    Trick 4: don’t play the butter notes

    • @NoahKellman
      @NoahKellman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      LOL exactly man! I guess trick 1 was sort of "don't play the butter chords," but those butter notes are important too

      Noah Kellman very nice video and now I got the very foudation idea of that neo-soul chord progressions which made my mind so 🤯🤯🤯 thank you so much for this very informative content. But may I ask a question? What do you mean when you say butter note? 😅

    • @williamguzman7488

      Anthony Sorongon watch WIRED’s video on Harmony, it’s explained in the last 5 minutes.

      @@anthonysorongon1075 Yo man nobody gave you an informative reply lol. "Don't play the butter notes" is a phrase which Miles Davis said to Hancock and by saying it he basically meant 'avoid the obvious notes' ie have fun with the extensions and play some cool voicings :)

    I feel like this same approach can be used for testing any idea of a chord progression in your head; not just soul :) This was a great presentation and you made it super simple to understand.
    Just think of a melody that isn't super volatile, and then start testing different chords/voicings where the leading note is whatever the current note in your melody is.

    Newbie here. For the first tip: I don’t quite understand why the substitutions of the I work (the Eb Major 9).
    What is the relationship of G and F in the melody that makes it
    okay to resolve on those substitutions that have the F (like the A Sus or Dm11 for example)?
    So this is basically breaking away from the V - I right? But why does it still feel resolved even
    though it isn’t the I?

    • @pete3816
      @pete3816 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn’t feel resolved. It might feel ok, but not resolved. It’ll only feel fully resolved when you recognise a return to the tonic.

    Hi, does your ‘Jazz Styles: Neo Soul’ cover a theory or a kind of principles of neo soul with piano? Since there’s no free samples or list of contents in your website where I found Jazz Styles: Neo Soul, I leave a comment here.

    Super random comment alert: I'm listening to your videos while I'm at work - as I normally do now - and right now I'm just wondering if you've got a video on how to play keys like Steely Dan? I know you do videos like that and this is not one of them. Hence the random comment disclaimer.

    I think you need to tell your viewers that neosoul is for electronic instruments only, like Nord Stage and Yamaha. Motif series. It does not work on acoustic pianos as many neosoul chordsxcause too much interference that sounds like noise. This is caused by imperfect tuning, pianostrings for one note not being perfectly the same, and the richer frequency structure if a tone from the sounding board of the harp of the acoustic piano.

  • @stever1514
    @stever1514 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's funny that when you move the progression in parallel it sounds like it's coming out of old sampler, or a patch from Emu's Mo Phatt. I guess that’s how these sounds made it into the style originally.

  • @C12389

    Pretty voicings yes, but need you now to spell out more of right hand single line activity between voicings - and thanks.

    The exercise sounds great using the standard acoustic 🎹 patch on your Nord. I have a Casio 76 note WK200 workstation. So, I'm thinking it would be interesting to try this exercise with a warm pad synth patch. This tutorial has helped me better understand how and why reharmonization works the way it does Thanks Noah fr Will in VA

    Wht a bullshit , without musical context . The use of progressions should depend on the message / story you want to tell.

    In relation to the the key of Eflat major, couldn't the Dmin be the the 7th chord in lydian by dropping the Aflat? Or are you thinking of it more as a modulation to Dminor ?

    Dear me! So he announced he was going start simply, having played a G, I thought he was then going to play a G chord, and build up from there. Nope! He goes for Bb13 - and then Eb Maj 9! And I am lost! Sure, I'll persevere with this, because the mellow sounds are lovely, but it's going to be uphill, and really slow!

    Geez man, this is a great tutorial very helpful! Two thumbs up from me. One thing though, we need more ACTUAL soul music tutorials rather than NEO soul music tutorials. Sure, neo soul was created out of soul music but ultimately was derived from Hip-hop. And this is coming from a Hip-hop producer here, Hip-hop samples actual soul music and if we want that iconic Boom Bap Hip-hop sound then we can't be using neo soul techniques. And this isn't even speaking for the actual soul producers, they might be actually upset about this kind of thing. But for real this is a good tutorial none the less. Just something to keep in mind the next time you post y'know?

    This is amazing!! Very easy to understand coming from a classical background. Also I need your advice if it's not much of a bother. I studied classical piano for 5 years since I was 10 but havent touched the instrument since after that. I want to play the keys again but this time Jazz, i love jazz so much but my parents forced me to play classical back then. What would one do to be able to transition smoothly while taking into consideration years/decades of having not played the piano. Thanks! Subscribing.
