One thing (as a beginner) I've always been confused about, was how to create the extensions. Watching this video and your style of teaching, the light bulb finally came on, and now I understand.... Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The reason you have the #11 (F#) on the major is because it don’t clash with the major 3rd ( E) . Yes, it is a Lydian sound but don’t worry about that , it’s more important that you know it’s because of the clash with the major third (E) that we sharpen the 11th. Now for minor chords because the third is minor (Eb) then there is no clash with the 11th (F) so there is no need to sharpen it. For Dominant chords which have a flattened 7th, because the chord already sounds dissonant then it doesn’t make much difference when you add more dissonant notes, that’s why you can add flat9, sharp9, flat 13, sharp 13 etc to a Dominant chord but never for a major chord.
Nicely done my man...I seriously learned from this... ALWAYS been wanting too and searching before, but couldn't figure it out...you made a great tutorial video! Thanks!
Since I currently learn and play by ear, I use the 2, 4, and 6 as landmarks, to instantly know where the 9, 11, and 13 is in any major scale. As far as modes and scales, I'm still learning them. I know the names but don't have shortcuts or landmarks to remember them all...yet
Nice one man. I found that once i practice all my major scales and know them with the right fingerings to the core, learning modes become easy. All you gotta do is, for each mode u try to identify, figure what scale degree its based off, then find what scale has your desired note as the corresponding scale degree. For example, say i want to figure out c lydian, first i ask myself what scale degree is lydian based off. Thats would be the 4, all i do is find what major scale has c as its four and that would be G, then i play the g major scal with my starting and ending note being c not g. Hope it helps
I just LOVE Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Erikah Badu, for the feel. Didnt know that was calles Neo Soul. Also George Benson, Angie Stone, Ntjam Rosie. Wonder if they all are neo Soul too! Thanks for explaining :)
Man, can this guy yack. Check this out, I washed the car, mowed the lawn, went grocery shopping, bought a new set of tires, jogged for 30 minutes and had open heart surgery. When I came home after a week in the hospital, I checked in on him and he still hadn’t gotten to the F major chord yet. WHEW!!! Dang can this guy talk!! He must have a deal with TH-cam where he’s paid by the syllable!
Wow, this was a fantastic lesson! Ended up with a couple questions that I hope someone can answer: 1. What is the most efficient way to practice licks? And also, what is the difference between licks and runs? 2. You had a sharp I chord in the first progression and I didn't understand why the rootless A9 (13) #11 works. Is it because its only a half step away so it can be used as a passing chord to get back to the I? 3. When do you decide to make a voicing rootless? Is it just a matter of taste? 4. The second progression (the Robert Glasper) song had a G Minor 11 and I didn't get why that worked in the progression. Is it the same situation as the A9 (13) #11 where its a half step away from the V so we can use it as a passing chord? 5. You said something about how in Neo Soul its very common to substitute a vi with a flat VII (Bb Maj 9(13) used in a C Major progression). I'm not sure if I understood this correctly. Are you saying it can replace a vi in a progression or that it follows a vi usually? Thank you for this amazing lesson!
#3 i wonder as well. As far as 2 and 4, you are right. Half step away is a good passing to get to a I, a V, really any chord. In theory, its a tritone substitution for the V of the target chord. substitutions of this tyoe are coming from the phrygian scale.. i think. This is why i wish this would be taught more theoretically. The benefit of learning theanguage of modes, which many of us have, is that any style can be molecurlaly and fundementally understand from this way, not just a few licks here and there.
Bro.. great stuff. But please dont hold back assuming that we are not ready for advanced explanations. There badly needs to be a theoretical explanation of neo soul, its a very under theorized subject matter. Many of us who are thirsting for the understanding need to approach it theoretically because this is how we got here. We already thinking in modes. Apporaching it from a modes standpoint woul help in a way that we'll have the fundemental understanding. The way you and many are explaining, in this practical way, which is still very much appreciated, only leaves us able to mimick a few techniques. Give us the modal theory so we can go about our business and get to practicing what is personal to each of us. Trust me, we are ready. What is it, the melodic mode? The altered scale? Give up the secret.
man thank you so much for those golden tips ,you gave me a started point ,wanted to dive in this style since a long time but i was impressed by all the dissonance and the feel that you can go wherever you want in a way in that style ,it make more sense for me now i would like to know more abou the rythmic pattern in this style ? and i don't know if it s just me but i couldn't ear clearly all your progression on the video :/ anyway ,thank you for your time ,force from paris :)
damn man I loved this tutorial but I found when you were showing the chord progressions the volume on your keyboard tanked! So it was hard to follow those parts... but other than that incredible. Thanks for being so in depth~
Zombie Gambino Thanks for watching! I’m still trying to figure out the best live platform to teach with but check out our pre recorded lessons. We have plenty of Neo Soul theory lessons & song breakdowns. The audio is great on those 👍
Amazing vdieo! I just have two questions: 1) How do you when the best time is to "think as if you're in another key"? 2) When is the best time to use rootless voicings? (especially when there is no bass player?)
Man, there are adds every two minutes on Ur video. i get that people need to make some money out of whatever they share, but this is making it impossible to follow or to appreciate the content.
Was looking forward to an hour and half tutorial on neo soul until I heard your keyboard. Why would you still release this it simply isnt picking up the keys audio properly
When you get used to just watch tik tok and reels, you lose the ability to pay attention for something larger than a 1 minute irrelvant but stimulant video. Focus is the best resource you have, don't waste it. The real information cannot be reduced to what the little brains are willing to consume. Train your brain, a real clases wont last one minute. Learn to focus will improve your life.
Naaah my friend. Please show the chords only by playing the piano.. your piano-app shows all chords very well. Probably all pianists who wanna step into NEO SOUL they know how to count up to 7/9/11/13 and how to use # (sharp) and b (flat). So you need not to count up note by note at every chord... this makes your demonstration slow and strenous and boring after a while. There are thousand tutorials for beginners to learn that basics. But MY real problem is... my left arm is lamb and I'm able to play one bass note with my left thumb. Therefore I have to split an extended chord i my head into Left & Right. This means for example: you play Fmaj9 - i have to split this in my head into (R) Amin7 and (L-Bass) F. So I can play some extended chords. And now I'm searching tutorials with chord progressions I can write on paper and amend them into my possibilities... Good luck, Jesus loves us :)

The trick with dominant chords is you must keep the third and the seventh but you can alter and add any other note !

Bru, J Dilla is not a neo soul producer.
True, but he did produce for Neo Soul artist like Erykah Badu & D’Angelo.
He created the neo soul style and feel. He was making this sound way before all the other artist that were mentioned lol.
