the OT felt more "real" because those movies took themselves seriously - The characters said and did things you would expect actual people to say/do based on the situation, as opposed to having big "now laugh" moments and meta-humor (e.g. stormtroopers can't aim, see kids we know what makes you laugh)

    How to fix star wars:
    - Remove 7,8, and 9 from cannon. Make it legends.
    - Hunt down the old devs from Lucasarts and hire them under a new Lucasfilm interactive department. Start making good games again
    - Begin planning a new trilogy from start to finish based on George Lucas's treatment that Bob Iger intentionally threw out.
    - remaster KOTOR
    - Ban EA or Ubisoft from ever making a star wars game
    - Only hire writers / directors who deeply care about the franchise and stop belittling fans for calling out bad writing.

I "was" a devoted SW fan. I've done TCW marathons a lot. I did like EP7 when it came out(but not anymore. I despise of it) and still love Rogue One and Mando, didn't dislike Solo and BoBF, and enjoyed Ahsoka.
8 was a shatterpoint for me and 9 was one of the nail in the coffin but still loved SW. The Coffin wasn't buried yet.
But... Acoshyte... this completely destroyed my love of SW. Not only the show itself but also how shills attack again against fans who are not liking it, especially the hate movement organized by Star Wars Explained against Star Wars Theory has completely nailed down and buried the coffin.
I'm not sure if I will ever regain my love and interest of SW to the level I used to have.

The issue is that the sequel trilogy was made by committee and it shows, with all the rewrites and director changes, and the directors that remained seemed to try to undermine each other's work.
And yes, Lucas's prequel trilogy could be silly and bland at times, but when it all came together you could see the vision of a creative come to fruition, watching Episode IX felt like they just wanted to be done with it and wait for expanded media to answer any remaining plot holes.
