David Draiman is one of the best voices in modern music. But because so many of Disturbed songs sound similar nobody realizes he has such an angelic voice.
I have a friend who just happened to be in that audience that night. He said that people who were backstage came out to see who was singing. The audience gave the band a 10 minute standing ovation. I believe this performance is one of the top 10 live tv performances of all time. It’s almost unworldly.
That's a great story. I ran across it several days later on the internet. I had never heard anything by Disturbed before, and then I watched that video probably 50 times and showed it to everyone I knew.
@@warchaser388Yes, he would. People were making comments about how he sounded. A little bit different he didn't want to strain his vocal cords cause he was actually bad sick, but he didn't want to stand up his performance.
The insane thing about this is he was sick. Had a high fever. He absolutely blew this out of the water!! It's 100% better than the the video/studio version. Amazing voice!!
The "sick" myth is a lil overblown. He wasn't sick and had no fever. He essentially had a vocal cord injury that required surgery in the end. He had been putting it off because he was afraid the surgery would ruin his singing voice (a legit possibility), but not long after this performance he gave in.
@@Qmocean he didn’t just have a vocal cord injury he had BLEEDING LESION on his vocal cord. Any singer could tell you that to perform at this caliber with that injury is insane. I agree. I have no idea where the sick myth came from. very possibly from them. But my aunt is classically trained, and this performance blew her mind knowing what he was dealing with.
I saw Disturbed live 3 times when I was in college. Even if their style of music isn’t your cup of tea, there is no denying that Dave Draiman is a world-class performer. I’m a fan of many genres and he is in a category of his own for sure. I’m so glad they did this cover so millions of people outside of the metal crowd get to hear and appreciate his talent.
I was at Rockfest in KC years ago when he did this song and the entirety of the 50,000 person audience was absolutely dead silent (no pun intended), just listening in absolute awe.
Over a billion views of just the music video on youtube alone now. 1/8th of the planet. Between that and all the other means of listening to it, I wouldn't be surprised if half the human race has experienced this wonder.
Agreed. I think some people sing better when they are performing with live music. It gives them an energy and inspiration that they don't get in a studio.
FOR ME . . . the signature of a true talent is their ability to not only duplicate the studio version, but will ALMOST ALWAYS sound better in a live. Why? They feed off the crowd and the momentum of the moment and their TRUE TALENT keeps them on course as they perform in a bigger and even better way! Blessings
Because of how sick David was that night, he was sitting down to perform. Apparently they wanted to use auto-tune because of him being sick but he absolutely refused. He is a beast. Just incredible.
It’s so crazy, he was so sick that he had to be sitting in a chair, because he couldn’t stand for the whole song. I think this is one of his best performances of this song ever.
This was actually the debut - before the recorded version was released. ALSO - he was ill with a fever and still knocked it out of the park. AND IF THAT WASNT ENOUGH, he was pissed that the audio team dared to autotune him as he wanted the raw vocals to go out.
That he performed this beautifully while seated and sick to boot speaks volumes about his training and ability. Being seated always diminishes a part of the breath control, in some singers more than others . I was a rock singer in my youth, and I found it more difficult to sing well while seated. I believe Disturbed was awarded a Grammy for this live performance. Such artistry!
@dalehammers4425 No doubt. That is one thing I loved about the Conan show. He was not afraid to feature music guests that other late night programs passed on. I'm not sure why but I missed this episode. Conan is just not the same now without Max Weinberg and the original studio band. Anyway 😮. Yes this arrangement with the different piano has a much bigger haunting sound to it. I'm glad I found this.
I just saw Disturbed last month. They have been my favorite band for 20 years but never had a chance to see them live. Hands down the most real representation of voice, emotion, and experience I have ever seen. David was flawless. So impressive.
When Disturbed was on that late night show, David was sick with a fever so he wasn’t 100%. David’s parents Jewish parents sent him to orthodox schools for him to train to become a Rabbi. Although he doesn’t practice his faith, he is a trained Cantor. He is a well trained vocalist and knows how to protect his voice.
The whole "sick" thing turned out to be a myth. He had a vocal cord injury and it was recommended that he didn't perform. He had surgery shortly after.

The original Simon and Garfunkel version was a warning to all about the decay that was happening due to technology, I always believed specifically television. In the 1960's, television went from being an occasional thing to a near constant thing. This version is the 'I told you so, why didn't you listen?' version. The scolding. The anger. Together, they convey an important message.
I heard that the writer of the song, Paul Simon, actually got in touch with the lead singer of Disturbed to congratulate him on such a brilliant cover.
Within Temptation's "Mother Earth". The entire album is such a work of art. I couldn't imagine ever skipping a song. It's an absolute masterpiece. When you press play, be ready. You'll feel the music grab you. Prepare for a ride, because you're going whether you want to or not. I'm not speaking ill of this performance. Sound of Silence will make the hardest of people feel, it's powerful. I'm more referring to it as a toe in the pool. Emotional. Moving. You can allow yourself to be overwhelmed by it, but you can still keep your balance. This is more like, if you could take your emotions to Six Flags and put them on the Ninja. Listen to a single song from "Mother Earth", and you'll understand what I mean when it picks you up and throws you in the pool.

My favorite version! This live performance had more humanity than the official studio version. Yeah, I know the Conan production folks used auto tune and David was pissed, but personally this was my favorite. Sometimes the imperfections make things better.
It’s wild that he can hit the high notes clean just as well as with the grit and distortion on his voice. He’s classically trained and incredibly talented
This is the best live performance I ever saw. Dave was not feeling well and those timpani drums next to him are hard to deal with while singing. Regardless, he knocked it out of the park!! This cover song is maybe the best cover in decades. No joke. Just incredible!

I've seen Disturbed live lots of times, they put on an amazing show. David has trained his voice, I don't remember how far his voice training went. I feel the big difference between your basic bands and great bands is amount of training and practice.
He is a trained Jewish cantor. That is why his voice is so clear, loud, resonating, and perfect! I can't believe how excellent he sounds having the flu as bad as he did. Bravo! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
David is a God! His voice is amazing and the fact he was sick for this performance and STILL performed top notch... he's amazing. The best cover of a song ever!
When I heard this the first time, the only words I could come up was - Stunning - Even now after a couple of dozen times, I still am at a loss for words to describe it. The voice and the face of excellence will have to do I guess.
He was high when he recorded the song. The day he recorded the song he didn't think he was going to do any vocals that day so he had indulged in the thing he does. It took about 3 hours for him to record this song because they didn't know how they wanted to do this song. The only instrument that was already recorded was the piano. He cried when he heard the finished song for the first time. He hadn't heard himself sing in that tone since he was a teenager. David is a trained Canter. He did the training as a teenager.

My favorite version! This live performance had more humanity than the official studio version. Yeah, I know the Conan production folks used auto tune and David was pissed, but personally this was my favorite. Sometimes the imperfections make things better.
Loved your reaction! He’s amazing! Linkin Park back in the day were amazing! Saw them 4 times. Chester especially 🙏🏼
Tool is def that band... insane live. Awesome audio.
Tool - Pneuma live drum cam.
Your mind will be blown. 🤯
You must listen to Dimash kudaubergen…. He sings live so perfectly
I'm in love ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
His voice gets me every time 😍
Disturbed is better seen live. Amazing concerts.
It’s wild that he can hit the high notes clean just as well as with the grit and distortion on his voice. He’s classically trained and incredibly talented
This one always brings a tear whenever I watch/listen to it.
This is the best live performance I ever saw. Dave was not feeling well and those timpani drums next to him are hard to deal with while singing. Regardless, he knocked it out of the park!! This cover song is maybe the best cover in decades. No joke. Just incredible!
If you get the chance to see disturbed live, do it as soon as possible. They put on a hell of a show
Oh yeah I absolutely liked it. Better than the studio version.
Draiman is AMAZING live. He's a true talent. ❤
Best live performance of ANYTHING I’ve ever seen!!! (I’m 66; also, I agree this is better than the studio version, especially with the beautiful atmosphere/visuals!) ❤️✌🏻✌🏻❤️
Disturbed and Miles Kennedy live in Houston. Sound of Silence rocks go look at the video !
His voice is Epic. Just saw them live and they are amazing.
Bravo! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is much better then the record, or at least the video, the music isn't drowning out the vocals.
David is a God! His voice is amazing and the fact he was sick for this performance and STILL performed top notch... he's amazing. The best cover of a song ever!
Disturbed live is always better than recorded ... and recorded, they're amazing. A very tight band, and incredible music.
When I heard this the first time, the only words I could come up was - Stunning - Even now after a couple of dozen times, I still am at a loss for words to describe it. The voice and the face of excellence will have to do I guess.
He was very sick that night and still hit the ball out of the park! David didn't want to disappoint his fans--that's why he is sitting down!
He was NOT high..he had the flu! Shame on you!!
I saw Disturbed at Ozzfest in '00 in Dallas, their debut album The Sickness had only been out for about 5 months, I've been a fan since then.🤘🤘
This was awesome! Absolutely the best version of this song!
