My British husband cooked porridge every morning. He would soak the oats in water overnight, then add a little evaporated milk and fresh blueberries to the pot in the morning. He would stir the porridge with a beautiful spurtle topped with a carved thistle. Whenever I found Lyles syrup in a store, I would surprise him with a can or two. We were married 39 years before he died, and aside from vacations away from home, this is how he started each day.

Depending on my mood I sometimes cook it quicker to have a more coarse porridge or give it time for a smoother one. I also love using different flakes instead of just oat. I have porridge on weekday mornings. Like Jamie, I prepare it with water and a smidge of salt. I sometimes add various items such as blueberries, prunes etc. My favourite is to stir in cinnamon and then chopped figs half away through the cooking so that they soften and plump up. I finish with splash of milk into it. It's so lovely.
I once was so bored at Heathrow (after spending more than 5 hours there), I went to one of the restaurants and ordered the cheapest thing they had (because I was kinda poor, a student but didnt wana just wait arround anymore. It was a 9 euro porrigde! Crasy stupid expensive porrige! But what they added on it was lovely and I've done it several times at home after that: Just top the porrige with: Slices of 4-5 fresh strawberries,. slices of half a banana, some maple syrup and some sunflower seeds, I'd say about 2 tablespoons. You can even roast them a but for a nutties flavour. It was awesome. But still bloody expensive.
Right. I was just remembering reading the fairy tale about the magic porridge pot that overflowed the town with porridge when it wouldn't stop and thinking porridge was this amazing thing.
Zoid Burg The oats people use are usually almost 'dead' because they have been pasteurized. Soaking, fermenting and sprouting is good against phytic acid as far as I know. I soak other grains for 5-12 hours, oat grains are lighter (according to the German Dr. Bruker who was an expert in this field and studied Bircher Benner's muesli) and need less time to soak and be well digestible.
Nimity Tei If you have whole oat groats, you must first flake them by using an oat roller. I let mine fall from the machine (I have one called Flocino) into a dish with some water to prevent oxidation of the flakes. They should soak 30 min. to 1 hour. All of them should be just moist. Don't use too much water. Then add sweet fruits and raw nuts to enjoy it. ;) It is a light meal (you don't feel it in the stomach) but I feel hunger only after 4-5 hours. Feel free to ask more if you need help.
I start cooking my oatmeal just like Jamie does. But I usually add one whole banana sliced and a few pieces of good quality dark chocolate. No need to add sugar as the banana is sweet enough. It's like having dessert for breakfast. Very satisfying 👌
Jamie Oliver, you're brilliant! I'm so glad I discovered your Foodtube videos. My favorites are the ones where you demonstrate how to prepare a particular food in a variety of ways. I also love how you reference the cooking techniques of different countries. Very educational and inspiring! You're a wonderful chef and a delight to watch. Cheers from the states!!
I like to boil my water first, throw in the oats, bring it back to the boil and turn it off. I let it sit until it has nearly absorbed all the water, add a couple tablespoons of powdered coconut milk and two tablespoons of brown sugar mix and eat (straight out of the pot because I don't share). If it's Summer and I can get fresh peaches then I dice one up and throw it in.
I've been watching you for years now Mr. Oliver and I gotta say I really like you and your cooking videos. They're always a good way to relax whether you just want to relax or you had a tough day. 😊🤗 I even prefer your videos to music most of the time!! Your videos are also very inspiring, I have tried out a lot of stuff and everything was great!! Really, I can't remember anything or any recipe that failed me. 👍 👌 So thank you Jamie for what you do, it's just such a great thing that we can learn from you and your friends!! 😃😃
My mother used to cook porridge in a double saucepan, she started early morning so it was ready for our breakfast. Never boiled over, it was creamy and so good. Half and half milk and water with the top of the milk poured on top once it was dished out. I made it like that for my kids and my grandchildren.
i have my porridge with dates, apples, figs, bananas, blueberries and flaxseeds. sometimes i add cocoa powder to it and it tastes amazing!!! cinneamon and a pinch of salt and pepper always goes in there :)
BurninRevolver It probably depends where you live - here its about R55 for a litter - around 5$ - thats decent - compared to regular milk its expensive - I also use rice milk - these days I like the rice milk more
My mother cooks it with milk instead of water and cooks a banana cut in small pieces with it. Love it with cinnamon and sugar. Perfect for winter eve's.
I usually have porridge super simple - oats cooked in water with 1/3 of a banana and the rest of it cut up on top once it's done or oats cooked in water with loads of cinnamon and a cut up apple (a healthy apple pie nearly haha), but I used to love having porridge with a medley of frozen berries on top and a big dollop of 100% peanut butter until one time I dropped it onto the carpet and haven't been able to bring myself to indulge in it since
I love this video! It resets me, I start cooking like this, and then drift away. But this is the best! I add some vegan yogurt, almond butter, raspberries, blueberries and half of banana. And of course some honey. Keeps me full till lunch, the best breakfast.
I always have porridge every day, i add a teaspoon of ground flax seed and a teaspoon of chia seeds, handful of blueberries and a chopped banana, then the icing on the cake is a tablespoon of peanut butter. It’s gorgeous!
Love it ,I have just stated using the porridge as a savory instead of rice, spiced up and use beef or chicken broth instead of water. Thanks for your tips .
I make a savory oatmeal dish boiling the oats in chicken stock ( store bought or home-made but i use the Kirkland brand chicken stock from Costco, it's so tasty with the oats) and then add in any preferred veg and chicken/shrimp, salt and spices to taste and it's soo good, especially if you want something filling but you're trying to lose weight. I've seen this done with soft boiled eggs as well but haven't tried that yet. It's basically a substitute to rice but obviously its a porridge.
I eat my porridge with cocoa powder, cinnamon, bit of maple syrup and a pinch of salt for i think about a year now as my breakfast and I just never get tired of it, it is so delicious I love it :-)
I have porridge no matter what season! Big mug of oats, almost a mug of milk, microwave for 2 mins delish!! Add chia seeds sometimes cinnamon or maple syrup if having it as “snack” before a work out/long walk 😉
You want to add the salt at the end after the oats have already cooked. If you add it at the start, they won't get as creamy because pentosans - the gum inside the oats that binds with water and makes that creaminess - will not be able to bond with the water, because the salt will bond to it instead. Probably not as big a problem for rolled oats as steel cut but still, salt at the end is better.
Loved the new topping ideas Jamie : ) I’ve been making porridge used natural organic muesli , it’s got all the bells and whistles already in and tastes fantastic with yoghurt
I used to make it with milk, in fact I did until this very moment. Now I've resolved to change my ways and use water. I looked this up in the first place because I want to make porridge but I don't have any milk. Now I can have porridge (which is seriously one of my favourite foods ever, it can be a breakfast or a pudding imo) without any milk. Thanks Jame Oliver!
I’m from the Scottish highlands and after doing a 12.5 hour night shift as a nurse there was nothing better than porridge with honey and a wee bit of cream as a topping. Amazing.
I love to make porridge and top it with sliced banana, dark chocolate, strawberries and blueberries if we have any. So tasty and fills me up for hours 😊
I like grated fresh ginger and ground cloves for “Ginger snap” porridge decorate with fresh fruit in summer or dried fruit in winter. Really nice on rainy days.
Sometimes I will have savoury porridge, with an easy-over egg and a slice of bacon, plus black pepper and salt to taste. The runny yolk drizzles over the porridge - it's so silky! #myperfectporridge
Looks great but MY PORRIDGE IS BEST! I soak half a cup of oats with a whole cup of almond milk -chuck in two teaspoons of chia seeds -a pitch of nutmeg -a small dash of vanilla essence -a small teaspoon of cinnamon -chuck in a few raisins -a big teaspoon of whatever honey of your choice -slice up half a banana and pop it in mix it all up, put it in the fridge overnight, ready to eat just as is in the morning, or you can heat it up in a small pot with a bit of water if that's what you'd prefer. :) You can also add some fruit on top!
+Grace H Me too.... I add chia seeds and coconut and chopped dates. I sweeten with either honey or maple syrup... I prepare it the night before and keep it in the fidge overnight, then take it to work the next day, and then warm it up in the microwave. It doesnt need a lot of cooking as the overnight soaking in milk has softened it. I use almond milk, or sometimes rice milk... I tried soya milk and its way too sour.
Thanks Jamie I was making it good for a while then I started making it with coconut milk and it wasn’t really going very thick in fact it wasn’t cooking but now I know the trick start off with a little water cheers
I just prepared a beautiful organic steel cooked oat porridge this morning with smooshed banana, broken walnut kernels and Pure Canadian Maple syrup. Steel cooked oats are incredibly healthy and give next level nutty chewiness and texture. I simmer 1 cup of grains for 15-20 minutes in 2.5 cups of water and 1 cup of unsweetened oat milk with a 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt. It’s so delicious. Love to know what you think if you try this. Stay well 🥰💝
heaps of added sugar there at the end! My 2 cents on a less sugary alternative: do the traditional recipe Mr O gives us here, which is excellent, plus 1 sliced banana, a pinch of cinnamon and a table spoon or so of pepitas/pumpkin seeds for different texture / extra protein
I love porridge, grew up on it and can eat it all day! I make mine with half water and half milk- or a tablespoon of carnation evaporated milk for some luxurious creaminess- after cooked- I put in maple syrup (splash) cinnamon, tablespoon of ground flaxseeds, sprinkle pumpkin seeds. Sometimes depending on season I swap with fruits ( berries or stewed apple) and add cardamom, touch of golden syrup or acacia honey. Whole rolled Scottish oats are the best! Flanagans or taste the difference Sainsbury’s rolled whole oats are my favourites 💙🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I love porridge! Been eating it everyday for breakfast :’D (that’s called variety...) and I love to make it with vanilla pudding (custard? English isn’t my first language lol) so it doubles in volume and is still really tasty!
I make mine with diced peach slices (75gm), mango purée (25gm) and vanilla custard (125ml) with 30gm of rolled oats. I live in a warm climate so , as crazy as this sounds, I top the hot porridge with a big scoop of ice cream 😊
I usually make porridge with almond milk, it is the most delicious porridge ever! The consistency is really creamy and it's almost like a soft pudding! You should definitively give it a try!
Never cooked porridge with wather before, taught it would be not as tasty as with milk but I was totally wrong! JAMIE thank you for this recipe! Delicious! Mashed one banana into the porridge and put one apple on top. Finished with a pinch of cinnamon - yummie 😍😍😍
hey, very nice video! To be honest my wife started to make porridge when she decided to turn vegan and since that time she discovered a lots of options how to make this meal absolutely brilliant. There are tons of versions of this with various seeds, jams, fruits etc.
Thank you for this! I had just attempted my first ever porridge this morning, and thought the consistency wasn't right. I know why now. I think I'll try your recipe the next time I want a good, quick and healthy breakfast for my little one!
The basic recipe I use is: oats, milk instead of water (makes it creamier and adds protein and some sweetness) and cinnamon. Then I'll add extra to it depending on what I'm in the mood for. My usual add-ins : peanut butter (extra protein and adds a bit of salt), jam/jelly/preserves, fruit (normally banana, mashed, so it mixes into every spoonful, or apple sauce), honey/maple syrup, yogurt, brown sugar, extra milk/water.
It’s my favorite breakfast! I do it with vegetable “milk”, it’s more creamy than with cow milk or water. While is cooking I put a sliced banana on a bowl, then add the porridge when cooked, and I top it with 85% chocolate or peanut butter, delicious!
Linda Ackberger yea, It seems quite a lot of sugar.. to be honest every time I bake a cake from a UK or Usa (I’m Italian) recipe I put 1/3 of sugar that it requires, too much! We have very sugary thing too, but for a kid all this sugar is not good
I've been having porridge for years now - 6 days a week, on Sunday's its anything day (eggs or pancakes or eat out for breakfast). I do not add any like sweetness like sugar or honey or golden syrup but use I do use natural sugars from fruits example banana....or sometime I go without anything and eat it plain with a dash of milk.
It's funny. My English hubby, while we were living in the states, complained he couldn't find porridge in the stores. I didn't know what it was back then, but he would hunt the cereal aisles and never find it. I could've kicked him when we came to the UK and I discovered it was just stinking OATMEAL! Like we didn't have rolled oats available.....doofus! We like it with lots of cinnamon, dark brown sugar or maple syrup, and sometimes fruit, like cooked apples or my homemade whole cranberry sauce. I also occasionally do chocolate with a dash of cocoa powder mixed in. As for the calories, so what? You need to start the day with a full meal! If you wanna get technical, having a bigger, higher caloric breakfast is healthier because you have all day to burn it off!
My British husband cooked porridge every morning. He would soak the oats in water overnight, then add a little evaporated milk and fresh blueberries to the pot in the morning. +SmilyLily1996 I make mine with soy milk too. With a chopped apple, rasins and lots of cinnamon on top :)
idahval sounds lovely ^^ Not a huge fan of raisins, but I love apples and cinnamon :D
I love his implementation of a "Builder's mug" as a unit of measurements. So simple!
Jamie! You changed my life. I did oatmeal first time with water and it's delicious I love it. Thank you so much
I once was so bored at Heathrow (after spending more than 5 hours there), I went to one of the restaurants and ordered the cheapest thing they had (because I was kinda poor, a student but didnt wana just wait arround anymore. It was a 9 euro porrigde! Crasy stupid expensive porrige! But what they added on it was lovely and I've done it several times at home after that:
Just top the porrige with: Slices of 4-5 fresh strawberries,. slices of half a banana, some maple syrup and some sunflower seeds, I'd say about 2 tablespoons. You can even roast them a but for a nutties flavour. It was awesome.
But still bloody expensive.
If you purchased at Heathrow in London, you did not pay in Euro.
I make mine with coconut milk and cinnamon and then fold in a stewed rhubarb and date mixture. Very yummy as a special porridge on a winter morning.
Porridge is OATMEAL? Good god, all the childhood stories now click together.
Hanon Ondricek I guess whether it's called porridge or oatmeal just depends on which country or region you live in...
Right. I was just remembering reading the fairy tale about the magic porridge pot that overflowed the town with porridge when it wouldn't stop and thinking porridge was this amazing thing.
No, oatmeal is the NA name for porridge oats, and porridge is the cooked dish of porridge oats.
***** Thank you!
Agreed.
oatmeal is awesome because it's high carb AND pretty high in protein (a vegan's best friend)
Yeah, and phytic acid... Even if you soak them it doesn't eliminate it. FAR from a perfect vegan food.
+Sandra Carli how long should you soak oats?
Nimity Tei If you have whole oat groats, you must first flake them by using an oat roller. I let mine fall from the machine (I have one called Flocino) into a dish with some water to prevent oxidation of the flakes. They should soak 30 min. to 1 hour. All of them should be just moist. Don't use too much water. Then add sweet fruits and raw nuts to enjoy it. ;) It is a light meal (you don't feel it in the stomach) but I feel hunger only after 4-5 hours. Feel free to ask more if you need help.
***** hey thanks for the reply, but doesnt the cooking process already get rid of phytic acid? can i still cook them after i soak them?
I even prefer your videos to music most of the time!!
Your videos are also very inspiring, I have tried out a lot of stuff and everything was great!! Really, I can't remember anything or any recipe that failed me. 👍 👌
So thank you Jamie for what you do, it's just such a great thing that we can learn from you and your friends!! 😃😃
Thank you Jamie. Always love your energy, excitement and involvement when you are in the kitchen. Inspired me a lot in life. Please never quit 🙄
Love when these are vegan friendly ❤️ and as a Scottish person - hell yes to porridge! Breakfast of champions x
I add almond milk to mine when cooking - so yummy :)
isnt that very expensive? I once had to sell half my lifer to buy a gallon
nah, its really not
BurninRevolver It probably depends where you live - here its about R55 for a litter - around 5$ - thats decent - compared to regular milk its expensive - I also use rice milk - these days I like the rice milk more
Alésha Bredell $5 for a litre of almond milk? In the U.K. it's 99p for a litre.
@@BurninRevolver it's not expensive
My mother cooks it with milk instead of water and cooks a banana cut in small pieces with it. Love it with cinnamon and sugar. Perfect for winter eve's.
I usually have porridge super simple - oats cooked in water with 1/3 of a banana and the rest of it cut up on top once it's done or oats cooked in water with loads of cinnamon and a cut up apple (a healthy apple pie nearly haha), but I used to love having porridge with a medley of frozen berries on top and a big dollop of 100% peanut butter until one time I dropped it onto the carpet and haven't been able to bring myself to indulge in it since
My children eat chocolate porridge for breakfast every morning. Just mix some cocoa powder in with the water. Yum.
How much cocoa powder do you use? :)
@@Mycenaea 1Tsp is always a good start. Can always add more next time till You get it perfect.
Is it healthy?
I love this video! It resets me, I start cooking like this, and then drift away. But this is the best! I add some vegan yogurt, almond butter, raspberries, blueberries and half of banana. And of course some honey. Keeps me full till lunch, the best breakfast.
Thank you Oliver, I’m a filthy poor peasant who loves eating porridge and this recipe has brought it to a new level.
I cook porridge every morning for breakfast love eating this meal 😁😊😋🥛🥄🍵
I always have porridge every day, i add a teaspoon of ground flax seed and a teaspoon of chia seeds, handful of blueberries and a chopped banana, then the icing on the cake is a tablespoon of peanut butter.
It’s gorgeous!
Love it ,I have just stated using the porridge as a savory instead of rice, spiced up and use beef or chicken broth instead of water. Thanks for your tips .
You're welcome
Peanut butter and dessicated coconut - tastes amazing!
Looks great! I recently began eating oatmeal (I'm in U.S.) and never realized how many ways you can customize it. Thanks for the ideas!
Thanks for the idea !
I do it my way, the Canadian way, with some maple syrup :-)
Thank you
I will try that tomorrow morning. 🤤
Wow with those toping and decoration porridge looks so beautiful.
"Milk burns easily"
I've been making my own porridge since the age of 8, and never once burned it.
Right? Love the flavour ideas, but cooked in water ?!? no!
@@catbaril9072 actually I'm now only cooking it in water because idk I got too lazy to buy new milk
My gran showed me how to make proper porridge always with milk makes it creamy, couldnt eat it made with water looks too thick and stodgy..
Same
I can't eat oatmeal made with water, but it's delicious even without toppings
Cringe same oatmeal with water tastes disgusting
Loved the new topping ideas Jamie : ) I’ve been making porridge used natural organic muesli , it’s got all the bells and whistles already in and tastes fantastic with yoghurt
I used to make it with milk, in fact I did until this very moment. Now I've resolved to change my ways and use water. I looked this up in the first place because I want to make porridge but I don't have any milk. Now I can have porridge (which is seriously one of my favourite foods ever, it can be a breakfast or a pudding imo) without any milk. Thanks Jame Oliver!
Normally just do the golden syrup dump on there, but will try the others!
I've never tried it with golden syrup for me it's always honey
I’m from the Scottish highlands and after doing a 12.5 hour night shift as a nurse there was nothing better than porridge with honey and a wee bit of cream as a topping. Amazing.
I also make mine with water. I usually add about a table spoon and half of brown sugar and then some butter. Simply delicious!
Jamie makes cooking fun for me.
And also he has brilliant ideas how to hack something that simple. Really nice going to try some of these
I love to make porridge and top it with sliced banana, dark chocolate, strawberries and blueberries if we have any.
#myperfectporridge
goodness..i'm going to try this!
Looks great but MY PORRIDGE IS BEST!
I soak half a cup of oats with a whole cup of almond milk
-chuck in two teaspoons of chia seeds
-a pitch of nutmeg
-a small dash of vanilla essence
-a small teaspoon of cinnamon
-chuck in a few raisins
-a big teaspoon of whatever honey of your choice
-slice up half a banana and pop it in
mix it all up, put it in the fridge overnight, ready to eat just as is in the morning, or you can heat it up in a small pot with a bit of water if that's what you'd prefer. :) You can also add some fruit on top!
Way too much work lmao
MARLON4701 not once you get use to it :)
why am i so lazy :(
snap peas sounds amazing!! I'm gonna have to try that sometime, thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for this! I am eating porridge every day now, so yummy for the tummy!😁
Stay well 🥰💝
I make mine with cinnamon, chopped fresh ginger and sliced banana - it's delicious and especially good in the winter!
heaps of added sugar there at the end! My 2 cents on a less sugary alternative: do the traditional recipe Mr O gives us here, which is excellent, plus 1 sliced banana, a pinch of cinnamon and a table spoon or so of pepitas/pumpkin seeds for different texture / extra protein
we can make it however we want
If i need extra sweetness sometimes I will chop 1 or 2 dates in
My favourite one is with peanut butter and blackberry marmelade. Whole blackberries and honey would be also great, I think.
I don't know what to say, I'm so glad with these options thanks alot
ok so I just realized that I've always had porridge for breakfast
and I didn't even know the name of this meal lol
Great video btw
are you like, 6 years old?
@@DanteLikesRock ok that was rude. No, I'm not, but I'm from a country where porridge is a very unusual meal
Same we call it havermout !!!!
Thanks it changed the way I make porridge. It's good this way.
I love porridge! Been eating it everyday for breakfast :’D (that’s called variety...) and I love to make it with vanilla pudding (custard? English isn’t my first language lol) so it doubles in volume and is still really tasty!
Omg I thought I was the only person who does that, or try adding vanilla custard rice pudding it’s sooooo gooood
I make mine with diced peach slices (75gm), mango purée (25gm) and vanilla custard (125ml) with 30gm of rolled oats. I live in a warm climate so , as crazy as this sounds, I top the hot porridge with a big scoop of ice cream 😊
How much Pudding do you use? a teaspoon? how do you add it?
I usually make porridge with almond milk, it is the most delicious porridge ever! The consistency is really creamy and it's almost like a soft pudding! You should definitively give it a try!
Never cooked porridge with wather before, taught it would be not as tasty as with milk but I was totally wrong! JAMIE thank you for this recipe! Delicious! Mashed one banana into the porridge and put one apple on top. Finished with a pinch of cinnamon - yummie 😍😍😍
interesting, where i live these things are called oatmeal.
Same
+Idrium 1987 porridge is a rice with more water
+KickURbutt porridge is oats
America calls it oatmeal and the U.K. Calls it porridge, it depends on where you live
same i thought for the longest time that porridge was some nasty stuff that i dont wanna eat but nvm now
ugh dats too much sugar for me, i’ll try the cooking part tho
It's not enough sugar. I pour it on. Keeps me fit and skinny.
Omg yes... Adding siroup, then more ontop, then even in the berrypart MORE SUGGAR... ew!
hey, very nice video!
How in the hell do you cook that without scalding the milk
It’s my favorite breakfast! I do it with vegetable “milk”, it’s more creamy than with cow milk or water. While is cooking I put a sliced banana on a bowl, then add the porridge when cooked, and I top it with 85% chocolate or peanut butter, delicious!
I love add a Granny Smith apple and walnuts to my porridge ❤
dam chocolate porridge never occured to me...
If you pre-soak your oats the evening before the oats will cook in a flash and be much more creamier, I love your toppings
I’ve been eating porridge for years, my favourite is cinnamon and honey with blueberries sprinkled on the top
Do you want some porridge with that sugar, kids?
Linda Ackberger For real, what I was thinking
Linda Ackberger yea, It seems quite a lot of sugar.. to be honest every time I bake a cake from a UK or Usa (I’m Italian) recipe I put 1/3 of sugar that it requires, too much! We have very sugary thing too, but for a kid all this sugar is not good
Ha ha ha my mom used to say that to me. I was a brown sugar addict. 😅
How to turn healthy oatmeal into high calories glucose bomb :/
boo hoo kmeeeee
I've been having porridge for years now - 6 days a week, on Sunday's its anything day (eggs or pancakes or eat out for breakfast). I do not add any like sweetness like sugar or honey or golden syrup but use I do use natural sugars from fruits example banana....or sometime I go without anything and eat it plain with a dash of milk.
This recipe was amazing! So simple yet creamy and satisfying! I'm having it now as I type :3
Yum Yum, we're definitely a porridge family here.
I eat porridge every day but never thought it could be cooked so delicious different ways Thanks
That's right! AND it stops you craving carbs for the rest of the day! This is true for me at least!
