    Staubach carried the 1975 Cowboys, full of rookies on the roster, on his back to the Super Bowl. Only to lose narrowly to the great Pittsburgh Steelers. One of the best ever.

    I can agree with Landry being #1, but I was thinking this list was specifically for the players only. However, at least you can be assured that Staubach is still the most respected Cowboy player in the franchise's history.

    When you think of Roger Staubach, the thought immediately comes to mind, "What could have been." He entered the NFL as a 27-year old rookie, and sat for two years behind Craig Morton, whom Dallas drafted to throw 60 yard darts to Bullet Bob Hayes. Morton was 6'4" with a cannon for an arm, and Coach Landry was always slow to start a rookie. So, Staubach sat on the bench for the '69 and '70 seasons. In SB V against Baltimore, Morton could do nothing right. Cowboy fans will always wonder what if Landry had put Staubach into the game in the fourth quarter after the Colts completely shut down Morton and the Cowboys in the third quarter. That game could very well have gone to Dallas. And then in '75 with a dozen rookies and after the departures of Duane Thomas and Calvin Hill, the Cowboys lacked the threat of an elite running back until Tony Dorsett came along in '77. Against the defending champion Steelers, Dallas could not move the ball at all on the ground, especially in the 2nd half. Staubach was under constant pressure and was sacked seven times as L.C. Greenwood was unblockable. Even then, Staubach nearly pulled it off in the waning seconds. Dallas had a good team in '75 and rebounded from a poor '74 season, but Pittsburgh was too much. Unfortunately again for Staubach, in SB XIII, a rematch vs. Pittsburgh, the Cowboys were loaded everywhere except for corner. Mel Renfro retired after the '77 season, and Dallas had no DBs who could cover Swann and Stallworth. Dallas contained the running game but Bradshaw lit up Kyle and Barnes, and Dallas' safeties Harris and Waters could not compensate for the weak play of the two CBs. A drop of a sure TD by future HOF TE Jackie Smith still agonizes Cowboy fans 43 years later. Staubach started eight full seasons, including taking over full-time in the '71 season. He led the Cowboys to six NFC title games, four SBs and two world championships. If Landry had put Staubach in SB V and if Smith holds on and Dallas ties it at 21 in the third quarter of SB XIII, Staubach may have won four SBs in the 70s, and Dallas would have been the team of the decade, not Pittsburgh. Other great QBs to follow, Montana in 80s, Aikman, Young and Favre in the 90s, and Brady over the last 20 years didn't face as many great defenses as Staubach did in his four SBs (Miami, Denver, Pittsburgh twice), especially the Pittsburgh teams from '74-'78, which were among the greatest and most physical defensive teams of all time. Staubach was at the top of his game when concussions forced him into retirement at age 37. He led the NFL in passing in his last two seasons and was second in the NFL in TD passes over the '78 and '79 seasons combined. He could have played at a high level for another three or four years and almost certainly would have led Dallas to the SB in 1980 and '81. If he played today, where QBs are barely touched and with the rules tilted to the passing game, he would be lighting up scoreboards. Most of his career was before the 1978 rule changes that began to open up things for receivers beyond five yards from the line of scrimmage. Staubach was "this close" to winning so much more and being in the conversation, along with Brady and Montana (Otto Graham too), for the greatest QB ever. Even so, I would put Staubach in the top 5 of all time as is. It's the thought that he could be no. 1 that is so hard to take.

      @1983jblack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dallas lost to Pittsburgh because the better team won. Mel Renfro was a reserve by '77 so he wouldn't have been a factor much if he stayed in '78. Therefore, Dallas was at its best against the Steelers by Super Bowl XIII. In Super Bowl X, you could argue the same what if about Bradshaw. What if he had not been knocked out? Its very possible the Steelers run out the clock on Dallas and Staubach never gets the ball back. On another note, he threw 3 costly interceptions, 1 gave the Steelers the lead, and another sealed the game. He also threw a costly INT to Blount in SB XIII - I believe it led to Bleier's TD at the end of the half. Another thought on Staubach - He never beat the Steelers in his career, postseason or regular season. I'm not saying he wasn't great, he was and still is one of the greatest to ever play. He pulled so many rabbits out of the hat, it was essentially routine for him. But, would he have won Super Bowls every year? No, other teams were just better - The Colts, Rams, Vikings, and Steelers were all just much better when they beat Dallas. I'm a Steeler fan and used to wonder if they would have won three straight titles by beating Oakland in 1976 had they had Harris and Bleier. Now, I just accept the fact that Oakland was better that year
