Great review. Told me what I wanted to know from a prospective purchaser's point of view. Having owned 3-series and 5-series before, the BMW family perspective was apt. Accents are good, don't change a thing.
Aussies and Yanks may laugh but the best selling 2 Series Convertible in the UK and across Europe comes with a 1.5 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine. We do have the 230 and 240 models as well, but a little open top number like the 2 Series has (a) nothing to prove, and (b) is meant more for cruising around the countryside on a slow Sunday in summer. As a result, and because they're nearly always bought as a second car over here anyway, the 0-62 (0-100) time isn't what such cars are about. Sexist as some will find it, the fact is it's often considered a "wife's little runaround" over here. The 1.5 engine delivers an official 60mpg too btw.
I hear you. I live in Boston, MA, and am a 6'2 guy in my thirties and while I'd like something a little bigger ideally, I don't commute far and something like this makes more sense in a tiny, cramped city where you would never use the engine. I also have an accord if I need more space. I'm hoping nobody jokes on me if I get the smaller 2 series
It's a good question, especially because this car's 1 Series equivalent (the 165kW/310Nm 125i) is actually $23,000 less expensive than this car - although it's not quite as well equipped. If you want a RWD hatch, sure - save your money and grab a 1 Series before it becomes a front-drive car forever. However, the convertible experience isn't really comparable to the hatch.
Lovely looking car. Sadly in the UK we have to take the 220i or 220d if we want Sport trim. I'd really love this 230i spec model, but it is MSport trim only in the UK with that engine.
A great reflection on BMW at 4:40 Tom. You could have gone on to the destruction of the nomenclature of BMW's models where the numbers no longer bear any relationship to the engine.
Thanks a lot. Yes, that is also true, but it is a problem for all manufacturers as emissions laws means that turbocharging has become the only way to comply, and in the current era, that means a series of 2.0-litre turbos with different outputs. Audi have tried to address this problem with their new novel model naming system, but that was not received very well by the press!
Another great review Tom! Have you had a choice to drive the LCI 2 1 series? I'm interested in the prospect of the entry 118i as I have a soft spot for turbo 3 bangers and I've heard the 100kw unit is pretty sweet. Disappointed they're dropping the RWD platform on it as it's one of the last RWD hatch backs and actually pretty affordable in the 3 cylinder guise.
Compared to a Mazda? Yeah, because the designers didn't sit down in a room with a whiteboard, cross out BMW, and underline middle market before proceeding?
While your review soudn interesting in couldnt stand your anoying nasal voice thats sound cheesy fry deep, work with a vocal trainer and you will improve your intonation in a more natural pitch for you, cheers

Best looking convertible by miles
Excellent review Tom. I note the particular colour combination of this particular 2 Series - it is beautiful! I look forward to your future reviews.
Indeed. This lovely combination is Seaside Blue metallic, over cognac brown leather.

Glad to hear, thanks for the feedback Graham!
I have the 2018 M-Sport 230i hardtop coupe, with moonroof, in Seaside Blue. It's a wonderful car! Smooth as glass and pretty nimble!
Seaside Blue is very eye catching.

does it exist also with folding back seats?
Is it worth the 15k extra over the 1 series thought...

Tom, Please do a review on a Merc E63s AMG 2018 when it comes out! This video was awesome!
Will certainly do my best! Thanks a lot for watching this one.

Funny you mention that, Guy. I've just posted our 118i review, which you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/UEjJsWeNAmA/w-d-xo.html
😍
The car's not bad either

Can you put 2 big luggage in the 2 Series Convertible boot with rear seat folded??
Yes, with the rear seat folded that is possible
What car you prefer 2 BMW convertible or audi a3 convertible?
2 Series.

I buy this car in 2035.
Why does everything in the interior have to be so complicated
You didn’t talk about storage capacity with top up and top down, or noise levels compared to the coupe...jesus man.
Okay. The answers are: not much, and louder than the coupe. Not a car you buy for either luggage space or quietness.

I’m not sure why you would make this bizarre comment - nobody complains about this so no.. I won’t be doing any of that weird shit

Odd, I was going to comment that I like his Australian accent. Seems fine to me
