Valve pistons and piston rods!, I think you’ll find they’re valves, rocker arms and push rods! But hey, what’s in the words! Beautiful engine, just where it should be, in a room on full display. That engine is 2 years older than me, hope I’m still running as well as this engine in 2 years time. Thanks for posting.
Hi David We have no idea how vintage engines work but love the noise and look of a lovely restored piece of history. This is our good friends boat, ours was built by the same builder but with a modern engine and a different design. Thank you for taking the time to watch. B & K 👍😊☺
Thanks a lot for having Kenton show us his gorgeous boat, absolutely beautiful and a real joy to see. I was however quite surprised about the things he said about his engine, he knew about it's history, but not much about the working of these Listers. What he was saying about piston-rods under the rocker cover was something completely new to me, as under that cover are only rockers, valves, push rods and the injector. The knobs on the side don't double the cylinder size either, they are only there to lower- or raise the compression ratio. But apart from that, I was most impressed with the good looks of the boat, and can understand that Kenton, Linda and Philippa are proud to own such a nice boat.
Hi Peter It's all knobs and rods to me. 😆 My knowledge of old vintage engines is rather limited to put it mildly. Kenton and his family are very good friends of ours so I let him get on with it and just did the filming and editing. Whichever way you look at it this narrowboat is a stunner particularly if you are a fan of vintage engines, boatmans cabins and tug style fronts. As always thanks for watching. 👍😎🌞
Hi there, we agree it has a lovely tone. It belongs to our friends. We had both our boats moored up at one of our favourite spots & we decided to film it. Thank you for watching. B & K 👍👍
@@TheTillerPeopleNarrowboaters Hey I know this is a long shot but are you familiar with how those knobs he said expanded the cylinders work? I'm a mechanic but that's something I'm wondering what he meant because I'm not aware any engines like that or what he meant
Hi Michael Unfortunately we only know about the modern engines. The traditional historic engines sound and look wonderful but need expert and commited hands to maintain. Cheers. B & K 👍🍻

Hi Stephen We have only ever seen two other boat engines and engine rooms that comes close to this one. We hope to video them later this year. Fantastic vlog and a fabulous boat. If I win the lottery I want one just like that! I mentioned to Dave Moore that I’d love a traditional boat with the old engine but that I didn’t think I could drive or maintain one and he said it’s not as complicated as it looks. Watching Kenton run through his engine and operating gear I think Dave might be right! You could see from his presentation that he loves his boat and boating, just like you and Bernadette. Those Lister engines are amazing. I may have mentioned that Norton Caines had a boat for sale a while ago called Silas and it was stunning. I just need to win the lottery now. Thanks to you both and Kenton for sharing. You weren’t joking when you said you had something special next.
Hi Sylvia Glad you liked it. It is amazing how many people love and cherish their old classic engines. We think they are great but for us the amount of space they take up is a bit too much when you are cruising around a lot. Kenton and his family are rightly proud of their beautifully built boat. Been on Silas many times it was owned by some friends of ours who now have a Hudson boat called Hud. They have a very unusual and very big Lister JP4 which I hope to video this year. We will be meeting the new owners of Silas at the Hudson Gathering. Back on the Llangollen in the next vlog. Thanks for watching. 👍😎🌞

Wow!! Love the engine. How is the engine cooled? Canal water through a hull port, then a heat exchanger, returning to the canal through another hull port? Obviously not out the exhaust. Then how is the water for heating the cabin integrated to the engine? 😍
Hi Steve This Lister JP3 is our friends pride and jpy and you can certainly understand why. It was converted for marine use by the boatbuilders. Two header tanks, one water and one fuel keep it ticking along. No canal water is required which can only be a good thing. Coming off the engine are two connections which go to a twin coil calorifier. This gives free hot water when the boat is cruising along. We hope that makes sense. B & K 👍😷💑
Hi We love the vintage engines but personally we prefer the extra space and a modern engine in our own boat. The Kelvin series are probably our favourite vintage engines. Sadly we will be seeing less and less of the old thumpers. B & K
Hi Carl The main smell in the engine room is brass polish which is very nice. Heat is another thing, hence the side hatches each side are normally open. Thanks for watching. B & K 👍😎
Thanks for that 👍👍 We wouldn't know ... We like the sound of a vintage engine but modern engines for us. We just did the filming. Did you enjoy watching it? 🙂🙂
It changes the size of the combustion chamber.it is there to raise the compression ratio for cold starting only. Once started it should unscrew the knob to lower the compression ratio again so as not to over load the crank or bearings.
I'm a bit concerned with the lack of lagging on the exhaust manifold, with it being right next to an apparent passageway. Apart from that, a beautiful and well-kept installation. The newer engines just aren't as charming as the classics.
Hello You do not need to have any concerns. This is an enhanced built engine room. The brass hides a fully lagged exhaust manifold, the brass piece which is purely decorative just unbolts and comes off. It does not even get lukewarm, quite simply the best and cleanest engine room I have ever seen. Thanks for watching. B & K 👍😎🌞
I think we're not looking at the same thing. I was concerned about the cast manifold at the side of the engine block, not the vertical stack (which I thought was a silencer). Have to say I fully agree with you about the cleanliness. --Jim
No apology necessary -- just continue your delightful reports. I'm always interested to see different solutions to design problems, especially from those engineers who didn't have access to today's tools. --Jim
Hi We only made the video and know nothing about vintage engines. It belongs to good friends of ours and they really look after the engine and the rest of their beautiful boat. Cheers. B & K 👍😊☺🍻
A top exhaust looks cool but in reality it isnt as if your cruising all day you have exhaust fumes almost permanently in your face. I used to run a Hotel boat with a JP3 so I know what Im talking about
Hi You certainly make a valid point. Vintage engines look and sound wonderful but in our 43 years boating we have always had modern engines. Cheers. B & K 👍😊☺🍻
Hello This is our friend's boat. He does spend a lot of time cleaning and polishing his Lister engine. We have a modern engine but many boat owners have vintage engines and spend so much time making them look great. Cheers. B & K 👍😊☺🍻
It's our friends' boat so we were looking only at the engine. You are quite welcome to look at the inside of our boat though ... by the same boat builder 👍👍
Hi John For those who know a bit of canal and narrowboat history that horn is really sought after and sounds wonderful. We think it is a great start to a very nice video which is the important thing. Cheers. Keith 👍🍻
Hi You cannot wipe history out overnight. Battery technology is coming on in leaps and bounds but is not really suitable for narrowboats currently. A few prototypes are knocking around and hybrids exist buy it is many years away from being the norm. Far more cars, lorries, buses and factories pollute more than narrowboat engines. More of a concern is the multi fuel stove used on many narrowboats and in property which are extremely polluting. Cheers. B & K 👍😊☺🍻
Actually the production of batteries causes more pollution than this little old engine ever will. Not to mention the damage caused by mining the resources to make the batteries and electric motors.
If you liked this one, check out these stunning engines 👍👍 th-cam.com/video/YY3wgYvjDgI/w-d-xo.html

Some of the terms I think he misspoke. Can't enlarge cylinders. The rocker gear needs greasing and prelubing.
Lister used this system on several of it's diesels, a external knob rotates a screw thread that uncovers a small additional chamber.
Cylinder volume
Nice
🙂👍
Beautiful looking engine, just doesn't quite have the sound of a 2 cylinder.
Thanks for watching Mike ... they all do have an 'interesting' sound 👍👍
I have a ha2 ....sounds good but I can tell ya theres nowt wrong with the sound of that jp3......lovely bass👍
Its like 3x Lister CS
Hi
Looking at this type of engine we bet it can easily be marinised for canal boat use. Stay safe. B & K 👍💑
how does the doubling size of cylinders work?
Not sure Frances, we have a modern engine.
It changes the size of the combustion chamber.it is there to raise the compression ratio for cold starting only. Once started it should unscrew the knob to lower the compression ratio again so as not to over load the crank or bearings.
😁👍👏👏👏
Hi David
This engine is our friends pride and joy. Well maintained and regularly polished.
Keep safe. B & K 👍💑
I'm a bit concerned with the lack of lagging on the exhaust manifold, with it being right next to an apparent passageway. Apart from that, a beautiful and well-kept installation. The newer engines just aren't as charming as the classics.
Hello
You do not need to have any concerns.
--Jim
Apologies Jim
That is one reason why I let Kenton explain everything. 😊
I know very little about old engines but plenty about the modern ones.
No apology necessary -- just continue your delightful reports. I'm always interested to see different solutions to design problems, especially from those engineers who didn't have access to today's tools. --Jim
👍
how do I get a Lister Diesel in US?
Hi there, not sure how you would go about it but maybe you could search some boatyards on the Internet. Thanks for watching. 👍👍
@@TheTillerPeopleNarrowboaters how much do they cost?
Hi there, sorry but we don't know. Maybe someone else on here might have an idea of the cost
Try searching commercial fishing salvage yards...listers would have been popular back in the day and not uncommon.
love the deep throaty exhaust. reminds me of a 'rat' motor.
👍👍
do or dont you ever use your high low compression ........ you should
Hi
We only made the video and know nothing about vintage engines. It belongs to good friends of ours and they really look after the engine and the rest of their beautiful boat. Cheers. B & K 👍😊☺🍻
A top exhaust looks cool but in reality it isnt as if your cruising all day you have exhaust fumes almost permanently in your face. I used to run a Hotel boat with a JP3 so I know what Im talking about
Hi
You certainly make a valid point. Vintage engines look and sound wonderful but in our 43 years boating we have always had modern engines. Cheers. B & K 👍😊☺🍻
Too much spare time on your hands to polish that engine up like that lol
Hello This is our friend's boat. He does spend a lot of time cleaning and polishing his Lister engine. We have a modern engine but many boat owners have vintage engines and spend so much time making them look great. Cheers. B & K 👍😊☺🍻
Excellent but disappointing at the same time. "Good look round it" suggests the whole boat!
It's our friends' boat so we were looking only at the engine. You are quite welcome to look at the inside of our boat though ... by the same boat builder 👍👍

Cheers. B & K 👍😊☺🍻
Starting the video off with that asinine horn is no doubt earning you a fair share of dislikes.
Hi John
For those who know a bit of canal and narrowboat history that horn is really sought after and sounds wonderful. We think it is a great start to a very nice video which is the important thing.
Cheers. Keith 👍🍻
Just think on a bit these tugs will cause a lot of pollution. They should be made to use battery power these days
Hi
You cannot wipe history out overnight.
You are spot on. Changing to battery power will happen but it currently feels a long way off from being the perfect solution.
Cheers. B & K 👍😊☺
Just how would people be able to put enough charge into the batteries.
