  • A quick video on some PROs/CONs we have found while owing our Chevrolet Silverado 3.0L DURAMAX over the course of 6 months. Bottom line, we have been incredibly happy with the truck and it has suited our needs well, however it does have some CONs.
    In the next video, we will take a look at the truck and if its sustainable in the extreme cold and sub-arctic conditions.

    Did a full weight reduction on a Ecodiesel, I mean everything, mind blowing transformation, fuel milage through the roof, throttle response is violent and the best part the engine oil stays clean incredibly longer. No more empty plastic DEF jugs, no more codes.

      We're still waiting for those kits to be available for the Lm2. Probably mid summer early fall since full tunes are available. I wouldn't be surprised if I got close to 40 on the highway with mine. I still range 22-26 hand calculated at the pump with 4" lift, 35's on beadlocks and 2" spacers mostly stock. Only thing I replaced was that baffled air intake with a 3" aluminum intake, stock box.

    Diesels warm up best under load. Start it, idle it for about 5 minutes, and drive off with a light load on the engine 👍

      100% Aggree with that! Once we get moving it warms up super quick. I was really hoping it would kick into an elevated idle like the 6.6L but I havent seen or heard higher RPMs during autostart. I'd expect it to kick on after a few minutes, I'm doing more research into it as well. Learned a lot recently. It does kick into some special Cold Weather mode when its down to -30ish Farenheit. Waiting to get temperatures like it again here soon, hopefully able to capture it on video.

    Nice video. I have a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT with the 3.0 Duramax and it has almost 90k miles on it.. We live in Maryland and average about 27MPG. My truck uses about 6 gallons of DEF over 7500 miles. Try getting a Banks Pedal Monster with the iDash. S&B makes an awesome cold air intake. Combine that the PPE new intercooler. We have towed 8500lbs and the truck was getting around 17MPG. Banks is hoping to have the Derringer out by this summer. I am planning on getting one to help increase the horse power to weight ratio.

    • @CHASING_BUILDS

      I installed the S&B, and you can hear an audible difference, although power feels about the same. We will shoot for the 8500-9000 lbs range in a few months + payload; excited to see that, and how the truck handles, 15-17mpg would be nice pulling that kind of weight for 4k miles, haha

    Questions, 1. Are you using the block heater? 2. Did you pay the sticker price? Will you lose your warranty if you install after market parts? Thank you for going over your aftermarket parts AFTER YOUR REVIEW of the truck!!!!

    • @CHASING_BUILDS
      @CHASING_BUILDS  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! I appreciate the questions and watching my video! So for your first questions, YES I will always use the OEM block heater that comes with the truck or any vehicle during those cold nights and the additonal heating pads certainly help when temps drop below -20F. For the warranty, no it will not void the warranty. It is a very common practice in the aftermarket world, some dealers install a $900 "Winterization Package" on new vehicles before they are sold that include heating pags, trickle charger, battery blanket etc. Look into the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, this is the legal-side of how aftermarket parts will void or not void your warranty.

    Good video. Is it an LM02 or an LZ0? I have a Colorado with the 2.8, once I hit 200k I’m probably going to upgrade to one of these. My advice from having a mini diesel
    - I always use a fuel additive (Hotshots EDT)
    - Get diesel from a place with a good turn over of fuel, I go to places that are busy and a lot of commercial vehicles use
    - If not towing, I try and keep the DEF in my take about half, to avoid it going bad from just sitting in there. I go through 2.5 gallons of def every 3-4K. NEVER use the Peak Platinum in our trucks, it will put it into limp mode.
    - I have a Provent 200 catch can, to keep the intake and turbo clean. For you being the cold weather, I would be careful if you get one because the cold will create a lot of moisture and it can freeze, resulting in the crank case over pressurizing. The Provent had a relief valve built in to prevent this, so if you do get one I would 100% not get any other.
    Good luck with the truck, I’m sure it will last a long time if you take care of it.

    If you're going through def fluid it's definitely going through regen then. I've got 2500 6.6 Duramax it doesn't tell me it's regening I just know it idles higher and you can smell it and obviously exhaust is a lot hotter and engine compartment. Far as ik that's really only time mine uses def fluid or it doesn't hardly use any until it goes through a regen.

    Two things. You have gone through a regen. They on average go about every 400 miles when new. And less infrequent as you go. You probably just haven’t known that it was in regen. It doesn’t tell you. Some key signs are. Sudden drop in mileage and miles for tank to empty. And there is a slight smell. Mine just went through one. There is a guy on youtube who is datalogging Demonworks is the channel. And on my truck. The diesel was just a $995 option. Over the stock. The 5.3 was a $1200 option over stock.

    Something is wrong on DEF consumption. I have a 2020 LM2. YES, ALL DIESEL engines drink DEF when towing. EVERY BRAND THEY ALL DO. NONE is even close to drinking 5 gallons in 700 miles. I hope your inaccurate. If not you need to have truck looked at. I tow all the time. That consumption rate is insane.

      Norman, I hate to say it, but we topped off the DEF before our trip last weekend and went through half a tank of it after ~380 miles towing our 24' empty enclosed trailer, which is about 3500 lbs dry. Insane right. The truck is going into the shop in February for another issue (I'll discuss it in the next video), but I'll have them look at the DEF consumption.

    With diesel prices? I cannot make the math make sense. Just MGP cost vs gas alternatives

    • @CHASING_BUILDS
      @CHASING_BUILDS  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In my situation, owning a diesel works for us. On the highway and unloaded, the price per mile on gas is phenomenal! Gas makes sense when comparing the 5.3L, for example. Doing quick math for our area at the same gas station (Gas $0.15 per mi) / (Diesel $0.17 per mi). However, I spent a significant amount of time at idle; as such, I was going through fuel faster than with my diesel. Diesel engines have better-idling characteristics than gasoline engines and can idle much longer on the same amount of fuel. Another part of my justification was fuel consumption when towing. My 3.0L mileage hovers around 16mpg when towing, while my 5.3L hovers between 8-9mpg with a similar load. Generally, I fill up less often with Diesel, and I've found it to be an overall better experience. I have to also consider the purchase of DEF. Lots of valid view points on both ends.

    • @CHASING_BUILDS
      @CHASING_BUILDS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris, much apprectiate the input! Yeah that will be a headache when I cross that bridge. We will need to drop the transmission to replace the variable valve oil pump belt here in about 10 years. The belt is located at the back of the crankcase. Yeah, not the best design. But that will be something I wont have to worry about for awhile. I did want to ad that GM is confident enough about the new LZ0 Duramax engine’s reliability that it has extended its recommended inspection to 200,000 miles for the Oil Pump Belt.
      G

    • @ericf4985
      @ericf4985 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the time that belt needs replaced, the timing chains and guides will need to be replaced anyway. The belt actually may outlast the chains, they rarely last past 200k. And no, it’s not an “Engine”. It’s a day’s work. Doing them on the front is a pain as well. I would have liked to see it all be gear drive, but beggars can’t be choosers I guess.
