Those engines were pulled for low oil pressure. PSI used 2002 Camaro oil pans and pick up tubes with the thin blue oil seal that sucks air in at idle. Check a couple of bearings and use Mahle oil pick up o-ring. Should be good to go
That AMC 4.0 sounds mean. I can attest to the longevity of 4.0. My 99 XJ has over 300k miles on the clock. The body and unibody are shot, but that engine is still chugging along with no issues.

OMG that Hornet brings back some memories! When I met my (now) wife back around 1982 she drive a totally beater 1974 Hornet 2 door fastback in a totally faded red color. The stock exhaust manifold on the straight six had cracked so trying to earn some points, I spent a Saturday replacing that sucker. I guess it worked as we have now been married for 41 years!
Jeep 4.0 inline 6 is such an underrated engine. My first car was a 1989 cherokee it wasn't the "high output" but it got us into plenty of trouble. Super torquey
The deal with those motors is basically b4 chevy trucks went all aluminum but after they were done with cathedral ports, they put ls3 heads on lq4 iron blocks. You need at least a 4" bore to use those heads, hence the 6.0 as opposed to a 5.3 or a 4.8. You can tell by the one offset rocker arm per cylinder. They have wimpy cams. Put a cranking ls3 lumpy boy in it with springs and make 450.
I grew up in Allentown, PA from the time that I was 3 years old until I was 11 years old in 1994 and our favorite pizza place was Palumbo's Pizza. The pizza places in your area are making my mouth water. It's so sad that almost all of the best pizza places in my area have shut down. Nowadays the absolute best pizzas are from Mall Pizza, Boardwalk Pizza, and Sal's Ristaurante.
I've been around 4.0's my whole adult life. He's got it licked. They always start on the 4th rotation of the starter. If they don't, there's an issue. Pretty badass he could demonstrate that on camera.
I think that 174 hp at 2900 rpm seems right to me. When you do the math backwards, HP = (TQ * RPM)/5252 -> TQ = (HP * 5252)/RPM -> TQ = (174 * 5252) / 2900 = 315 ft lbs. Sounds about right amount of torque for a 6 liter at 2900 rpm? Also that Rambler is badass!
Also , industrial engines are sometimes run 24/7 non stop and are well maintained in a closed environment , you could see the valvetrain looked new , that has to be the deal of the century...
Even the weakest LS cam doesn't make peak torque til 4000 and will still make 400bhp in a 6.0L. I think it's limited for the Aisin gearbox used in the NPR truck (LS1 oil pans = Isuzu NPR box truck).
Had a little bit of the same situation in the early '80s, I bought two 413 wedge motors from a local industrial college in Cincinnati casting numbers were ground off. They were donated to the school. They were getting rid of them. Got them for 200 bucks a piece. One of them went into a '69 cuda with fender well headers. I cannot remember who I sold the other one to. Love the channel brother. Keep it up!
It's all about duty cycle. Industrial engines are rated at 100% duty cycle. 175hp sounds about right for that engine to make that hp number at 100% of the time.
TONY! Change the oil pump on those LS engines! Isuzu box trucks had a recall for low oil pressure that would eventually destroy the motor. Not saying that these would have that problem but it might be likely. But at least research the recall.
As delighted as I was to see a new video on the C5 Vette on a Tuesday, major bummer that the engine is toast. You gents are never deterred from pushing on, and that is what I like best about your channel. There is ALWAYS a way, just have to figure out the best viable solution.
Lovin the R/W/B Hornet parked outside of that garage where you got the motor. AMC forever! 258/4.0 hybrid I-6s are awesome motors. Know some guys no making 1K+hp on 4.0Ls. The AMC I-6 is one hell of a motor to work from. Not even getting into the mysterious spin them past the break point to fast for the crank to break and you can spin the to crazy RPM (from AMC back in the day doing just that while trying to build race motors).
The only real issue with almost any i-6 is the torsional twist of the crank, which is fixed with a good balancer. Add in head/cam flow and any i-6 is a winner.
Tony, I built a 4.6l stroker for my '96 2dr 2wd 5-sp jeep cherokee back in 2007. I used to autocross the heck out of it. That combo could be a fun Stay Tuned build.
Yes, a big surprise there, Tony. Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu tested the 6.0 before putting it in the Corvette & Camaro. They wanted to see the durability of the motor in the 1/2 & 3/4 ton Van's, there out. Just have to know what to look for? All it was is a detuned Corvette 6.0 liter motor in an industrial van. Richard Holdener says that there is a 2* latency on the MSD controllers, so the table will read 32* but in actuality you're getting 30*. Also, basically every LS engine makes best power at approximately 29*, so the original tune was pretty dang close to ideal.
A typical LS wants about 21-26 degrees depending on the bore & airflow. My buddy blew up his turbo 6.2 doing a burnout on a default Holley tune. It had only 3 rows for boost but ALL THE TIMING lol. I usually start with something close to stock, 18-20deg at idle, 5-15deg a 2k WOT (big cam = less air = more timing) up to 24deg at redline. I'm not sure how fancy the table adjustments are on your controller.
It's more of a surprise when you guys don't blow up a car. Too much rushing, not enough time spent figuring shit out. Still love ya guys. One Philly boy to another.

There’s tons of GM motors in things we’d least expect , detuned and set up as you mentioned “ industrial “ style. Just like they did back in the day . Tall deck 427’s in busses and large trucks. And all kinds of random engines and odd ball combos 🤙😎. You may have let the “ cat outta the bag “ with the Isuzu link. Most people don’t even know about GM’s Isuzu lineup lol. Just like they didn’t know about Holden in Aussy land . And the ones in Europe that I’m gonna leave out of this comment to spark some curiosity and people wandering through the history books 😝
It's nice to have sponsors. Expensive coils with no performance benefit. Pretty yellow, though. I have a 60k mile LS1 near West Chester with great leakdown numbers that will not overwhelm your front springs for sale if you're interested in doing it right.
Spun rod bearings. I did this to my Son's first lowrider. 4.3L V6 in a 98 C1500. Sent the temp to the moon and smoked it. We built the new 4.3 in our living room (it was 108 degrees outside in the Houston summer) to get him back on the road.
Those box truck motors are kick ass. It’s just the ECU and trans that make them economical for transport vehicles. That price is an absolute steal. You’ll get 280 hp worst case but it’ll make good power with heads and cam.

a built carbureted LS will want more than 29 degrees of timing, that's normal. Mine makes the most power at 36, that's a pretty typical number.

Fleet building? They usually keep parts on hand for quick changes. This looks like fresh engines!!!! 821 have hollow stem intake valves.
