i've seen all videos of this big professional Gavin Hoey and i got courage to try some new exercise; i'm 66, retired airforce officer, just diving into this amazing world of photography!
Gavin, I love all of your videos. But this one - I love to watch again and again since 4 yrs. Honestly, I watch all of your videos, again and again, this one probably most often.
Little bit worried by how satisfying I find watching people shoot and edit. 'Ohhh yeeah, lower angle, beautiful, Mmm bring down those highlights, just a little more. Yeah that's it.'
Gavin, I watch a lot of photography videos and while many people share a lot of good information on lighting techniques and tricks I must say that the final photographs you include on your videos are consistently the best around. (Maybe other people just say, "Oh, well, it's just an example photo for my video." and do not put in the post-processing work that you do. But whatever it is, your final photographs are always inspiring and provide marks for viewers to shoot for.... no pun intended.) Thanks, as always, to you and Adorama for producing these videos.
"One of the advantages to working with ambient is I don't have to move my lights around.." Thank you Adorama for these searing insights into the mysteries of lighting.
Gavin Hoey is always amazing. That's not a pilot. That guy looks like a super hero! At 7 seconds in the pilot makes Gavin look 5 feet tall. Never the less, Gavin is still the best adorama has to offer.
Nice. Love this tutorial. I learned the difference to use ambient light and flash. And more. Now I know the situations to use each kind of light. The ambient light refer to real situations, the flash light refer to fantasy, unreal situations. The flash light brought me an surrealism aesthetic. Something like a steampunk photo.
Hey Adorama, thanks for the helpful photography tips. All of your teachers are helpful, but for me, I'm always delighted to see Gavin's videos. Great attitude, clear, concise information and always introducing me to a new project I want to attempt. Kudos, and please keep them coming.
Always a pleasure to see your videos Gavin! For me, aesthetically speaking: ambient light looks always more natural than those fake lights... Obviously!
Just a quick one where can you get tools for repairing canon lenses in uk. They have got damp on the inside. Good foto shoot at gatwick never realised ther was a mueseum there to i remember bucaneers in the service paid of from hms bullwark 1981 the original one, not current one. Great aircraft.
Thank you Gavin. Love your work. Also thanks for the links to the gear. I was just looking for a light stand that will automatically stand when put down.
Great video..well explained as usual. I do have one question regarding the light stand that you used. I see that the legs folded up as you lifted it. This is something I have been looking for to help with mobility in sometimes confined floor spaces. Could you tell me what make it is and if possible where I can get my hands on one. Thanks
Great video,Gavin. Love your short but informative style. However, I had to watch this video 17 times to get the gist, I was so distracted by Roger. OMG!! Can we have more Roger videos? Pretty please? :) Cheers
I thought he was a boxer as well ;) Very nice comparison of ambient vs. flash. It seems like you can get great photos either way, but each has a different look and feel about them. The ambient look more like what you might find for a simple photojournalism style piece for the newspaper, whereas the flash look has more of an in-depth photo essay feel, like what you might find in a magazine.
on an overcast day, i almost always prefer flash over ambient - the lighting without flash is too flat and muted otherwise...of course, that might be fine if that's the mood you're going for :)
Gavin, your tutorials are great. I've been utilizing many of your tips to my work and leaving many clients smiling...other than in their photos. :-) Thanks!
Gavin, this is SOOOO awesome! You have inspired me SOO much!! There is a photo group that I belong to and we are having a photo shoot at the Oakland (California) Aviation Museum this coming Sunday and this video as well as the other with the female (red head, I think? ) model an air museum that you did a video on was my TRUE inspiration to do some dramatic shots (if possible) while there. Ambient light and shots can be "nice", but, I want DRAMATIC and I want that "WOW!" factor, so, HSS and practice and props, etc. are what I'm shooting for. Thanks again for all that you do! The best to you, Huie
+Gavin Hoey You are a great teacher. Thanks. I have always hated flash, but I am learning now that the cameras I always used were the issue. I now am borrowing a t5i and no clue what I'm doing. Learning how to film and photograph is very confusing. lol
I realy enjoy ur videos and this one is no exception, I learnt alot from your home studio essenstial videos series. i have a request can u plz or sm1 at adorama make tutorial about 360° panorama virtual tour videos ? Thank You Sir and thanks Adorama :)
Hi Gavin, thanks again for another great tip! The post processing part is really helpful in showing us how to get the effect as seen in the image. I have a question. Will a single Canon 600EX-RT speed light + your Glow ParaPop 38" Portable Softbox good enough? I know a speeedlight has limited power source, hence I'm thinking of getting the RoveLight or Jibei HD that has 600 Ws but the weight is discouraging me. :)
The Streaklight 360 was mostly used at 1/2 power which is roughly the equivalent for THREE speedlights all firing at full power. The rovelight is OK but take a look at the newer (and better in my book) Xplor600 www.adorama.com/fplfx600tbc.html
it is a pity that Gavin now only does shooting in studio with models. Back in the days he used to show us so many technique and creative shoots you can make at home
I like Gavin's presentations, no big ego just tons of enthusiasm and expertise.
totally agree - got to know him today and I'm addicted ! Lovely personally as well :)
i've seen all videos of this big professional Gavin Hoey and i got courage to try some new exercise; i'm 66, retired airforce officer, just diving into this amazing world of photography!
Gavin is my favorite TH-cam photog. He's got a great personality and conveys complex skills in a very simple and usable manner
I really love how you explain lighting in a way that even a beginner can follow and immediately put to use.
Why I subscribed to this channel is because after the photoshoot they also share how they edit the photos as well so thank you Adorama
I like Garvin style. This is a true one light shoot. No strobes, 1 speedlight and a reflector, great work
I like Gavin Hoey. He has a great personality & always gives informative tutorials.
Yeah that's it.'
hehe
OMG, I thought I was the only one. Glad to know I'm not.
Yes, it could offend your sensibilities. Then perhaps you should consider of tens of thousands of other videos--teehee.
These are nice photos--isn't that the point?
Should we let you alone with the video for a while ;) ?

Gavin Hoey is a genius with what he does. I learn a lot every time I watch a video of his.

Love this guy Gavin Hoey..! very easy to understand and great tutorials..!

I love this video! It's one of my favorites and I refer to it when I need to remember tips for flash photography.
God damn this pilot looks badass!
Great gob. You always find a way to perfect the composition which is something I struggle with.
You are my favourite master of photographers

I thought you were going to throw the light meter away! just like Mark did!! . you should totally do it!! excellent video by the way!
Was very tempted.. next time ;)
Always, fun and inspiring. Thank you, Sir.
great! your workflows explaining problem-solving
Great instructor and tutorial. Thanks....... And model!
Thabks for this. All the images shows initially were straight out of the camera?
Fantastic and helpful in every way - THANKS!
Thank you Gavin. Love your work. Also thanks for the links to the gear. I was just looking for a light stand that will automatically stand when put down.
The Flashpoint Autostand really is a handy gadget :)
One of the best videos in a long line of great videos, thanks again!
Great video..well explained as usual.
I do have one question regarding the light stand that you used. I see that the legs folded up as you lifted it. This is something I have been looking for to help with mobility in sometimes confined floor spaces. Could you tell me what make it is and if possible where I can get my hands on one.
Thanks
Great tutorial, Gavin! Very clearly explained. I like that it is possible to create HSS looks without using HSS.
Great pictures with the flash 👍🏼👍🏼
One of the best tutorials. Learned a lot, and it is great watching the process and set ups with the results. Love the end result. Subscribed.
Great video with many priceless tips. I love that final photo. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you amazing! I have a question. Do you use also av mode for flash? Thank you!
Great video,Gavin. Love your short but informative style. However, I had to watch this video 17 times to get the gist, I was so distracted by Roger. OMG!! Can we have more Roger videos? Pretty please? :) Cheers

Thanks Christopher, that's a perfect summery... If only I'd thought of saying something like that whilst filming ;)
on an overcast day, i almost always prefer flash over ambient - the lighting without flash is too flat and muted otherwise...of course, that might be fine if that's the mood you're going for :)
Excellent tutorial, loved the flash shots. Gavin is definately my favourite Adorama presenter 😃
That guy looks seriously tough but a nice person at the same time....great shots!
I'm loving the flash look lately where the ambient light is overpowered. It's so 'Movie Poster-ish'!
Could I do this with my Elincnrom D-Lite 2 set?
Another really great tutorial. Thanks Gavin
Excellent video Gavin. I like the videos that are on location somewhere the best. Great job and great images! Thank you..
Gavin ..... you are my hero !!!!
Gavin, your tutorials are great. I've been utilizing many of your tips to my work and leaving many clients smiling...other than in their photos. :-) Thanks!
I love the 7:59 shot 👍great composition
An awesome lighting tutorial. You're a master at this Gavin! Keep'em coming!!
That overcast day is perfect for natural light shooting.
Incredibly helpful - thank you
Another great, informative video Gavin. Love watching yours more than the others. Looks like you have so much fun
Gavin, this is SOOOO awesome! You have inspired me SOO much!! The flash makes it look so awesome
Hi Gavin, can you please do a video with on-camera flash/speedlite with ambient light balance. Thanks
Simple and great, awesome as always!
Gavin I love you, you itty witty man, you're energy and clarity you are great, been binging on your videos since i found them, great stuff, keep at it
Another great vid Gav, inspirational stuff indeed. Wow, they've "Poshed-up" the museum! Well worth another visit soon.
still relevant. informative. i would welcome improving my flash + ambient light skills. thank you for the effort and the sharing.
what about the sync speed of your flash? I noticed it was 360th. I guess that would be one of the fixed parameters because of the sync speed?
How did you determine the ambient light was f/11 without a light meter? Did you already know what iso and shutter speed you wanted to use?
I have to say the flash pictures are WAY better. He looks like an action movie star in them!
Will an Expodisc work instead of aLight meter to measure light
What a great video.. I have learned few tricks
00:22 LOL the model's face!
Anyway, nice job here. Very helpful and fun to watch as always!!
Great video Gavin and great images
I know Im a flash lover now! Thank you :)
Another outstanding and informative video. For a second I thought is was at RAF Cosford. Your welcome up here any time though Gavin. :D
Nice Gavin as always.
Great video, Gavin!!!
great vid - great location...
Is Roger's surname Overandout? Could cause confusion on RT ;-)
Amazing photos!
Woa he looks bad ass :)) but kinda feels like he is a warm person inside :). Again awesome tips ! Thank you so much
In reality Roger is one of the nicest people you could ever meet but he also REALLY knows how to do the bad ass look :)
+Gavin Hoey You are a great teacher. Thanks. I have always hated flash, but I am learning now that the cameras I always used were the issue. I now am borrowing a t5i and no clue what I'm doing. Learning how to film and photograph is very confusing. lol
