    Worked!! For all the people commenting here, cleaning the mode selector fixed my tape eating problem. I used electronic cleaner spray.

    I recently Bought my dad a "new" Sony VCR after his more modern Samsung DVD/VCR combo started eating tapes. He said to take it and throw it away. I'm like, 🤔... Now I have it sitting in my man cave for a possible repair. You sir just gave me hope in fixing it. If I do, it'll be in my living room.

    Another well-made video. Very interesting to see the inside workings of a VCR/DVD combo. Will set about opening up my Samsung DVD-V6700 to take a look and clean the heads and laser unit properly.

      Eating tapes is one of a few things. Usually the mode switch, or a clutch that isn't working properly.

    I have an old VCR from my grandfather, who bought the VCR in 1986. There is a huge difference between VCRs in the 80s and today. I bought a Funai combo unit in 2004, which broke just some years later. But the VCR of my grandfather is working fine after 30 years!I hope my VCR will last for many years.It is very sad that the world last manufacturer has stopped the manufacturing of VCRs.Maybe they will return, like the Vinyl record did.

    hiya, great repair as always your videos are brilliant and most informative, this transport looks very similar to the SONY SLV-SE 720 model which I have, and had some issues with, i had to replace the belt and the machine worked once again perfectly for months, then however the takeup reel stopped takeup I think it's the idler/clutch gear assembly has failed...
    Possibly the what happened was the 20 year old idler gear was not up to the new belt I fitted can the idler/clutch be replaced.... thank you

    OK, I’m impressed. Looks like you have the gift. My Sanyo combo player DVW-7100 DVD player is very sluggish when it works at all. The read feature may take several minutes before I can get the tray to open. Some of the control buttons do not appear to be working, and the motor sounds are very slow. Could the belt be shot? The VHS works great. I want to donate this player to charity but I need to fix it first. Thank you. You look like you found your niche.

    I have a Samsung VR375 that the tape no longer will play in, almost exactly like what happened with this one. I'm going to attempt to fix it in a couple weeks. Thing is from 2003, so 20 years old, and I have a ton of home VHS videos I need to burn onto DVDs. A new one of these is hundreds of dollars, Might as well just try to fix it myself! Wish me luck! If you were near me I'd just bring it to you, but you're in Canada and I'm in Texas! If you hear of a big explosion from some lady trying to fix her vhs/dvd player, it was probably just me!

    Interesting that on PCB you can see that it actually is DVD-VR357 model. I have a DVD-VR357 VCR part of which doesn't work and when i opened the mode switch it was compeatly different stile...there is no circular contacts but only four fixed contacts that seem to be somehow worked by top white plastic cover. I couidn't fix the VCR, it loads and treads the the tape then doesn't play, capstan motor doesn't rotate. I don't know if problem is the mode switch or something else.

    Very educational video. I do have a question, I have a Samsung VR357 DVD/VCR combo that was working just fine then all of a sudden when you press the DVD to open the DVD tray, it does nothing, it just said 'Open' all the time on the display screen - any idea what the issue might be? Note: I checked to see if it was the belt being broken and the belt is in tact (I can see it when I pry open the DVD tray manually. Also I wanted to ask if you repair DVD recorder(s) like the one in the video?

    Hi, I have a Sony combo unit with a similar mechanism (maybe the same) and I am having an issue where it won't go into full fast forward or rewind and it is slower than normal even in normal rewind or fast forward. I am thinking it may be an idler pulley but I don't see any tire, just gears. Any advice?

    I have a JVC HR-J658 and it seems to have a mode switch problem (the symptoms match what I've seen in your videos). Problem is: I can't seem to find the switch, but mainly because I don't see how to remove the whole mechanical part to get underneath. Do you happen to know how that's done? Think I just fixed my VR-357 model like this. Pretty much identical take down. Rotary switch had some build up in it. It was acting up between FF/Rewind/Play. Itd just stop and eject the tape after doing any of the above abruptly aka FF/Play...OR playing then FF then PLAY again. As well it wouldnt rewind the tape all the way to the beginning. But now it seems to be. Gonna do more testing and edit/report back to double check.
    EDIT: Yeah so far as I know it fixed it cleaning that rotary encoder piece. Just used qtips and some non chemical cleaning paste I have. As I said when I took that white round piece off there was noticable buildup in there.

    I have the same unit. The unit was "eating" the vcr tape i.e loading the tape, extending it to the drum, then stopping, and then the tape was caught up inside during "eject". I cleaned the heads, and then removed the chassis and removed and cleaned the encoder switch. there doesn't seem to be a contact switch on the underside of the plastic wheel (6:57) that pops out. Just plastic. At any rate, I reassembled, and now all the device does is turn on ("HI") then off ("BYE"). or turn on ("HI"), request "LOAD", accepts the tape with a little push, then shuts off with tape inside. I seem to have made it worse.

    Hi,
    On Samsung VR 8160 vcr the tape comes spilling out of one side of the pinch roller when you play a tape. This causes the tape to be rejected. I cleaned the pinch roller but it continues to do the same thing. In my thinking the pinch roller must be causing the problem. I tried to purchase a pinch roller but could not fine one. It looks like on this model the pinch roller is replaced along with a bracket assembly. Am I on the right track? Do you know of availability of this pinch roller assembly?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roland Fox Could be the bearing on the pinch roller is worn allowing it to tilt back and forth, or the bracket is bent. Most likely the pinch roller is bad.Another thing that can cause this is too much tension on the take up side. If the take up clutch for example is seized up due to lubricant drying up on the clutch assembly it will cause the tension to go to high, and this can not only stretch the tape but make it ride up the pinch roller and be damaged.

    Thanks for posting. I have same unit. The VCR is now eating tapes. I took cover off, hit play and I watched the tape move, but the right side of the tape was not moving, so the tape would bundle up in a mess. Could that be those little Tape sensors you were talking about? If so, how do I clean? I also tried rewinding and than the left side of the tape would not move.

    Great video and you did a good job finding the issue. I have one of these same units and my issue is that pushing the power button nothing happens, the unit will not power up. Looking at the power supply area I see that the 2200uf 16V cap has a domed top and know from past experience when I had a computer monitor that would not power up I replaced the domed caps and that fixed the issue. Do you think that the domed 2200uf 16V cap in the power supply area being bad could cause my unit to not power up, or would it be something else? Thanks any suggestions on what it could be.

    I join many in saying thanks so much. I followed this solution and while I’m glad I did that too, I’m still not able to get a vhs tape to load. It seems the front panel trigger doesn’t push in enough as tape is pulled in. It stays a moment and the panel isn’t open and then ejects. Any chance you’d have an idea for me…. Thanks again and stay healthy.

    all i can say is wow! i've been watching tapes for a couple of hours and it's really great to watch a master at work. thanks for sharing. I do have a problem also with a vcr/dvd combo that wants to shut down the power after only a few moments of running. once i turn it back on the tape backs out. the thing just won't run for any length of time before it shuts down! Maybe a hot power supply. I'm guessing only. Boy i loved that video you made. I made sure to subscribe to your great work. any help with my issue will save a bunch of us from the butchers at the repair shops arond here in Flint, MI. Magnavox, model ZV457MG9 A Made by Funai, in china of course and sold at wal-mart. thanks ahead of time for any suggestions that i can take on my own to fix this player/recorder. 4 year old grandson blew his mind out because we couldn't watch the "fox and the Hound" Friday night. John.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Fitch Check the rotation sensors. They can go bad, especially the optical ones.There are a few different designs, some are reflective, and read silver stripes on the bottom of the reel table, others shine a light through the slots in the skirt of the reel table. Basically they produce a pulse train that is monitored to make sure the reel is turning. If the LED gets dirty or weak the signal drops, and the machine thinks that the reel has stopped turning and goes into emergency stop.

    • @johnfitch657
      @johnfitch657 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +12voltvids I did find two small black sensors that appear to be lined up across from each other peeking through holes in the outside frame of where the tape would run when loaded. I am talking about the vcr side of the player unit, not the dvd side. Are there other sensors under the frame when you remove the vcr unit from the inside? Other than cleaning these sensors with a q-tip, is there another way that i can test these sensors? Is there something else other than the sensors that would cause this problem? Of course i don't have the equipment that you have and something all i can do is dismantle toe get to the items to clean. What do i need to electronically check these rotation sensors? Thanks 12voltvids!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Fitch To check the function of optical sensors you need to scope the output from the photo transistor side and watch for the changing pulse train. Should go from perhaps 3 or so volts to ground as the light is blocked and unblocked by the turning reel table.I did a service on a Toshiba DVD / VCR combo a few weeks ago and I showed the rotation sensors on the PCB so you can see what one type looks like.

    • @johnfitch657

      +12voltvids I just finished watching that video I believe. Is that the same one that was full of water? I did see what they looked like on the board. I believe they might just be dirty. The fan was quite loaded with almost black dust. Thanks for the reply. John.

    • @johnfitch657
      @johnfitch657 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +12voltvids I removed 5 screws from the reel table and when i tried to remove it to get the the PCB i could not. It appears that there are other screws coming from the bottom side of the PCB and are attached to a bracket that is holding the vcr unit to the board. Does that mean the dvd player also needs to be removed in order to remove the screws from the underside of the pcb? I didn't really no the problem could cause me to tear it almost completely apart. But i'll wait for now until i hear from you again. John

    I have a Samsung DVD/VCR combo and it's no problem to eat tapes which causes tape damages and the tape ruined it during playback due to some sort of creepypastas and "Agamemnon Counterpart" related effects.
    Funai VCR's are the worst when it comes to brands like Magnavox, RCA, Zenith, Emerson and other Funai products. Sony made better VCR's than Funai including the VHS VCR, and the original Betamax VCR.

With no spare part available (won't worth the part's cost anyway) I eventually epoxy-glued them back together. Later glued a washer on its back to reinforce it too.

      I was using the contact cleaner "Nutrol" but deoxit would have worked as well.

      Try cleaning the audio / control head. If it can't read the control track the counter will not advance. There are 30 frames per second so every 30 pluses from control head is 1 second. (25 for pal)

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mystarstudios I use NuTrol cleaner by MG Chemicals. This was originally a hydrocarbon based cleaner when first developed for the telephone industry for use in cleaning the old step by step and cross bar mechanical switches.It is registered with the Canadian food inspection industry for use in food processing plants so the stuff isn't a hazardous product now. Alcohols and lubricating / sealing oils is basically all that is in it. Does a good job. Been using it for about 40 years.

    • @12voltvids

      Well first you need to figure out why it is stopping, and that will require a good visual inspection to make sure that it tape isn't getting slack, or stopping and triggering a shutdown.

    What actually make a vcr a 2 head, 4 head or even a 6 head vcr?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Mke Hammond The number of heads refer to the number of heads on the scanner assembly, not the total number of heads. All VCRs have an erase head, and an audio/control track head, as well as an audio erase to clean up any noise left by the scanner before the linear audio is laid down. (and for dubbing sound)On the scanner (video / hifi) side there are anywhere from 2 to 10 heads.The most basic a 2 head. The size of the heads are cut to the track width to give the best performance for the given tape speed.For EP speed the track width is 22 microns. For SP the track width 68 microns.A 2 head machine needs 22 micron heads, and while there will work for SP speed, having a 22 micron track, and then a bunch of wasted space isn't going to do anything to improve the picture. So they have a dedicated pair of heads for the SP speed. That's a 4 head.For HiFi audio add 2 more, that is 6 heads.If you have an editing deck then you need to erase the video tracks at the frame level as opposed to well in advance of the scanner assy as the full erase head does, so that adds t flying erase heads.Mitsubishi produced a machine with dynamic tracking for smooth slo mo, and that added 2 special effect heads, for 10 heads on the drum, and of course a more expensive machine, and part to replace.I have one of those 10 head units, and there is a video of it on the channel.

      Ive seen many that claimed they were 4 heads, but really only had 2 straight acrossed from each other. Also seen a few that had 2 heads built into one but was rare. a 4 head should have them spread equally around the head drum, like a +, most newer ones only use 2 heads to save money. the more the better IMO for best picture and sound.
      I replaced/repaired hundreds of these in the 80s and 90s. then everyone threw them away when they bought dvd players in the 90s. lol

      WRONG.
      only the very first machines had 4 discrete heads. the rest of them mount 2 heads on the same mount. one had would have the sp a field head with the EP b field and the other side the sp b field with the EP a field. that way they could do still and slo-mo playback by single field. use the sp a field and the EP a field opposite the the b field sp followed by the EP b field. Panasonic called this feature double fine slo-mo. hi fi machines had a separate set of heads physically offset for the hifi audio track. there were also 3 head machines that would have an a field on one side and a b/a on the other so for freeze and slow the 2 a field heads were used. Sony did that a lot with betamax.

      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mke Hammond
      2 head were the cheapest. they used narrow heads regardless of speed. 4 heads had 2 cut for the 22 micron EP speed and 2 for the 68 micron sp speed.
      6 as some called it were 4 head machines with hifi sound. 8 were hifi machines with 2 additional heads to act as dedicated flying erase heads for good quality editing. 10 were used by edit machines that added 2 additional dynamic tracking heads that were mounted on piezo actuators that would move the head as the tape was run at variable speeds for perfect smooth slow motion and perfect high speed playback. I have a demo of a fast play tape done with one of these 10 head Mitsubishi HSU82 recorders.

    I'm skeptical of your gung-ho approach to screwing in screws. Screws that go into plastic bosses are very easy to cross-thread, so you should always be careful when screwing them back in. Always turn them counter-clockwise first until you feel the screw's threads drop/seat into the boss's threads, then turn them slowly clockwise to feel whether or not you're encountering unusual resistance which indicates you are cutting new threads into the plastic instead of being properly seated into the existing threads. Once you're sure the screw isn't cross-threading, then you can pick up the pace.
    I would be very irritated if I had someone repair something of mine and it came back with any cross-threaded screws.

      @12voltvids  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a reason I don't use a cordless screwdriver. When I spin in screws I can feel if they are going in correct. No cross threaded screws in my shop.

      BOB JER
      I have been hit twice by big time voltage. 30 000 from a picture tube that was running and 2400v from a running microwave. That was the dangerous one as the current was about 1 amp. That one threw me clear across the shop. Neither one was pleasant. About the most painful shock I ever encountered was when the police department got a new toy. A taser. They were demonstrating it on each other at a festival and one of my friends dared me to sample it. Since one of the cops doing the demos to each other was a friend of mine he agreed. They were using it in touch mode not shoot mode. 2 cops took my arms so I wouldn't fall and the 3rd touched my back with the probes. 3 2 1 zap. My legs disappeared. I tell you if you have ever experienced that you don't want to be running away and have one deployed on you for real. It looks funny when a criminal is taken down by one but I can assure you, that you remember the experience.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SHAILENDRA KUMAR Banjare When you say it is not playing the past 4o minutes, then I am assuming that the first part of the tape plays fine.I am thinking that perhaps you have a tension problem, or the pinch roller is wearing and the tape slipping, or you have a capstan motor problem and once it has run for awhile it starts to slow down. See where we are going? I need more information to understand what your problem is.

      thanks very much for replying sir...... what i want to tell u here is that the video starts jumping when the tape is nearing its end...........it will play properly from the start no problem whatsoever but if we fast forward to watch the last end for example if we want to watch the video of last 30 minutes then it strats jumping makes noisejust like we when we do fast forward in playback mode.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Prashant Kumar Banjare I would suspect from your description that it could be the mode switch, like I did on this one starting at 6:35. The mode switch tells the micro controller when to stop the loading motor. If that switch gets dirty, the contacts do not make a good connection, and can create errors that can either stop the load motor too soon or too late. This or course would result in the cam gear stopping out of it's correct position, and the cam gear controls all mechanical activity, including the application and release of the back tension arm, reel brakes, and the clutch that changes between low torque mode for play, and search, and full power mode for full on FF and REW.Many mechanical problems that are not as a result of physically misalignment, or broken parts are caused by dirty mode encoder switches.

      +Bill Leist I used to work in a service shop. Left that live of work in 2003. Now am an electrician for a telecom. Worn on outside plant and at customer premise. The electronic repairs is more a hobby now. People still look me up, and bring me stuff to work on. I like the old school electronics more than new stuff. Analog circuits, there are many variables, and lots of individual parts that can be diagnosed and replaced. I like the old VCRs. just because they are cool. Sure the picture wasn't the greatest compared to what we have now, but there is just something cool about taking an electrical signal, and writing it onto magnetic tape. It seems so simple, but in reality, a VCR was one of the most complex pieces of electronic equipment ever invented. Many might argue, but think about it. You have an analog signal, you need to get onto tape, and then need to read that signal back from tiny little stripes on a flexible media that is slowly moving. You have electronics, and mechanical mechanism moving in harmony. A hard drive also is a marvel of electro mechanical technology.

      The fact that when they where being designed they couldn't figure out how to fit all the info on the tape and just by tilting the head is amazing to me.
