Adorama I purchased 2 Flashpoint 360's at your store, and I love them. Looking into getting the Rovelight 600 as my new key light.. With existing the triggering system, will they work well together? Thank you.
Gavin Hoey and Mark Wallace:most of the things I´ve lernt in photography came from these guys, and for free! of course one should not stop here, but it is definitely a nice start. thank you guys!
Gavin, I love to watch your videos over again after each photo session where I try your techniques. There's nothing like actual practice with cameras and lights to truly understand why you do what you do. I love the different type of shoots in your videos. Please keep them coming! Hello from Northern California. -Kat
Guy does such a detailed and educational video and I see 102 dislikes!! Seriously ?? Is jealousy so contagious ?? Are people so unhappy with themselves? Sad.

Gavin, I told you many times.. I m maybe boring .. you are a genius.. Every video is a lesson, it's incredible the amount of things which can be done with photoshop. But photoshop is useless without (your) talent. Thanks again
The best video from Gavin clearly explains about how to balance flash with ambient light with excellent examples.I watched it couple of times and paused it when showing the photos... Hats off to u Gavin.. Waiting for this kind of tutorials in the future. Thanks a lot...
This video was great. I went through school not fully understanding how to use a light meter, but after watching this video something clicked and I now understand at least some aspects of it. Great job. Thank you for making this video!!!!
She really stands out from the background. I note earlier in the video, you were using 1/30 with the 70 - 200mm. Just wondering how you avoided camera shake on the ambient light part of the exposure?
Yoo Gavin ... bro my passion is bubbling up again ... needless to say i have dabbled in the art that is photography ... man so much has changed ... sooo much more access to to information ... bro it's on ... renaissance man in full effect ... life is good ...
I am a total rookie, but my God if this guy isn't on point! The way you explain how to set your exposure makes so much sense! Thank you for these videos!
Just downloaded the brushes and tested one... GREAT results! Also, I work on PS CC in a Mac, I downloaded and just double clicked on the file it automatically open PS with installed brushes. Thanks Gavin for sharing such valuable tools.
Thank you so much for having accurate Closed Captions!!!! I teach photography at a school for the deaf and so often we are frustrated with the captions on photo tutorials. This one is fantastic! Thank you! I'm not sure how to hash tag something. I've seen a video asking producers to add the hash tag #withcaptions . If you know how to do that, go for it and it will spread to many deaf photographers.
You are a likeable and friendly, knowledgeable presenter and photographer, Gavin. Hope to see more from you. Highly recommended. I learned some great stuff in this short video. Thanks AdoramaTV!
Dude this was the best video that explains the exposure process using strobes. Showing the two methods using shutter priority or apeture priority was gold. Thank you for taking the time to make this
Question. On the remote at 4:11 you are hitting the Plus button 6 times but I thought you wanted to turn down the light from 5.6 to 2.8??? Did I miss something? Shouldn't you have hit the minus button?
I guess you have very steady hands. Isn't the risk of getting camera motion blur increased when you shoot at 90 mm at 1/30th seconds? Or does the flash just freezes her face and it doesn't really matter that much?
It was at the limit! The flash will freeze motion but the long exposure will show slight blurring it if the subject moves. That's why Fern was resting against a tree or I was shooting wide angle ;-)
Yes flash does help freeze motion to a certain extent. However he used a 24-105 and 70-200 and they both have IS (image stabilization), so that helped too. He could very well have a good hand holding technique which can also help.
that lens has image stabilisation and you can take decent handhelds very slow if you are used to holding a big lens securely. i've done 1/10 shots no flash with the 70-200
I’m confused. When you were out where it was bright and wanted the background a little darker, you chose to increase the aperture to f4.0 vs 2.8, but when you wanted the background darker back in the woods (using the 24-105mm) you adjusted the shutter speed. Can you help explain this better, please? When do you adjuster the shutter and under what circumstances do you only adjust the aperture?
appreature for the deepth of field iso for the sensitivity of light shutter speed for the time of exposure the 3 handel the light but everyone has its own properties. he wanted to have a shallow depth of field but he wanted on the same time to reduce the light, so he goes to the shutter speed, he could also reduce or increase the ISO
I hope I can articulate this in a way that's easy to understand :) You can control the ambient light (non flash) by adjusting aperture, shutter speed or ISO. For this example, we will always try and leave ISO at 100 as this gives best results on most cameras. So that leaves Aperture and Shutter Speed as you options for controlling ambient light, you can use either or both to get the exposure you desire. You do need to consider that adjusting aperture will affect the brightness of the flash also. So depending on the power output of the flash, you may not have much flexibility there. Likewise, you may have run out of room for adjustability with shutter speed as well. Either too slow means camera shake or too fast may exceed the sync speed you have at your disposal. In this case, when it was bright, he was already at 1/160 of a second which as he said was close to the max shutter speed he could use with flash on this camera. So rather than increase the shutter speed, and end up with a half exposed frame, he was forced to adjust the aperture instead, to adjust ambient exposure. He would have just had to increase the output of the flash by 1 stop (2.8 to 4.0) to make up for that change. Hope that helps anyone who is puzzled. This topic is pretty confusing until you get some flashes yourself, put them in manual mode and experiment with the settings to see what changes have certain effects on exposure.
Hey Chris, as you know apeture, and shutter both affect how much light comes into the camera. Flash is mostly unaffected by shutter speed due to technical reasons, so youd increase it to decrease ambient light. If you increase apeture, you are both affecting the exposure of the flash and the background. I know this was 3 years ago, but if anybody else has the same question this should help them out. cx
thats why you buy an a7rii or iii ;'). but jokes aside at 400 iso you arent losing nearly any quality, only up to about 6000+ ISO is where you'll notice the grain
Greetings mr Hoey. All of your you tube tutorial videos are far the best and very informative. I just wanna say thank you for the effort of sharing your knowledge to a novice like me. You're the best!!! Cheers!!!
Thanks for posting this video Gavin Hoey I actually own the Sekonic L-308s Flashmate, but never understood how to get the best out of it with a off-camera flash. This video came just on-time as I have an engagement session and a boudoir session in the next 2-3 weeks.
Gavin, as always, a great tutorial. Straight to the point, comprehensive, really, really nice. With just a bit of british humor... and completely free of charge :). Please keep on going with your work. Greetings from Germany, Peter
Adorama is amazing thank you guys!!... but his message is more just directed to Mr Gavin Hoey........... Hi Mate!!.. Im currently studying photography full time in Australia and I watch a lot of videos on youtube to soak up any useful knowledge that will help me improve and evolve into a professional photographer in the future..... I just needed to say thank you so much for all your videos, I feel they have been some of the most beneficial to me compared to the many others I've watched, you have some really helpful advice and a great knowledge of what you teach..... There are of course a lot of talented professional photographers sharing a lot of great info here on youtube but I think its the way you deliver your tutorials that make them stand out and more useful, very easy to understand and follow.... also, like in this video I love that you jump from the shoot straight into some post processing on the same video... very helpful to get a thorough understanding of the whole process!........ anyways thats enough praising for one day!!! hahaha Thanks again mate, greatly appreciate it!
E Lowrey Nice!!! Yeah depending on how much the A7 mark ii is I might sell my a7. Because the mark ii has built in IS and more features including faster af. I do need to get me a 70-200 though haha
Buy Sigma or Tamron instead, they are affordable and good quality. I would consider purchasing A mount version with LEA-4 adapter instead of investing in E lenses.
Fantastic!! Thanks for explaining this valuable tip I'm ready to throw my work to a new level. I have a wedding shoot for my niece in a month. Time to practice.
Very nice, one of the best videos if not the best I have seen on the subject. Simple straight forward and clear. The Photo Shop segment was icing on the cake. Your lighting equipment and the location are to die for, lol Thanks Lp
amazing Gavin Hoey.. once again. thank you so much for showing those complicated looked equations and use of pro lighting equipments in such a simple way. I get one more photo lesson for you. And in there end of the video, post processing was icing on cake
Awesome video! Learnt so much from this one! And you’re straight to the point without a lot of waffling. So many tutorials have soooo much waffle and not enough walking through it. Thanks Gavin! And I’ll definitely use the free light brushes!
Thanks for your time and tips. I have been doing photography for a while, I always wish tips would be categorized as beginner, intermediate and advance. If an advance photographer watches a combination of tips, s/he might get bored as they know most of it. The beginner would not get all of it either, since they are not good enough yet to catch them all, they might need more explanation and get more out of it. Hope it helps. Looking forward for your next videos.
Great video ! You are so knowledgeable with photography it’s amazing. The steps that you preformed to get to that final product were awesome with the light at her feet to the rays of light through the trees, just fantastic !
Dear Gavin , long 'm from Mexico City , with much attention your tutorials are excellent . I do not speak or understand the English language very well and for that reason I lose a large percentage of the information . I suggest that translate into Spanish , because like I should be a lot of people who love photography that are in the same condition I with respect to language. In this way you would have more subscribers to your blog. I congratulate you for your work which I find very apacionado and precise in your explanations . Thank you.

Finally!! A video that makes sense, is challenging, straight forward and isn't lofty.
Guy does such a detailed and educational video and I see 102 dislikes!! Seriously ?? Is jealousy so contagious ?? Are people so unhappy with themselves? Sad.

Martti Suomivuori ....I guess eh? It's the accent that makes people who have travelled only as far as a tank or two of gas their whole life fear. Of course the heavy majority of these are American. +goonerdotcom I'm american and I love his vids. My wife has a British accent. Lived there for nine years.
What kind of idiot clicks on this video expecting to be "amazed" by it?
Still doesn't explain any ridiculous dislikes.
Let's see your "pro" videos Tony, guarantee you couldn't carry this guy's camera cases.
Gavin, I told you many times.. I m maybe boring .. you are a genius.. Every video is a lesson, it's incredible the amount of things which can be done with photoshop. But photoshop is useless without (your) talent. Thanks again

How in the hell has this great tutorial got 8 dislikes? What's not to like? This guy is always clear and interesting. Thumbs up from me anyway.
Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing your process. You are a very good teacher.

Excellent as always. I didn't know you could just drag brushes to the photoshop menu and it will install. Interesting.
It works the same with Actions (on the Actions panel) too ;-)
I know right! I can’t wait to show my sister that! We both use PS a lot. What a time saver!
I never seen such a good and simple man like you.

Dear Santa, I need a Red Fern, Ummmmmm, I mean a Fern with a Red Hood.
Adorama don't forget to put a rove light in my stocking!
Dude this was the best video that explains the exposure process using strobes. Showing the two methods using shutter priority or apeture priority was gold. Thank you for taking the time to make this
Gavin - always enjoy your tutorials - any chance of one going a bit deeper into the use of the light meter with flash - thx
Not a bad idea, I'll add it to the list :-)
Gavin Hoey I think Mark Wallace has already done some tutorial on light meter, but would love to see your way of using the light meter :)

1/30 of a second and handheld with a 70-200?? that seems very slow. why not bump iso a tad to get faster shutter speed and reduce camera shake?
mattttyler IS let's you do that
when you bump up iso above base you lose image quality.

I so badly want a 70-200 for my Sony a7, its just too much money.
I managed to get the sigma version on eBay for £270! Bargain of the century :) my Sony a7 looks like a bloody lens cap on it though !
E Lowrey
Nice!!! The IS one?
it was an older version to be fair, but it does the job!
