How I Dehydrate my own Food for Ultralight Camping

    TIPS:
    1. To make rehydrating more efficient, make sure to use small chunks of food, cut down meats and veggies as small as possible, and if using beans pick smaller varieties like pinto beans and black beans rather than big kidney beans.
    2. REHYDRATING: put dehydrated meal in a pot, fill only to the top of the food with water and let it soak for 30mins or more (best to do while you're setting up camp if you plan to have dinner right after). It won't be completely rehydrated but it kickstarts the process. Then boil it up and simmer until the biggest pieces of food are fully rehydrated. Add water as you go but be sure not to add too much or your meal will be very bland.
    3. Some of my friend keep food-safe silica packages and put them into their dehydrated meals to be extra sure no moisture ruins your meals. I just keep mine in the freezer right up until the night before my trips just to be sure.

  • @JackieWM420

Hi Alexis! I've experimented different methods of dehydrating for shelf life. If you want a meat based meal to last for say one of your longer camping trips, it's a good idea to rinse the fat from and pat dry the cooked meat then continue with the recipe. While the fat adds flavor, it also goes rancid and it doesn't lose that much flavor. Promise. Especially if the food is going to be traveling in a backpack on a warm sun beating down day. I really enjoy your content, Congratulations! Happy house building! Thank you so much for sharing glimpses of your beautiful wedding and bits of your life 🥰

If you "under yeast" a bread dough, you can let it go for a lot longer and it will slowly rise (and end up tasting more complex and delicious!) - the no knead technique is done that way.

Hi Careena, I already made this dish three years ago and dehydrated it. But you should use twice the amount of herbs and spices when preparing it, perhaps adding a few pickled capers. Because after rehydrating, the spices have lost a lot of their intensity. Warm greetings from the German Eifel.

Just an FYI on the bread. If you have treated water "most public water" it could have high amounts of chlorine in it which will kill the yeast. I learned that while homebrewing beer. I had two batches fail to ferment and later found out my city had double dosed the water because of an issue they where having. So something to think about. Normally if its "too little" yeast it will still work just take longer to rise.

Research a vacuum sealer if you do not already own one. They are life changing and money saving. Add silicone molds for soups and pasta with sauce and a large freezer. Poached chicken, taco meat, roasted turkey, bacon, shaved steak, steak, roast beef, and cooked boneless pork chops can all be portioned to fit anyone or any size family when sealed and frozen. So many other possibilities. We use ours and have saved so much money over the last decade of using it. Mom loves her soups so she prepares the veggies and vacuum seals enough for a pot of soup and freezes. One time washing and cutting for the next 3-4 pots of soup. Well worth the investment IMO.
Edit: Works really well on raw meat as well.

Shout out to compost. Once your pile comes alive for the first time and you're standing in front of a steaming 160 degree pile on a 10 degree day you'll know the joy. When one big scoop of the rich sifted compost at the bottom of a hole gives you enough cherry tomatoes to feed an army you'll know the joy.

I just finished a back country paddle in Algonquin Provincial Park with 5 buddies. We ate very well but nearly broke our backs carrying food (and maybe a bevvie or two). Prior to the trip, I had tried a couple of packages of different, commercially produced dehydrated meals I picked up at Sail. I wouldn't call them awful but they weren't particularly good tasting, were quite expensive, and not nearly enough for a meal. Hence, we decided take food and prepare meals over the fire (we had a chef in the group.) Have you done a side by side comparison of a commercially produced meal compared to one of yours? If so, how does it compare? (I need to upgrade my dehydrator. I have the round type with 8 trays but it is very slow.) Thanks for your video, cheers.

Works great for fruits and veggies but I’ve not tried anything like this before. Getting ready to go on my first backpacking trip and I have several severe food sensitivities so this method will be a lifesaver for me.
