All month long the Trans Voice Talk Tuesday videos are going to be about the scariest part of your voice transition, the larynx.
Raising and lowering the larynx is the most effective way to change the resonance of your voice. By raising the larynx you brighten the voice, and by lowering the larynx you darken it.
Let’s talk about HOW that happens.
I want you to imagine that your larynx is a spider that lives in your throat. That spider moves on a web. The web of your larynx spider extends both above and below. When the web is taut the spider can easily move up and down because it’s stable and supported. But when the web is loose or unengaged, it’s like the spider is trying to walk on a flimsy web. It can happen, it CAN move, but it’s going to take a LOT more effort, strain and strength to get there.
That web we’re talking about are the muscles that raise and lower the larynx. When you engage and anchor the muscles above and below the larynx it gives it stability so that it can move freely and effortlessly up and down.
THIS is the key to moving the larynx without tension. When you move your spider on a flimsy web, the amount effort it takes to move can cross the line and become tension. But remember, you anchor the web, the spider can move up and down, and the effort stays at a healthy level allowing you to brighten or darken your voice with ease!
