Building a Drying Rack for Vegetables - The Project List - Our Wyoming Life

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 16 ก.ค. 2018
- When rained out of the hay field, we like to keep projects in our back pocket that we can get done in a half a day. This is one of those projects that Erin has been waiting for years for and we finally get to make her day.
A vegetable drying rack is used to dry just washed vegetables prior to packaging. Speeding up the process of air or hand drying.

Join us on our journey as we leave a life in corporate america to come back to Wyoming and help on the family ranch.
Our Wyoming Life features our Wyoming ranch and our ranch family. Giving you a look into the workings of ranching from raising cattle to raising and farming and harvesting crops. Erin will join you weekly out of the garden, showing you how she helps provide for our family through growing produce and selling at local farmers markets, and growing your own food. Mike will take you along as he tends to the animals and land of ranch, from calving to fencing to planting and harvesting hay.
Points awarded! "A present for me?!"
haha, I'll take them Thanks - Mike
I still can not believe you did not come from a construction back ground vs radio. I can not imagine you sitting inside for 8-10 hours a day. Thanks for sharing this weeks project.
good on ya mate, happy wife, happy life. we got 70mph winds and about 3 large drops of rain. Irrigation was like watering a sponge this morning.
Wow, I bet it was. Sorry to hear, I have been there - Mike
It's all about the Brownie Point. Spot on build! You put Ikea to shame
haha, thank you very much - Mike
Great job Mike! Time for me to go too because my garden is not getting tended to if I am sitting here watching these excellent videos LOL. Time for me to go to work too. Have a great day and give the cows a pet for me. 🐮😁
lol, dont let us hold you up from your work, we would help if we could. :) - Mike
All ads will be watched in full Mike.
Thank you very much - Mike
Well done, sir! I do get the notion that you will get to try your hand again on Drying Rack 2.0!
I believe so. Erin will want more I'm sure Thanks Tom - Mike
Hey Mike ,I am sure Erin was over the moon with your thoughtful suprise maybe you can teach my partner a thing or two LOL.😀 . This weather is rapidly changing more rainfall or not enough here in Australia where I live more colder winters and later summers terrible droughts inland that can last years. Our farmers are struggling and then when ithey finally do receive rain the earth is so compacted that the water doesn't soak in and just washes away the top soil its a definite worry world wide .
Peace and blessings to my favourite Wyoming family.
Thank you very much, Erin is thrilled with it and its always better late than never. The weather is odd all over it seems this year. Hopefully it gets straightened out! - Mike
Love the concept! Maybe add a few more shelf’s so she can dry even more!
You must have been reading Erin's mind, the idea is in the works. Thanks - Mike
Great idea on that drying rack Erin looked happy so project was successful
I put a piece of painter’s tape on the power strip. Draw or poke out the holes, carefully pull the tape and move it to where you will be mounting the power strip.
Good idea, oh yea and make sure the screws you use will fit in the little holes. Been burned by that one. Thanks Jesse - Mike
Nice build Mike. What a wonderful hug im sure you both needed.👍
Love your videos. You have great livestock mike and erin. The ranch is a credit to you both
Thank you Paul - Mike
Awesome idea with the fans. Good luck with the hay. Watch those ditches! LOL! Looks like Erin got some sun!
Mike, one way I mount power strips is to remove 2 screws diagonally from the back, drill with 1/8 bit.
Attach with drywall screws.
Nice project. Well done Mike.
Thank you very much - Mike
I hope the rain bumps the crop in production to eliminate buying hay this year. Good luck with the tonnage and weather. Great project and how to upload.
Awe! It might have been a honey do but it looked more like an "I love you". 💕💕💕
Mike you need to put a piece of ply wood on the bottom that way you can lay under it while the vegetables are drying so the cool water will cool you off
A little trick to get the holes just right on the power strip Mike, If you have a copy machine you can take a photo copy of the back of the strip, then you will see exactly where the holes need to go and leveling the strip is easy (other wise just lay a piece of paper on the back of the strip and use a icepick or something sharp to mark the holes then transfer those holes to the wood.
Build looks great and your work will very much lighten the load on Erin and the kids, I enjoy seeing Mackenzie helping out (she's so sweet).I Enjoy the vlog more everyday, blessings to the family and the ranch-Jerry
This works like a treat. We keep a stack of templates we've made this way in our service vans. I've also found 3M Hi-Tack works really well for sticking the templates onto various surfaces too.
Thank you very much! I have heard of that but honestly I didnt feel like bringing it back into the house lol . Thank you very much Jerry - Mike
Fuckin genius
Love the belt buckle
Thanks Chase! - Mike
You the man Mike.
Thank you Brian, but I'm sure many say the same about you! - Mike
Cool Beans! I think in v2 (or the next one you build) or even this one, I would add plexi sides to make more of a "chimney" so that the air is not "wasted" out the sides and it is all concentrated upwards. And maybe you could even add another shelf?
Makes perfect sense. Thanks a bunch - Mike
AWESOME BLOSSOMS🌻
Thanks Betty - Mike
Mike, Hi. I like this project. Anything related to wood working like this catches my attention. I DO have one negative comment about it however. In the last 15 years or so, I have used power strips like the one you have there for various low powered uses. I have used about 4 of them total. In a very few years (perhaps 4 years) I have had 3 of them short circuit on my at the switch. Those switches just don't seem to have much durability. They seem to be more useful for computer applications where they are rarely turned off. I finally gave up on them and have changed over to an attached, hard-wired outlet with a regular light switch in line with it. These have lasted safely and well for years without any problem. Good luck with it but, for me, I don't want to attempt it anymore. Please keep in mind also the safety factor of turning it on or off with possible wet hands from handling the crops. BE SAFE Regards, Ron
Thank you Ron, I wondered about the quality of it as well but we will see. I'm sure we will need a new one at some point lol - Mike
Your drying rack looks like all the other ones out there. Good job
Next is turning a washing machine into a salad spinner .
Keep an eye out for a free one. Just need the spin cycle .
That's really cool! Hope all is well with the cows and everything else on the farm! I agree with you, time is definitely priceless! Great video as always!
Thank you very much, all is good :) - Mike
Mike you did a good hope it scored you a lot of brownie points. Maybe Erin will ask grandma to keep the kids all night one night this week so you too can an evening alone. LOL Erin the best looking gardner in wyoming I don't see how you stayed bent over like that harvesting the lettuce and other vegetables I have back problems first I have lower back pain if I bend over for more than a minute or 2 also I have a real bad problem with sciatica some days worse than others when it gets bad I really can't do much of anything. Thanks for sharing guys. Mike if only all this rain would of came in march and april I'M sure it would of help the hay situation. Hope it stops raining long enough for you to get the hay cut and baled. Have a great day. See you thursday. God Bless!!!
Thank you very much sir. Yea the rain would have been nice earlier but we will take what we get. The minute you start complaining too much about rain then mother nature gets vindictive! - Mike
Great job, brownie points.
They are good. Thanks - Mike
Just found your channel recently , really enjoy the videos ,lot of work to feed us all
Thank you Mike and thanks for watching, glad you found us - Mike
I really enjoyed watching this video. That was something special to see .
Thank you, long over due. :) - Mike
Your certainly a Jack of all trades Mike and you certainly make a great job of inventing solidly built construction's you've made on your channel👍 you could add master of surprises on your list aswell. 😁 as for the great title of videos, well,,,, you and Erin can fight over for that title or just share it would be best.🙂 as for educationally comedy videos, you know who that should go to. Possibly for the most brake downs on his truck!!!! 😂
When I see your name I make sure there is nothing I can spew on my computer!
hahaha, Calum you should get an award as well - Mike
For the pain in the butt power strip: A piece of blue painters tape or masking tape across the power strip, sharpie the keyholes - transfer the tape to the board/wall and drill.
Hi good 🌃 night
Mike and Erin, always a pleasure being here on the project list . Good 🌃 night Mackenzie hope you're having a great night give Bambi a great big hug for me. Enjoyed as always appreciated till the next

Our Wyoming Life you're welcome my friendliest friend Mackenzie have lots of fun today sending lots and lots of love from Barbados. 💕💕💕💕💕💕
Hi Mike...Yeah, I checked the weather for you folks today and thought...dang, Y'all must be grinding your teeth...you do have some clear days coming soon though. And what a nice guy, rather than get down about the weather, you went out and did a very thoughtful thing to make Erin happy....and her hug and smile had to make you happy too...a touching episode. Thanks for sharing... Terry Justin Texas
Thank you sir. Ya cant get down, just move forward. :) - Mike
What an awesome surprise for Erin. Pretty good carpenter I’d say. You can always make another if you need more drying area. Best part was the hug at the end. Good luck with the hay and all the rain you’re getting.
Thank you very much, been an interesting summer thats for sure. - Mike
Nice Build
Thank you very much - Mike
Cool idea and your so right about time!
haha, :) better late than never - Mike
AMEN Happy Wife, Happy Life!
Probably one of the oldest sayings known to man! - Mike
Excellent
Thank you sir - Mike
Great job, hubby! I need one of those
You could put 2 20x20 air conditioner filters side by side on top of those fans to keep the blades clean 👍
You know what they say... happy wife happy life !
Very very true! - Mike
Awe! You did good Mike. Erin has just what she needs. Luck for the hay hey!
Thank you Jen - Mike
Erin sounds like my wife "You have a surprise for me?? You didn't use the good sheets to do it with did you?"
LOL!! Like they don't have more sheets down at the store.
I was surprised by that too :) Always fun - Mike
Nice build. Good luck with hay season. With all the rain you are getting maybe you will get a second cutting........
Thank you very much. Ya never know. I have tried a second cutting before and although it looked promising it really wasn't worth it. Time will tell. - Mike
That's awesome !
Thank you - Mike
great video, thanks Mike
Thank you Jesse - Mike
your garden looks great Erin..:)
and you sire..disurves more then brownies..:D
The rain is be a mixed blessing maybe 🤔? Bad for cutting but good for more growth and thicker grass = less bales that may need to be bought in the Fall?
Boy I hope so. The grass at this point has went to head and is ready to go to seed. We need to get it out of there. Thanks Andy - Mike
Mike you did awesome & tell Aaron her vegetable garden looks great .
Thank you Patricia - Mike
Anytime the wife is happy is a good day. Erin could probably use a couple more racks. More brownie points for you.
I'm sure more would be handy. Thanks for watching - Mike
Loved that
Instead of using that little spinner, use the spin cycle on an old washing machine. Holds a lot and dries really well!
Nice job Mike
Great drying rack....By the way Mike, my Mike thinks the VELCRO is a GREAT idea 👍👍
Thank you, there are lots of tricks for those things but that one works for me :) - Mike
Keep up the great work mike 👍
Thank you Cory - Mike
Send your rain over here to CA! We need it. Thx again for another great video Mike, Glad Erin was pleased with your work. Nice job
Thank you, I would send it if I could. This year has been weird for rain. - Mike
beautiful job! ;)
Thank you very much - Mike
Great job Mike! ) Am sure Erin is just thrilled with the new drying rack! ) Good luck on haying, it might be tough for a bit, but it will get better. All the best to both of you and the kids! )
We have some decent weather coming, just have to dry it out first. I should have made a dryer for the hay fields :) - Mike
Great job
Thanks for the vlog mike
Mike you are just the best im glad the drying rack worked out good luck with the haying and hopefully not so much rain for you. high five from sown under
Thanks Anna!! You rock! - Mike
Cool!
Thank you for watching - Mike
Great Video Mike 👍
Thank you very much - Mike
Great build
Thank you very much - Mike
Looks good on the drying rack.
Thank you Frank - Mike
nice job Mike.
Thanks Rodney - Mike
Want to save some time? Chuck that spin drier into a cordless drill, lol
That might be fun! Thanks - Erin
Mike I have learned if you want rain leave your pallet of seed or fertilizer outside while you run to town to get lunch or wash the windows on the tractor and the best one of all decide to just lay down a bunch of hay so you can get cutting out of the way for a week every time I lay a bunch of acres on the ground here it comes out of clear skies have a great evening hope you can get the hay you need I don't know what hay you prefer but I have been checking and I think not an expert by any means but I think you can truck some good to great quality hay in from hay producing state cheaper then you can source that hay locally 1 ton of clean fescue and orchard grass here is around 65 to 100 dollars i know its not much or any higher in Kentucky or Illinois so may be a thought look at some of the hay exchanges online they line up hauling and everything I sell 1200 pound net rolls for 45 so I hope this helps and they had alfalfa Bermuda fescue and orchard grass on the sites
I hear ya there. Last I looked we were paying about 5 dollars a loaded mile for trucking. That adds up fast. Thanks - Mike
Our Wyoming Life yea we used to do trucking but I guess it would depend on how much you needed you obviously can't come out of here with hay it would be 10000 just to get it there but I think south Dakota is near 100 a ton just throwing some options I have heard of it always help to know if there may be a better deal somewhere hope you get it figured out I can't stand running out of hay
Mike like the drying rack you made for your wife good job jerry
I love the look of your sickle bar mower it looks like it makes a lot bigger swath then a regular swather like I use what other advantages is it over a regular swather
You did well to get that all for "around" $100.
Thank you and thanks for watching - Mike
I like things not PAIN-Ted. But I think that needs to be Pain-ted Gloss White. Or make the next one out of Stainless Steel so you don't have to Pain-t. Pain-ting is a pain in the rear. Good Day!
haha, I hear ya. Thanks John - Mike
If you dont want to wash that metal rack all the time, using a Flat Rack with closed sides..
I see them for about $10 ea, its 19-3/4" X 19- 3/4" X 4" inch tall
If you end up making a bigger dry table or you want to stack the racks up a few at a time to dry more, you can.
Leave them and come back to it later.
Point I was looking at is that you can wash or dry multi items at one times. Stack the racks to dry. You can wash and stack them waiting for the dryer.. remove them faster and reload the dryer faster and bag a bit faster... time to move on to the next job..
At the end of it all.. you can wash them in a sink faster then the fan rack.
Something like this.. link : www.webstaurantstore.com/noble-products-full-size-combination-flatware-rack-with-closed-sides/274RKCLFLTWR.html?Google&GoogleShopping&gclid=CjwKCAjwp7baBRBIEiwAPtjwxGsjOMNhDrlfB8ZLSvWP8nYbU28PqtTquagNRVZYvAphx_IU5WoRFRoCyH4QAvD_BwE
Awesome, thank you very much. This was just off the top of my head but that really looks like it works - Mike
You can make 3 or 4 that size to save on spasee
Very true, thank you very much - Mike
Hi hope jay goes good
So do we. Thank you very much - Mike
It's The Little Things......
That it is. Thank you - Mike
Do more like this
Thank you very much - Mike
im just gonna say this we were swimming in the river by my house and found fishin line and pulled it up and it had a fish thats alive on it
Interesting. Thanks for watching - Mike
we been getting rain here at fort carson every night
kinda been that way here too. Raining now. Thanks - Mike
Also - I love that industrial sized salad spinner! Where does one find such a thing?
Heyy, can you make a full video about the bulls, Please
We just did th-cam.com/video/UbDNh0ty0rI/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching - Mike
You have a wonderful - Wyoming Life and a Beautiful Wife! You both are doing great things on your ranch! Do you have a website for your steaks?
We dont sell meat online yet, shipping is an issue as it can get quite expensive and we are looking for an affordable option. Thanks - Mike
How many bales are you hoping for and will you still have to buy hay. Thanks for another great video.
We will probably end up having to buy hay, we need about 500 tons to make it through winter with our current herd size. Thanks for watching - Mike
Mike my friend and I have spent the last 2 weeks in Wyoming and Montana now we are headed back to home in eastern Oklahoma spending the night in Sheridan. My question what in the thunderation is sage brush good for?
♥️👍
I wonder if you added sides to the drying rack would that increase it's efficiency?
Where did you get the produce spinner?
Stick your power strips on your copier. It'll give you the perfect template to put your screws. I'm not a fan of hook and loop.
Excellent
Thats a good idea. Pity the manufacturers dont include a small sheet of paper already done. I am going to follow your advice.
Peter Hallman fer real
Thank you very much for the great tip! - Mike
One question how do you deal with pest in the garden ?
I'd paint it beings how you didn't use treated wood, but looks nice
I'm sure I'll end up making more, or modifying it but pain is on the list. Thanks - Mike
that's a lot of land in have 200 acers
Very cool Thank you - Mike
Without proper AIR filtration anything on that rack will indeed be covered in air born debris and contamination. Keep this in mind if you decide to make one or eat food prepared this way.
How is the peacock doing and did you get another leg designed for it after the one broke
We made a new design after the one broke. He is doing great. th-cam.com/video/D9J6LwOGgZM/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching - Mike
Well you don’t need sleep. So I was thinking you could add one more layer the cart. So you can have double the time free then you have with it now. Get what I am saying?
Yup, thank you very much - Mike
You're a keeper, Mike! Do you have any (much) older brothers who like crazy goat ladies?? ;^]
Sorry, only child here :( - Mike
You need s work bench or saw horses.
Hi mike how are you today
Doing good, chugging along. How are you ? - Mike
Im doing good thanks
how much land do you have
Over 5000 acres. Thanks for watching - Mike
