Same! 👍 The story came out of the blue 😂 and I didn't expected it in a tutorial & because of her calm and introverted sounding voice. :'D Without the little potatojoke I would just leave a thumbs up for the usefull informations and go, but now you have also my sub. You deserved it! ^^👍
So many videos I would click on because the title sounds interesting but then I look and they're 27 mins long. Yet you can pack all of that into 5 and a bit. I liked it.
After visiting Ireland i was intrigued to find out there wasn't a potato shortage as such, it was just that the English took as many potatoes as they wanted to without regard to the Irish. Yes there was blight, but that wasnt the issue, the issue was exporting all their food while the Irish starved, to death
What a fantastic video! These 5 grocery store backpacking dinners are such a great idea - cheap, easy, and perfect for those of us who don't own a dehydrator or run out of time to prepare meals. Thanks for sharing these handy tips. I'll definitely be trying some of these on my next hiking trip! Cheers, Simon - Tales From Abroad
I use the nescafe cappuccino choc shakers for herbs, spices , dehydrated ( bended ) mushrooms etc. Or soup mix lentals. Air tight, light wieght, great for weeked camping ❤. Did it for 20yrs as a remote area fireman and instructor
I absolutely love your sense of humour. Apart from your useful tips your sense of humour comes through in a lot of your content n i think its great.Your style pulls people in .Keep up the great work love your channel. Now i think i might go eat a packet of chips,im totally jelly after that.
❤👍🇨🇱😎 a great alternative to not going without butter Molly mcbutter or butter buds 🤸🕺 and one of my favorite alternatives is ghee🤸🕺 I make it at home and put it in one of the little drink pouches 8 oz or a 16-oz and when I get back I just refill it a second time
Another cracking video, Hayley! I especially loved the potato love story! 😂. I’ll definitely try a couple of these ideas (gluten free versions for me tho) on the trail. Thanks for sharing with us :)
Here’s a recipe I came up with, dried apples, bread crumbs, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon (maybe a bit of nutmeg), pour boiling water over it, mix and let sit. Backpacking apple pie filling.
Dried peas? Cool. I will look for them. I used to have those knives in your kitchen. Not recommended. The handles peel and always a risk the paint on the metal might wear off a bit onto your food. Back to watching...
Another goodie. I feel a bit shamed eating instant mash with chicken salt - but it tastes good. Perhaps I can step things up after watching this 🏕️ a 100g packet of bacon frozen before departure can add a lot of joy. I've had 11 days out of it and still producing smiles
When I opened the video I momentarily mistook the ‘ad’ for the first meal…”it was for a Lindt Chocolate Bar”. In fairness, it fit the theme as it’s sold in grocery stores. Fun video!
Wow this is brilliant. And so happy a fellow Australian finally! Love the videos. Btw where did you get the instant mash potatoes? Couldn’t find it on coles website
Brilliant. What a short sweet succinct video. They are usually so drawn out and protracted. Refreshing change from what is out there. Love your humour. And yes....I pressed like. Before you even wondered whether I had. I guess I will have to subscribe as well😁
I just tried out that mashed potato with peas and beans and vegetable protein etc, and it was really good. You could probably add any spices you wanted but it's honestly fine with just a little salt and pepper. I was surprised I'd never cooked with that vegetable protein before as it's surprisingly good stuff. Very meaty texture! Would be a great recipe after a long day of hiking!
Fun fact. You don't need a dedicated dehydrator. A fan-forced oven set to 50ºC and some low trays work. At that temperature, you don't overcook the food, just drive off the water. Ziplock bags are good enough to weigh out into single meals and you can keep them in the freezer until you need them. Write on the bag what's inside. Just have to be careful that any meat is fat-free as it can go rancid and finely minced so it gets fully dehydrated. I can't believe how unhealthy many hikers eat.
An enjoyable video with some helpful ideas - thanks mate! I can't be bothered with dehydrating, so these are the types of meals I take with me. A first night favourite of mine is to make some fresh homemade pesto, then at camp boil some pasta and some fresh veg, then add the pesto and sometimes some smoked sausage. And parmesan - after all, we are not savages.
What is your potato’s name? If that isn’t the single (or taken) best food in every form I don’t know what is!! Gem of a vid. Well done, er, cooked. Dried peas are on my list now…
Long live mashed potato powder, the fastest way to tasty hot meal! Great love story too)) This is the second time I envy tuna packets, the only tuna-related packets we have is cat food... Otherwise can-only My additions: 1) egg noodles are the way to go for protein if you're boiling and not soaking them anyway. I'm a fan of a particular brand in Northern Europe, they aren't any special fancy health food, but simply contain 14g of protein per 100g anyway 2) kabanos sausages. It's the thin dried ones meant for snacking with a beer, but as they can be kept without a fridge it's a nice tasty addition to your meal as well. Had some with mashed potatoes, awesome! Maybe they have some dried tuna in beer snack sections too, need to look into that xD
What a perfectly wonderful way to begin another awesome day😃 Waking up to your video first thing Ms Hayley☺️ I’ve used the first couple of tips regularly for years, frozen meals when car camping in particular👍🏻 The instant Alfredo’s in all forms with added bits always a win-win too Fortunately those prices haven’t gone up as bad over here🙏🏻 Taking care of your lil tater iced the cake, I needed that chuckle this morning and I thank you👍🏻😂😂😂😂 Always enjoy your offerings Tips, tricks, thoughts & ideas Always with some humor thrown in too❤️ You’re such a upbeat and encouraging person and I look forward to all your content Till next time, take care & stay safe👍🏻🙏🏻😃☺️
Good morning! Well evening by now 😛 Sounds like you're on top of all your meals! Haha I'm going to feel guilty when I end up eating the potato from this video. He looks so innocent in the pantry. 😛 Thank you so much, this comment is so lovely!! 💚 😄
Great video Hayley, always loved watching you! Now I have a question, if you hike a few days in another state/country and arrive by flight, how do you handle all your gears? Like just pack up everything (tent, sleeping bag etc) and put in check-in luggage? Also, maybe consider doing some more hiking guide videos as you hike some classic/famous hikes? Catch the highlights and major challenges of those hikes perhaps? Personally as a landscape enthusiast, the hike to Lake Oberon in Tassie (especially in winter) is always on top of my list, but it seems too much for me at this stage.
Thank you! Yeah I'll cram everything into my check in luggage and then also have a day pack as carry on which has my camera stuff/batteries. If I am using a transport company to get to a track I try and see if they have the option to look after my day pack while i'm hiking. Or even stay at the same accomodation before and after a hike so they can store my day pack. And obviously have to buy a new lighter/fuel after the flight. Specific hiking guide videos is a great suggestion, I'd have to remind myself to write information down as i'm planning it otherwise the details get blurred into each other with different hikes! 😂 Lake Oberon in winter would be so beautiful. Make it your mission!
Any kind of appliance store should have them! Both of mine are just cheap ones that I got online. Dehydrator is from Kogan and the vacuum sealer was off ebay. One day I might invest in a more fancy one but so far they are holding up great!
I tend to blanch the I guess 'harder vegetables' like carrot/broccoli. Or vegetables that I would find weird to eat raw like eggplant/zucchini. I dont blanch things like mushrooms, beans, peas/corn, leafy greens. But also a bit of a trial and error. :)
Haha I will have to get around to doing a bloopers video one day soon. The ones from this video mainly consist of me having to stop filming because of the screaming child in the street and the neighbour who decided to mow his lawns as I pressed record 😛
You have a knack for presenting a subject and making it interesting. The only problem with this video is that you were driving on the wrong side of the road. Maybe an overdose of potato affected your senses?? ;) (for those about to flame me.. I know! they drive on the left in that country)
You totally ignored cous cous in favour of pasta and sauce sachets 😵💫... Hayley my dear, try the Hart and Soul Mediterranean cous cous (1 serve prep'ed as per pkt instructions)... meanwhile add 30ml olive oil, a sliced Striker stick of pepperoni, 6 Cherry tomatoes halved, and 10 black pitted olives in a pot and fry for a couple of minutes to warm up... and if you're feeling really fancy and it's your first night out... half a block of pre-frozen haloumi that you fry in it's block form (aka, don't cut if first) using a little extra olive oil and break it up to mix it into the other ingredients. (always fry haloumi in one piece, it's so much easier and quicker!). So. Damn. Good. And salty. Even better if you add vegeta stock powder to the cous cous prior to soaking it. Bon appetite!
Came for the food tips, stayed for the potato love story
haha! Some say it's The Notebook in potato form.
Same! 👍

I like to buy the 2.5oz meat packets (Bacon, Chicken, Pulled Pork) to add to my meals. Instant Grits (or mash potatoes) + 2.5oz Bacon packet Dehydrated Refried Beans + 2.5oz Chicken packet Mash Potatoes + 2.5oz BBQ Pulled Pork.
We freeze leftovers flat in a Ziploc bag. Chili, pulled pork etc, lighter than a container!
Love it! Great idea! 😊

Hiiiiiii 😁😄
Very nice Hayley... would never have thought to use dehydrated ingredients from the $upermarket instead. I like! 🙃
Thank you! It's a shame they don't have more dehydrated choices!
Young lady, you do a lot in just a 5 min video. I subbed before you asked! 👍
Bahaha love your videos Hayley 😂 keep them coming
Thank you Deb! 😁
G'day from Australia 🇦🇺.
Considering a dehydrator!
You consider well! 😛
I'm hungry ... and I'm not going to hike soon 😅
We seem to have created a predicament 😛
If you’re cooking for more than 7 minutes, dried red lentils are also a nice thing to add.
I do like a good stash of lentils! :)
Great fun video. Shame I'm a coeliac and can't eat any of these as they all contain gluten.
Still dehydrate my meals.
One of my best friends growing up was coeliac, i'm sure the dehydrator is your greatest asset for hiking food in this case!
Great video Hayley, always loved watching you!

More on the dehydrator and vacuum sealer! Where can you get them?
Any kind of appliance store should have them! Both of mine are just cheap ones that I got online. Dehydrator is from Kogan and the vacuum sealer was off ebay. One day I might invest in a more fancy one but so far they are holding up great!
Don’t forget the boiled eggs …Have fun stay safe.
I love seeing other hikers randomly whip out an egg 😛 I need to be part of the egg gang!
I add extra garlic powder to pretty much all of my savoury backpacking meals.
You and my mum would get along, she adds garlic powder to everything! 🤣
Why we sleep! good book tbh
Good spotting haha my favourite book!! I think reading it should be a prerequisite for being a human! :)
Alfredo ad ftw 💯💯🔥🔥
Followed closely by Mac N Cheese 😛
Ok ok, stop looking at me like that. I am subscribing already.
I am proud of you 😛
Do not chuck out the butter. Gram for gram butter has more calories than most dehydrated foods and it tastes wonderful.
gram for gram butter melts
@@Kai-xb4we Not dehydrated butter or ghee.
@@bruceparr1678 love myself too much for that
Good video. Please next time make a video of cooking Indian food
I have a very important question unrelated to the content in this video: do you blanch your veggies before hiking? Or just roll the dice?
I tend to blanch the I guess 'harder vegetables' like carrot/broccoli. Or vegetables that I would find weird to eat raw like eggplant/zucchini. I dont blanch things like mushrooms, beans, peas/corn, leafy greens. But also a bit of a trial and error. :)
I'm still wondering which supermarket sells dehydrated water & dino eggs.. been looking for years
hahah! I was wondering if anyone was going to pick up on that 🤣 No luck at my local supermarket, they were out of stock apparently.
Ghee! Keeps better than butter…
Good to know for the future! 🧈
Zombie apocalypse eh! On a more serious note, how about a bloopers video, there must of been a few whilst filming this one.
Haha I will have to get around to doing a bloopers video one day soon. The ones from this video mainly consist of me having to stop filming because of the screaming child in the street and the neighbour who decided to mow his lawns as I pressed record 😛

Dehydrated peas is not the same as dry peas! Dry peas need to be boiled for 45 min!
I wonder if that potato knows just how good it has it. At least for now 🤫
I literally made mashed potato last night and avoided using the potato from this video, I couldn't bear the thought 😛
lol! It's like those videos where someone saves a lobster from the grocery store and gives it a free life 😆
