The Fundamentals of Neo-Soul Keyboard is one of the hottest and most coveted DVDs every made. Let's face it, musicians love neo-soul, because it is a genre that posses the smoothness of soul; the improvisational creativity of jazz; the grit of hip-hop; and the head-bobbing phenomena of funk.
You can't get these chords with your neighborhood piano teacher. These chords are "secret" chords that the streets possess and are shared only in underground basement shed sessions. For the first time, these secret chords will be exposed for all of it's funky glory. You get a little over an hour of the phattest neo-soul chord progressions that you hear on the radio or from your favorite neo-soul artists. We spent time in the studio showing the movements, then we took time to chart out all of the movements in a nice score. You get the MIDI files for your tracks and for your virtual MIDI viewer such as MIDIculous. Finally you get tons of theory booklets and resources so that you actually understand what you are playing. The notations are so easy to follow and very simple to understand.
From coming from a gospel background, we can all agree that musicians love neo-soul and these concepts that we teach can be applied to every urban genre of music from gospel to R&B. If you are looking to finally make some smooth grooves with your tracks and become an urban producer, then this DVD will give you all the tools to produce your first album. If you are getting a little bored with the same chords you've been playing all the time, now it's time totally transform your style by adding a touch of neo-soul to your keyboard playing!.

Yo I just tried to buy this video off the website and it wouldn't let me. Help me out, Doc!
The world could use a little bit more of this guy.
“Vibe is more important than key in Neo-Soul!” Woohoop 💥🎯🙌🏿💯
This bassist is crazy 8:15 😂😂😂😂 I came for the chords but I stayed for the bass
This is the first time ive seen a tutorial with live accompaniment. These guys rule
If you ain’t waving your whole body to this shit, then you ain’t human.
He just gotta talk over his production, and it still sounds like it's part of the track.
This is the most underrated music tutorial video on the whole internet - thanks man, lots of love from the UK
This guy cracked neosoul
Those minor 9 chords really create a special vibe. This sound reminds of the chord progressions heard in Nas' "The World is Yours" or Black Star's "Thieves in the Night". Classic sound.
This is the absolute dirtiest, cheapest trick you could teach.
I love it.
My man on the bass on next level🔥
Them boys was getting ready to groove !
phenomenal bass player
True! Giving Pino feels.
It's awesome to see the bass player smile when this guy plays some funky changes
Basically Erykah Badu's entire first album lol...I know this is earlier material from years ago but I just want to thank you brother J for your fiery enthusiasm for the creative process of real music across several genres. I have sampled your stuff quite a bit over the years and it always end up being FIRE!!!. I appreciate you brotha, keep inspiring us and guiding us... peace and blessings.
James Poyser my man !!!
I stopped trying to learn. was just jamming lol!!
Fam !!!!😎
Lol. Trying to do both at the same time! Ain't working! Gotta jam first then I'll be able to apply his techniques.
You know it, bet you got the stinkface to 😁😝🥴😖😫
Same here 😂

so many channels for music theory seem like filling in the time with nonsense, with only basic explanations of the more complex concepts. this one really feels like someone wanting to share their knowledge! thanks for the lessons!
amen!
frfr
When I realized I was lost, I just decided to enjoy the sweet sounding chords.
I love that dissonant move from the Cmin9 to the Amin9. It reminds me of some of the nice chords you get by accident if you drop a chord into a sampler and then jump between points on the keyboard.
Dang man, that bass player is amazing dude.. This kat is bananas.. The whole video is outstanding.. Man, ya'll kats nice man..
rhythm section killin it ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
this is exactly what ive been looking for!!! mad robert glasper vibes all over this
This groove hit 5:10 and the bassist entrance lick, simple yet cold
Yezzirrrr
this man just performed sorcery right before my eyes
“The vibe is more important than the key”- this is so true and helpful for me, a classical girl who’s trying to break out of the rules.
Thanks for listening :)
That bass run at 13:36🔥
5:43 He almost played the lick right there
If you go to 13:25, he finishes the other half of the lick.
Hell yeah nice catch adam would enjoy this
There is such a good vibe in this video holy sht
This was an EXTREMELY influential video for me and after years & years of study I finally understand why this concept was so confusing to me at first:
At 3:35 when he says the Bb scale over the C is a "Aeolian or a Mixolydian type of scale," I think what he really means is it's a DORIAN type of sound. He's playing minor 9s in parallel motion based off of the dorian mode. So when he has the band jamming in a minor groove, he just plays the DORIAN mode over top but makes each chord voicing a minor 9. I've heard this referred to as "chord planing" before. It makes sense then because Dorian is the second mode and that's why he refers to the Bb Major scale as a base. Just another way of looking at it (and it's probably easier than learning modes, honestly). But this is why it always works so well - Dorian is commonly used in place of the natural minor scale. So if a rhythm section is grooving on any minor vamp, a keyboardist could shed dorian over top of the whole thing and then also build minor9's off of each note. It's really genius in its simplicity.
Thank you so much Jamal for keeping music theory so interesting to me over the years!!!
Correct ;)
Nah I believe he was correct because we’re talking C minor here. If it was C major you’d be right but because it’s minor, that shift to the Bb would actually be Mixolydian. Bb major = C Dorian, Bb Mixolydian = C Minor
David Wright yeah but he’s playing a B flat major (Ionian) scale when he’s speaking in that particular moment, so it’s definitely C Dorian. What’s clear is that he’s not really interested in being perfectly accurate with which mode he’s using, he’s just thinking about a parent scale (seems like he’s always referencing some major scale) and then just builds minor 9 and minor 11 chords open each of those notes. His lacking in theory chops may very well make his teaching less clear than it could be, but he more than makes up for it with his infectious enthusiasm and very down to earth/practical approach.
@@BryWMac it´s not what he says, it's what he plays, listen de voicings, look at his fingers, he is playing dorian, if you can´t notice it you need more studying
Yes indeed it is a C Dorian mode but once you start building min 9ths on each degree of the Bb maj scale, tonality becomes increasingly blurred since now all 12 tones of the chromatic scale have come into play. What's even more interesting is that although there is no clear tonic, once you play through all the min 9ths off of the Bb maj scale, there is actually one spot that feels like "home" or has some semblance of a tonic. That's the Gmin9 chord which is coincidentally the relative minor of Bb maj and since we're dealing with minor chords, it's quite possible to hear G Aeolian as the tonic. To test it out, start the sequence of min 9ths on Cm9 and end on Cm9 then start the sequence on Gm9 and end on Gm9. Which one sounds like "home"? The sequence on G is actually quite pleasant. A close second would be a sequence starting on the Dmin9 chord which also sounds pretty good as a tonic. Of course now you'd be going through a different mode, D Phrygian.
The best thing yet is that although Jamal lacks in traditional theory, there's no doubt he knows these relationships by ear as he's an excellent musician. And the kicker is he needs none of this since he forces Cm9 to become the tonic by starting on Cm, then playing a moving chord sequence, then falling back on Cm. Not trying to get deep on everyone here with all this theory, just very curious and i have a few of Jamal's dvd's and learned some great stuff from him.
Man this video is a classic
if your here from 10+ years back, ya'll know this our father right? Used to type in Dwele chord progression in YT and this guys vids would most all the time be on my feed. Bless him, taught me a lot.

Right, he was gone for a while. I know I wasn’t trippin.
That bass is nice ! It's awesome that you have them play a beat, so you can explain your theory. : )
hands down one of my fav youtube videos of all time thank you for this brother.
This is insanely accurate, and anybody that disagrees doesn’t listen to enough neosoul
After every few months, I come back here. Absolutely beautiful! 7:23
me too 😂😂...awesome
If vibing was a smile, this would be it. Love it
the beauty in this is that ive already been playing like this but it was unbeknownst that this was the mentality behind it. made life 10x simpler
I don’t know shit about music reading, just been playing by ear and this is what I’ve been doing myself for couple years now. I’m glad it’s finally said
The word "informative" is not enough to describe the knowledge in this. Also, definition of "less is more". Thank you! 🙏
this is amazing content for experienced musicians. I love that this is and feels like you're in a room with these dudes and soaking it in. Nothing substitutes hearing great musicians in a room.
I usually write darker stuff in boring ol' minor, spicing up a few things with 7 and 9 chords, or sometimes working in other modes or scales entirely... But if neo-soul doesn't have a vibe, I don't know what does. I doubt I'd ever be able to make something groove and vibe as smooth as this, but it was so nice to listen to.
chicago/uk/bk drill music.....try it out. Ignore the subject matter and pay attention to how the production has evolved from 2012 to now.
It would fit you.
Peep Ellis Tru's beats on youtube (nah I'm not him nowhere near that level of skill...)
@@Meta4ce UK drill has always, and will always be fire. I'll definitely do some additional research, cheers!
Just realized I was playing neo soul for a year now whiteout realizing I'm playing it cause I always rely on the groove and the vibe more than relying on chords logic and scales thinking that way made me play more freely
Your awesome. Your crew jams. Thanks.
I've been trying for a long time to find something new to jam with (chord wise), and your video hit it right on the button . THANKS, THANK YOU GUYS. I can't THANK YOU , and YOUR CREW enough. This is heaven sent. thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
This was the most epic tutorial ever
You could not explain this any simpler. I remember seeing this the first time it came out.
Not only the lesson is great, but you my friend, are naturally so groovy. I smiled from start to finish, thank you.
The Drummer was fire I like it
Wow. You were sent from heaven.
First off, this lesson was amazing.
Second off, your energy is vibrant and seeing someone happy and excited about teaching is probably the best thing ever. The passion radiates to us, the learners!!!
Hey man, rad video! You guys really groove well together. As a small bit of advice, I think you should specify the intervals of those minor 9s for us beginners because it looks a lot like you're playing inversions/interesting voicings. For instance the Cm9 chord you play at 0:43, the intervals are 1-5-b7-9-b3-5 or C-G-Bb-D-Eb-G. The 9 and b3 (D and Eb) played right next to each other adds tension in the middle of the chord. Doubling up on the 5th adds consonance/balance. That's why I think Neo Soul is so cool. Cause you could easily play a Dm9 by playing every other white key from D up to E (block voicing style) but it's the recipe that makes it special
First scale I learned back in 6th grade was that Bb scale. Used it for at least 30 or 40 tracks I threw out for my friends and their projects. Never knew it could be applied in even more contexts, particularly in some of my favorite music. I like this guy a lot. Opened up some doors in such a short amount of time.
Can I hv the scales

Beats by Nimuz if you don’t really want to be a player 😂 these kind of posters just post easy ass shit to make people think they can play, and if you can’t play at all!! You will watch and watch until you learn that easy shit. Then you probably will lose interest all together😂, it’s a scam for views

You fail to realize that this is from an old instructional dvd they released over 10 or 15 yrs ago and was only the 1st chapter for beginners. Further chapters on the same dvd get progressively harder with major 9ths, 11ths, 2 handed voicings, left hand voicings, fills, chord theory, etc.
For the people new to GM, this is just one lesson from the Neo Soul instructional course available on the site. This course changed my whole Neo Soul approach
Man you're the dude, your knowledge AND your enthusiasm are what drew me to your channel years ago. Love your style bro. similar to mine. Love to see musicians play that actually LOOK like they're hyped and excited about what they're doing. I'm a 64 year old private educator(keyboard), full time musician/artist/producer/composer and arranger 24 years this month. Enthusiasm, and passion have been one of the cornerstones of my instruction. Keep doing what you're doing young blood. Your videos are required listening/watching for my students that study jazz with me. I have many of your products from Urban and Contemporary Extreme to Midiculous to Neo Soul Keys, and more. Thanks for what you do. Oh yeah that minor 11 chord either open or closed voicing is a beast to. Here's a little something cool for an open minor 11 chord if your hands can make the stretch. I use this chord a lot. Worth learning in every key as I'm sure you already know. Here it is. D minor 11 Left hand D A E Right hand F C G (Note: Left hand begins w little finger on D1 then up perfect 5th to A index finger, then up another perfect 5th to E with thumb) (Right hand thumb on F literally right next to the E of left hand thumb, then a perfect 5th above F to C with index finger, then another perfect 5th above C to G played with little finger. My piano tuner showed me that voicing over 30 years ago. I did all of the explanation more so for the sake of your viewers than you. Peace and blessing to you.
Haha nice, I called this one out just a week ago th-cam.com/video/ueBQpSCUtKs/w-d-xo.html
Love the sound of it!

The Essential Lesson!
Of course for a real effect, one should play his minor 9 the way Jamal does his chords.
And groove it his way too 🙂
If you play Bb scale over Cmi9 you playing what is called Dorian . Go listen to Miles Davis 1959 album Kind of Blue and you will hear lots of this sound.
Would you be in C Dorian?
Yes, C Dorian. Dorian is 2nd mode of Bb major scale.

as a guitar and trumpet player, i envy keyboard players so much. Keys are totally made for neo-soul!
Gman44044 guitars are good too for neo soul unless u have basic skills. Go check some videos from funky man If you can read tab and notation, Ted Pritchard, or beau diakowikz are good too
@@falikoufofana7740 I don't think you understood my comment, im not denying guitars can't be used for neo-soul. keyboards just offers more depth in exploring these genres. Even with classical music, playing fugues and counterpoints are much more suited for keyboards / piano.
And yes, Beau diakowikz is one of my all time favorite guitarists. You got "Todd" Pritchard's name wrong btw (ouch)
Go check out Anomalie if you haven't already, you'll understand what I'm talking about.
minor 9 chords can go anywhere. They have two minor triads and a major triad and that maj7 in them. I use them as a really tense transition chord on keys sometimes. I mostly play guitar though, and playing a m9 on guitar with decent voicing ain't easy without alternative tunings.
