  • The theme of the month continues with Larynx - HALLOWEEN EDITION
    Over the past few weeks we talked about the larynx as a spider that lives on a web in the throat. The web below are the muscles that lower the larynx, and the web above, the muscles that raise it. To raise and lower the larynx without tension, we have to keep that web taut so the spider can move up and down effortlessly.
    Today, we’re going to talk about how to engage and make stable the upper part of the web.
    The muscles that raise the larynx are more complicated than the ones that lower them because they are many of them in many different spots.
    The upper web starts at the hyoid bone, the top of the larynx, and inserts into the floor of the mouth, the jaw, and up behind the ear.
    Let's engage the upper web:
    STEP ONE: Hold out the sound "ooo"
    STEP TWO: Flare your nostrils, hard.
    STEP THREE: Pretend as though you’re eavesdropping on a conversation behind you, but you can’t turn your head. Your ears go up and back and align over your shoulders.
    STEP FOUR: Add those together (ears over shoulders, + flare nostrils)
    It brightens because by engaging the nostrils and ears, you’re stabilizing the upper part of the web. And because the upper is taut and the bottom web is not, the spider goes up.
    For your treat I’m going to be like one of those cool moms who opens the door and just holds out the bowl of candy, and lets you choose.

    I get it. Its using your imagination to affect actual change. When I had voice classes - many years ago - among some of the things I was taught to help with projection was to "spray" the sound - as if I had a can of paint spray - toward the back of the room but without raising my volume. It worked. Imagination works. Cool tips. Thanks.

    This is very helpful, but I don't understand what you mean by the techniques, because I have little control over so not only do I not know if I can flare my nostrils, my eyes lift up and get super big since I don't have control.

      Haha think about making a "stank face" or like you just smelled something nasty. The nostrils naturally flare when you "curl" your upper lip!

      @@undeadvoicelab Thank you, I just might eventually, but right now I don't even have a cam or microphone. I'll get that taken care of soon. Also in the meantime I'm making changes that are good for the voice and overall health, changing to mostly drinking water, healthier snacking habits (seeds, nuts, fruits, high fiber cereals) and quitting smoking. I'll really feel better and ready to take on any voice exercises once I am rid of the smoker's cough. Anyway I'm babbling on, I hope you have a nice night and thank you again!

    • @undeadvoicelab
      @undeadvoicelab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Instead of focusing on the nose specifically, think of sneering, so engaging the upper lip as though you just smelt somethint SUPER nasty. This will automatically flare the nostrils!

    can people control the ears movement like dumbo ? how..

    • @undeadvoicelab
      @undeadvoicelab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some can, many can't. I don't have isolated control over my ear muscles for sure. Instead, by imagining someone is behind you you're needing to eavesdrop on without turning your head, it elongates your neck, and aligns your shoulders over your ears (up and back). Without having to be able to wiggle your ears! haha

    • @Tmotley01
      @Tmotley01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I can easily move my ears. There's a muscle that's located directly behind the ears that you flex and it'll pulls the ears back.

    "Hear the difference?" No, i infact do not and my brightness is not changing. I hear the difference in yours but not mine.

    • @undeadvoicelab
      @undeadvoicelab  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Makes sense! First step is to hear the change in someone else's voice. Once you can consistently hear that, then you start working on a beginner exercise to train your ear to hear the change in your own voice (the video above is one you can try, but there are many others if this one doesn't work for you). Third step once you can hear resonance changes, is to learn how to change the size and shape of your own vocal tract (throat, mouth, etc) to create a sound that is affirming for you and make it a habit in your voice.
